Felda / Immokalee Florida Zone? 10a or 9b?
by coco305- 11 replies

I looked around the Felda FL area on google maps and I have seen mature cocos. I looked at the weather from LaBelle which seems to be the closest weather station https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/@4161075/historic?month=1&year=2022 Seems much hotter here than other locations. Does this seem like a location I could grow Indian Laurel, possibly Cocos, as well as a Ficus Elastica, or maybe some areca palms?

Hurricane Ian damage to Bismarck
by Venice Strong- 12 replies
- 1.2k views
Last week’s Hurricane Ian pounded Venice FL with 115+ mph winds. Our beautiful 25 foot Bismarck suffered extensive damage to the northerly facing fronds. Several southern facing fronds are still attached. Our landscaper said that the center top frond was lost (containing the white spongey core material) and has no chance of survival. Has anyone had experience with this center core loss and what are it’s chance of survival?

With Monsoon 2022 now in the books, attention across the U.S. Southwest and California now turns to what may lie ahead for the winter ahead.. After a " decent " Monsoon season here, and some other parts of the Southwest, ..and parts of Southern California, will the trend of the last couple years continue? or, could the 3rd La Nina winter throw some interesting curves into the mix? For the moment, here at least, " Fantastic Fall Hiking Season" has returned as " Sizzle Season " looks to be put to bed.. Warmth will continue for the time being, in the low deserts at least, but, 80s and 90s are better than daily 100+ (++) heat, especially now that nights are trending …

Hi, will any non-led Christmas lights work? do they have to be a certain wattage? I am looking at getting these and based on the comments other zone pushers have used them as well for winter. but I'm wondering if I should look for lights with higher wattage. these are just 7 watts. Is that sufficient: C9 Clear Christmas Lights Set - Indoor/Outdoor Christmas Light String - Christmas Tree Lights - Hanging Christmas Lights - Roofline Light String - Outdoor Patio String Lights - Green Wire - 25 Foot : Amazon.ca: Tools & Home Improvement

Starting a thread for Hurricane Ian. Getting windy, water is still soaking in for now.. Much larger and stronger than Charlie! I think we will be in the eye wall and possibly the eye. The eye was 40 miles wide at 6 am this morning. Power has gone out, but come back for now. Not expecting it to stay on for much longer. Short video out the front door, just a few minutes ago. Prepared the safe room just in case. DE901CE1-0953-4A0E-AB72-CDF447577A2A.MOV

Well, a cold front is expected to dip down through here over the next couple of days, with it comes lower humidity and low overnight temps. Even high temperatures will take a slight ding with highs only in the mid 80's in spots early next week. Lows will be in the mid to upper 60's in spots across northern Florida for a couple nights. It will be our first real taste of "fall". Im almost glad, but i know that this is a sign that ill need to break out the sheets and lights in a few months. Unfortunately, this front will not bring anything to central or south Florida besides some rain, which some of yall might not complain about. Anyways, just figured we could jumpstart the …

California heat wave breaking

California seeks energy conservation for 10th day in heat wave (msn.com) This has been a baddie. Other heat waves have been hotter, but a lot shorter. In Sept. 2020 I had about 112 F on Labor Day weekend (and a lot of people bought palms anyway!) but it was only a couple-three days. This time it's been hot since Sept. 1 with no letup yet. Supposedly that 'cane from Mexico will cool things down, but we'll see. Any one have any heat wave stories?

A rare sight out west... Hurricane Kay
by Silas_Sancona- 22 replies

With the worst of the heat looking to back off a bit across the west over the next few days, attention turns to potential impacts from a rarely experienced weather phenomenon along the west coast of the U.S. While remnants of dying storms do spread clouds and higher humidity levels, the occasional, brief tropical shower / Dry / high-based thunderstorm outbreak across the state from time to time through the summer and fall months almost each year, significant effects from Tropical systems that manage to reach near shore waters of California are extremely rare. While it has happened, direct hits from legit Tropical storms / Hurricane strength systems are noted in Cali…

Well I thought I’d start a new thread. I’m looking forward to a good growing season this year. Spring isn’t really here yet, but winter is slowly releasing its grip. By the equinox things start to really improve. Today is cloudy with rain returning tomorrow. A min of 12.5C this morning with a top of 18C forecast. The garden knows spring is upon us soon. The deciduous trees are in bud burst with the grapevines swelling there buds. My Rhopies, Howeas, and Archontophoenix are all opening spears in anticipation. Bring it on.

Tropical monsoon

Hi all! Just curious about this map I pulled from Wikipedia about tropical monsoon climates. I’m surprised (but maybe not totally surprised) to see parts of Florida shaded in on the map. I guess that explains why so many tropical palms do ok here until the big freezes 🤷♂️

Hurricane Andrew... 30 Years Since
by Palmarum- 4 replies

Hard to fathom it has been 30 years since that storm redrew the landscape in South Florida, mostly burning a deep scar across Miami-Dade altering landmarks along the way. From that point forward, the palm & plant world was permanently divided into 'pre-Andrew' and 'post-Andrew' eras. So much damage. Many collections, gardens, nurseries were never the same again, if they recovered at all. I remember the talk and discussions afterwards including 'Yes I did have a big specimen of that -- before Andrew'. I hear new stories now and then, but they are becoming more infrequent. The views traveling south along I-95 are etched into my memory, as my first trip was a few da…

Well I feel like its officially time to start the summer topic. I've had a few days just below 100F so far, and some pretty decent weather going forward. Even though we had a late start I'm seeing some good growth, and the heat lovers have really started moving. Currently sitting at 90F and the forecast is looking pretty toasty.

Are Miami's winters milder?
by Wizardmiami- 4 replies

I am located southwest of Miami International Airport and low temperatures here track a few degrees lower than the airport. I use two indicators, the lowest winter temperature and the number of nights the temperature falls below 50 (my arbitrary indicator) I use 50 as a benchmark based on the point I will see leaf burn or stress on various palms or ornamental shrubs. The two graphs reflect minimums back to 1957 as does the "cold night" chart. Some notable points- 1. Lows below 50 are less frequent (average now 9.58 nights a year- 1962-2022) 2. The last time the airport went below 32 was Christmas 1989 3. Average annual low 40.14 (1965-20…

Well it looks like we may get some bad first tonight. This morning went down to 0.1C, and the coldest looks to be yet to come. It will be a clear, still few nights, under a high pressure zone. Most of my palms are under canopy and will take it OK, but I have some that aren't that protected that may get damaged, such as two trunking Hyophorbe indica, and some Abyssinian bananas. Ive got a large industrial fan that I may hook up in the area and let it blow across the area. Has anyone done this before for their palms? I'm kind of desperate to try anything so I'm going to give it a go tomorrow morning and see what it does.

In the Southwest, we wait all year, for the best time of the year.. hating the heat that precedes it, but looking forward to the magic it can bring once the rains begin.. This is the Monsoon.. The most unique of weather patterns in the North American subtropics. ***For anyone curious, i'll defer further insight into the detailed details of exactly what the North American Monsoon is to looking through past year's threads here***. That said, in a nutshell, the word " Monsoon " ..a word of Arabic origin refers to a seasonal reversal of wind direction.. one that often brings rain and raised humidity.. While used too often by miss informed people, the word "…

Furnace Creek/ Death Valley Ca. was reporting a temperature of 116 F at 3 PM PST with a dew point of 24 F, humidity of 4% for a “Real Feel” temperature of 106 F. The high temperature was expected at 4 PM PST at 119 F but the “Real Feel” temperature likely would not exceed 106 F by much. Frostproof, Fl. was the highest “Real Feel” temperature of 117.3 F in Florida based upon a dewpoint of 79.3°F, humidity of 58% and an actual temperature of 97°F. Waldo, Ark. registered a “Real Feel” temperature of 136.8°F based upon a dewpoint of 85°F, a humidity of 58% and an actual temperature of 105°F. I didnt quite realize how popular these threads were until this year, so here we are! "Happy" Hurricane Season. We will start off with the forecast for the season, and what we currently have going on out there right now. The forecast from just about every agency or group that puts out a seasonal forecast is calling for an ABOVE AVERAGE season this year. Colorado State University put out their forecast calling for 19 named storms, 9 of those being hurricanes, and 4 being major hurricanes. NOAA has also put out their forecast, and they are calling for 14-21 named storms, 6-10 of those being hurricanes, and 3-6 of those hurricanes being major hurricanes. The a…
