Holy Moly! Todays high was 64 degrees! It felt like april. March is usually or snowiest month, but it's unlikely that we will see temps dip below 5 degrees again this winter. Here are just a few shots taken from the backyard. The sun is out for the first time in weeks! Photo taken from back patio. The snow is finally melting from my backyard. Here in colorado winter is far from over, but things are finally starting to warm up!

Palms etc. on my route to work
by PalmatierMeg- 27 replies

Hello fellow palm lovers, I work on Little Pine Island, a Florida wildlife preserve my company is restoring to its native state. After 11 years of driving, I'd stopped thinking about my drive, which is not ordinary commute. On my way, I pass through the village of Matlacha (MAT-la-shay), population ~750 out of season. Matlacha is located mostly on its own island, connected to the mainland by a drawbridge across Matlacha Pass. It is a quirky, funky fishing village trying to remake itself as the art mecca of SW FL (what palm lover wouldn't covet a coconut postcard?). It is also loaded with palms and has more Jamaican tall coconuts in one place than I've seen (maybe LY do…

Hi, At this moment a little storm depression is coming over us... at this moment windspeeds are between 31-46 Mph or 50-75 km/h.... In the northwest they have got already windspeeds around the 55 Mph or 88 km/h. At this moment and the beginning of the evening, the little storm depression get his highest point, and also rain is coming then.... Maybe the windspeeds are rising to 130 km/h or 81 Mph... If this depression is away it bring us colder air for the weekend... frost warning for saturday and sunday night.. but not for sure... this depresiion gives snow in Ireland! Palms are shaking and i don't have got the strongest winds...

Heavy rains hit many parts of Hawaii
by Al in Kona- 30 replies

How are the rest of you Hawai`i guys doing from the heavy rains (thunderstorms) hitting our islands? How much have you recorded? For us in Kona the day started out very nice, then mid day I began to hear thunder rumbling and dark clouds appearing mauka (upslope). Thunder increased and by late afternoon we were having a deluge at times. Probably the heaviest rain I've seen here falling in such a short period of time. I recorded 83.5mm (2.5 inches) so far. The forecast says we can expect continued heavy showers at times thru tomorrow. Let's see how accurate they are on this one. I hope it clears out by Friday (Feb. 1) for the HIPS annual BBQ dinner and palm auction …

by Exotic Life- 0 replies

Hi... Are there already new records this year from the weather? Here January will be take the second place from warmest january evers... January 2007 has taken place number 1. Normal average for January is 2,7C/36.8F... This january i have got already an average from 7.3C/45.2F.... with a couple day's too go. That's already more then 4C higher then normal... January 2007 has got a average of 8.1C/46.6. SO this january would be a little colder... This "new" climate give us milder winters with sometimes a couple day's with some frost.. but a lot of day's above normal tempetures. 2006 and 2007 has been a lot warmer then normal. It's just like a copy, becaus…

USDA's Temperature Zone Map
by Paul The Palm Doctor!- 24 replies
- 2.5k views
Hi to all this fine January late afterrnoon!: I am seeking obscure information from my fellow palm fanciers! :: I was wondering if anyone has ever seen (and know where I might find) a USDA Minimum Temperature Map of the Americas that has gradations including areas with Zone 12: (50-60 F.); Zone 13: (60-70 F.) and Zone 14: (70-80 F.) Or does this extension not exist. As you might know, my farm in NW Panama has never had temperatures lower than 64 F. so I guess that some map somewhere must have it colored in as Zone 13??? I would love to print out that kind of a map if there were such an animal. Any guidance would be relished! Luego, Pablito

Flooding in Queensland
by Walter John- 21 replies
- 2.3k views
Whilst we may be complaining about the cold or whatever , spare a thought for the residents and farmers of many Queensland towns and those of Northern New South Wales who have suffered major loss due to flood. How ironic, half the state of Queensland flooded the other half in drought, wow, Australia, she's tough. No wonder we like our footy, no helmets thank you. I wonder how some of our native palms went or will go with the iminent flooding of Rockhampton areas.

Tampa, St. Petersburg, FL weather archives 1 2
by surgeon83- 46 replies

Hello, I am hoping someone can guide me to a source of free weather archives specifically for the Tampa / St. Petersburg, Florida areas. I have the monthly average temperatures and record highs and lows from weather.com, but I was hoping for an archive of daily temperatures dating back to about 1948 (which I think would be the earliest for St. Pete). I have data like this for Galveston, and it is really great to have. Thanks in advance for your help. -Brian

COLD COMING TO CALIFORNIA
by happ- 33 replies
- 3.1k views
NWS-LOS ANGELES 01-18-08 1500 . . .ALL EYES TURN TO THE NORTH AS A REMARKABLY LARGE AND COLD TROUGH DROPS STRAIGHT SOUTH OUT OF WESTERN CANADA AND TAKES AIM ON CENTRAL CALIFORNIA. THE COOLING TREND BEGINS SUNDAY AS THE TROUGH BECOMES ENTRENCHED OVER THE CENTRAL PART OF THE STATE. ALTHOUGH THE MODELS SHOW SOME DIFFERENCES IN THE EXACT TRACK AND DEPTH OF THE TROUGH...THE OVERALL MESSAGE REMAINS THE SAME. NORTHERN AND CENTRAL CALIFORNIA...AND EVENTUALLY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ARE IN FOR A MAJOR PATTERN CHANGE WITH MUCH COLDER TEMPERATURES AND PERHAPS A LITTLE PRECIPITATION ON THE WAY EARLY NEXT WEEK.

COLD MORNINGS!
by gsn- 22 replies

BS in another thread made me think of this phenomenon! It seems just before sunrise is the coldest part of the night most times. I was wondering if anyone knew why the coldest part of the night was about an hour to an hour and half just before sunrise. It seems the temp can drop a few more degrees in that time frame. On the surface one would think it would get warmer as the sun begins it morning ritual of rising. What is the mechanism behind this drop in temp just before sunrise? I realize other factors might come into play ,but in general this what I have noticed since I started watching, recording temps!

High Winds In So. Cal.
by gavilan1- 25 replies

I transplanted a Dypsis decaryi that I have had containerized in a round 25G pot last year. It kept blowing over in our Santa Ana winds. Here is an image of the palm back in September 2007: I transplanted into a heavy duty plastic 31" square container, in the hopes that I could prevent the possibility of damage to this palm, which had become a beautiful specimen with about 12" of clear trunk and at least three new emerging spears at any time. Needless to say, last night the weather folks forecast severe winds for parts of So. Cal., and since I sit in a wind duct between a canyon that runs out to Riverside county along SR-91 on my NE and the ocean on my SW, we ex…

SoCal Freeze '07 Anniversary

It's in the 70s this weekend, and hard to believe one year ago today we were staring at a mess of torched palms. I'm glad to say I only had 3 casualties, and everything that survived is pretty much the way it looked before the freeze. The 10-day forecast looks pretty mild. I think we are over the hump, as record lows for February and March are nowhere near as bad as December/January.

Different cold protection ideas
by SunnyFl- 5 replies

Last week we were really afraid we might freeze here. Up went all the frostcloths/tarps/gazebo thing. It didn't freeze, and there was no damage to anything exposed in my immediate neighborhood - but the stuff under the frostcloth, anything it touched, got roughed up. Plus - it takes forever to put the stuff up and anchor it well. Needless to say, I'm not a big fan of frostcloth So - does anyone rely on anything else? Heating cables, Christmas lights, anti-transpirants (is that the word?) - what do you swear by, instead of at? I'm thinking of trying foxtails again. Swore I wouldn't after my two died. The first one died from a fungus? not sure; the secon…

Norethern Californa Hurricane?
by John Case- 3 replies

I saw a report this evening that the wind was clocked at 107 mph at the top of the North PEak of Mt. Diablo. That is about 4 miles from my home. It was really windy here last night. 2 bushes of mine, a blue hibiscus, and my African Sumac were blown right out of the ground. The hibiscus was about 7 feet tall, the sumac was 9 feet tall. Hopefully I can save the sumac, the hibiscus is a weed around here and is extremely easy to grow, and get out of control. The wind and rain here was intense. I have to clean out the Koi pond, spa, and try to convince the dogs it is a good idea to go outside. Very intense weather...and very cool, although it may be the wind chill.…
