How do I proceed?
by osideterry- 3 replies

I'm pretty sure one of the reasons my palms did so poorly was that they were underwatered. I was following common wisdom to only water maybe once a week during the winter, since most of my palms hate "cold, wet feet." I'm inclined to start watering twice a week, hoping it will help my palms recover. Good move? I Have no idea. The forecast is lows in the mid 30s and highs in the mid 60s as far as the eye can see. Being locked in a rainless Santa Ana scenario until Spring is very likely. I'm resetting the sprinklers today, and would love some advice. Should I wait until March to trim off the dead fronds?

All, The forecast low for last night was 30 degrees F. My location got all the way down to 49 degrees with a strong breeze! A miss of a few degrees is OK, but 19?! I could do that job! Hopefully, the wind will decrease and temps remain stable. Hooray!

Life After The FREEZE

I had an hour to kill while in downtown Los Angeles. So with camera in hand, I looked over plant life post-freeze. It should be noted that NWS did not actually report freezing temperatures in most of the LA Basin but there was noticable damage here & there. It also was noticable that park & street palms seemed to be the most unhealthy versus business/private gardens. Kings in Pershing SQ

Cold must be over

I guess HD thinks the cold is over. I walked into HD to check out the nursery today and noticed they have a whole bunch of palms out including BIG (20') foxtails and queens, and a bunch of big bizzies. 2 days after the ice storm. I guess they aren't worried about any more cold or ice.

I just copied what was important "8-14 DAY OUTLOOK FOR JAN 27 - FEB 02, 2007: THE COLD PATTERN FOR THE SOUTH AND EAST WILL LIKELY CONTINUE INTO WEEK 2. IF THE FORECASTED HEIGHT PATTERN VERIFIES... THEN RECORD SETTING COLD IS POSSIBLE ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST INCLUDING FLORIDA."

Why I got hammered

I'm not going to post photos of my sick collection of toasted palms. Plenty like them on this site. What's been bugging me is how I got hit so much harder than other yards in my own neighborhood. I decided to hit the topos, and then made this lil' show-and-tell map. The San Luis Rey River is at 90ft above sea level at it's closest point to my house. I filled in all land below 100ft above seal level in blue. My yard is the red dot near the center of the map. Imagine a river of cold air coming out of that narrow channel to the northeast, and then spreading west and south. After winter lows of 28F, 28F and now 26F, I'm conceding to Zone 9B. (By the way, my map is…

The saddest part about all of this cold is the fact that it's STILL not over...it froze here in San Marcos last night (ice all over the tops of the cars and frost on all the roofs and lawns in my area, due to the fact that we actually had some moisture overhead available to freeze), it's going to freeze AGAIN tonight and probably tomorrow night as well.... Ice on top of the coldframes and frost all over at the Dad place in Vista this morning, taking a toll on palms and other plants that had shown little or no damage at all over the last six nights. At this point...i'll be surprised if I have anything over there left alive in 10 more days or so...

On January 19th, 1977, snow fell in South Florida for the first time in recorded history. Residents and visitors were both surprised and thrilled at the rare phenomena, and local newspapers ran headlines which were nearly as big as it would be for major National or world events. Snow was seen across all of Southeast Florida as far south as Homestead and even on Miami Beach. Reports of snow were also received at Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on the other side of the Gulf Stream from Southeast Florida. Although snow in Florida is not as rare as it is believed to be, the farthest south snow had been previously observed was along a Fort Myers to Fort Pierce line in Februa…

How did the nurseries fare?
by doubravsky- 12 replies

It hit me watching the news talk about tripling of prices for citrus. How did the palm nurseries down San Diego County fare through all of this... both home based and more official types? I know Dave and Steve are talking significant losses.. (sorry guys... feel your pain). Will the prices of palms be significantly affected? I'm now thinking replacement may take a lot of looking and more scratch than the initial purchase... any thoughts>?

From the Florida Daily Weather Discussion Page "Historically Florida has been very prone to hurricane strikes. Due to very unwise coastal over development, the Tampa Bay area megalopolis of 3+ million people will eventually become victim of the worst hurricane disaster in the history of the U.S., with dreadful loss of life of up to 20,000 due to drowning and up to $100 billion in property damage. In 2004 Hurricane Charlie almost became the storm for Tampa Bay." I thought I was gloomy.

Hi, Oke i know this storm is nothing by the status Hurricane. But tomorrow (thursday 18-01-07) a very nasty day. We get another storm, this will be the tirth one in three weeks! The expect windspeed above land, normally the don't be so strong, but this one it will be wind speeds to 120 km/hour = 75mph, but more to the coast the expect windspeeds to 140 km/hour = 87mph ... I woke up this morning to a quarter inch of ice on my car, roof, and of course on the palms. It's over now. It never dropped below 30F, it just hovered around 30-32 for 2 days. 2 degrees higher and it would have been all rain. I spent 15 to 20 minutes banging ice off the cars, and knocking ice off palms. House and car looking like an ice cube Washys looking sad queen looking sad

Canopy is key
by tropicalb- 4 replies
- 1.1k views
well...it seems Dr. Darian was right. Start with a big canopy. After going through all the threads concerning the damage done during this freezing weather, one fact rings true: Palms located underneath canopy for the most part escaped major damage, while those left out in the open were decimated. (I can already hear the "duh's!!!, but how many people actually heed what they already know to be true and plant the canopy trees first?) Had I known that the 80+ year old Pepper tree at my Dad's house with it's thin leaves would have provided SO much protection over the last few nights, I would have drug all the plants over to that area a LOT sooner. I really didn't …

Freeze Durations
by ZoneTenNut- 10 replies

Scanning through all the SoCal freeze threads, I'm just blown away by the number of hours below freezing many are experiencing and how this will affect their palms. What are your experiences and how cold for how long? What kind of damage did you receive from it and what made it and what didn't? What did you do to protect your stuff, if anything? What microclimates helped (ie. southern side of house)? Windbarriers? Here in West Palm Beach, Florida, we hit upper 20's in the 89 arctic blast, but temps quickly rebounded, so the duration wasn't long. As such, many things got burned, but survived. Curious to know what others experiences have been, on a prolonged cold sna…
