Southern Brevard County, Florida (Palm Bay, Malabar, Grant, Valkaria) had several arson fires yesterday during a spell of high winds, then fewer but bigger ones today with less wind but drier air. Palm Bay is mostly a huge old subdivision where lots were sold, and actual building of houses was done individually, lot by lot. So there's a lot of empty lots full of overgrown, flammable vegetation. Same goes for the areas south of Palm Bay, except the lots are bigger and some land has been bought as green space. I think there'll be some concern about leaving the vegetation in such flammable condition, but if Florida history is any guide, nothing will be done, except t…

The Herald says he quit or was ousted. Not merely "temporarily reassigned." This possibly brings an end to calls for his ouster by some 20 of the 50 staff. What an unusual in-the-office storm for a fairly staid agency!

The polar vortex is back in the middle of Summer!!!

Who would have thought, a polar vortex in the middle of Summer. I thought we were done with that. Highs in the 50's and lows in the low 40's for the Great Lakes. The NBC headline reads: 'Polar Vortex' Flashback? Experts Say Rare Summer Cold Front on the Way.' The Washington Post calls it the "Poorman's polar Vortex": Poor man’s polar vortex to make shocking summer return in eastern U.S. next week.

Growth markers for 2008
by PalmGuyWC- 1 reply

Every year on Jan 1st I mark the palms that I want to check for frond growth for the coming year. I use the plastic ties that have an insert on one end. They are used for tieing up vines, etc. If it's a large palm I use two or three ties to make a ring. I then put it over the newest emerging sphere, usually a few inches long, and then at the end of the year it's easy to count the fronds that have grown into the ring. This way there is no gessing how fast your palm grew in a year. If I want to check how fast the emerging sphere is growing, rather than just put a mark with a waterproof felt tip pin where the sphere is emerging from a sheth, I stick a bamboo stake in the…

Cold Beginning to 2010, but Moderation in site

Well the results for the first 3 months of 2010 are here. It's been real cold. So far I've lost only 2 palms: Phoenix rupicola and Ravenea rivularis. Neither is a big loss. More may die as we get into the season of rot when heat and humidity encourage composters to attack weakend palms. Hopefully it won't be an issue! Anyway, here's the note from the National Weather Service (sorry, temps are in F). [i]... New record set for consecutive days below 80 degrees at the Jacksonville International Airport... ... Still remains the coldest start to a calendar year in Jacksonville climate history... Today... Monday March 29th... Marks 104 consecutive days wit…

Invest 99 - Brevard County

We had an interesting Sunday, October 1st. Little Invest 99L was parked NE of the Melbourne, FL area out over the Atlantic. The tropical wave never developed but it did bring me 8-10" of rain in 24 hours. The issue was compounded because several weeks Irma dropped up to 15" of rain. The rain we had yesterday really had nowhere to go as the ground is still very saturated. I think the weather terminology is, "training", a complex of storms followed the same path from east to west the entire morning/day/night. I have a coconut germination station inside my son's sandbox, when the water had rose high enough to clear the sides of the sandbox, the coconuts all floated away…

sabal pametto Sabal palmetto new growth anomaly

I have a cabbage palm, eight feet of clear trunk, approximately twenty-five years old from a natural seeding, growing immediately adjacent to the front porch of my log cabin built on block pilings in 1985. This winter and spring the tree began producing new growth abnormally. Instead of growing fronds on the usual extended petioles, all the new fronds are clustered tightly together as one sees on newly transplanted cabbage palms in full sun (my tree is in 60 percent shade under deciduous bald cypress). The only events that I can imagine that could have had any impact on the tree are (1) my roofer made some minor repairs to my porch roof and cut off the fronds that were …

Does anyone know why these recent, prolonged dips of the polar vortex tend to occur only over a large continent, but not really over oceans? Obviously, it has happened over North American a few times in recent years. It also occurred over central and eastern Europe in early 2012. I know nothing about the polar vortex phenomenon, but I have noticed that the pattern seems to be an extremely low-latitude dip in the jet stream which causes the polar vortex to "get stuck" in a particular spot for a while, but I haven't noticed this pattern occurring anywhere in recent history except over continental land masses. Is there something about oceans that prevent the jet stream f…

I was looking at weather.com and the weather doesnt look likes going to be pretty. Noaa calls for snow showers lowering down to around 1000 with lows in the mid 20's around January 11. The next days it says it will be in the mid to upper 20's. I have found weather.com to be very conservative. Weather is calling for a low of 36 in SF. weather.com also says mid 20's throughout central valley. Just a heads up folks.

Video taken Jan 9th 2018 Rain began at noon lasted till dawn. We had a break right before 5pm, took this short quick video. Temps dipped to 8C/46F right before dawn the next day. So I turned on the IR heat lamps from 4pm (9th) till 9am (10th). It's probably overkill, but I must admit, this winter (knocking on wood), has been very benevolent with us. Days in the 70-80's and nights in the 50's. This time last year, I had the coconuts completely covered. I think last years winter rainfall was a record-setting one. So far, I have set up the tarps only to deflect the cool rain from pelting directly onto the coconuts. This weekend they're calling for 80…

Red Tide Watch

For anyone locally, ( Tampa/Sarasota area) or others considering possible beach trips while in the area over the next couple weeks, be advised that a closely monitored Red Tide which has been lurking roughly 40 miles just off the coast is looking more certain to reach the beaches in coming days, esp. with the wind pattern looking to stay moving west to east. According to the latest observations, it has elongated from roughly 50-60 miles in length to 90 miles currently. It is also looking to be one of the largest blooms since 2006. Already, had noticed something "different" about the water quality along the beaches/ shorelines along the mouth of the Manatee River/ Sara…

There was a cyclone near cairns far north Australia crossing land around Thursday with it travelling inland now bringing rain down south it’s an amazing event we do get the the very rare cyclonic weather patterns now called the east coast low weather pattern bringing rain from the north also when the north of Australia has a wet season annually we often get our rain from the top end of Australia the inland southerly winds combined with tropical north wind coming into great affect and that’s when the best wet weather in summer is at its best meaning great palm growing weather in summer with a combination of heat you have pretty well much the same growing conditions as cair…

Interesting climate data for CA

Here's an interesting article regarding climatic changes in central and northern California. It's pretty common to colloquially talk about the lack of winter fog among Fresnans but it's interesting to see actual research concerning it. From a cultivation perspective, I think that the lack of heavy winter fog contributes to more sunny winter days which in turn helps marginal plants edge through winter. https://news.berkeley.edu/2019/04/10/falling-levels-of-air-pollution-drove-decline-in-californias-tule-fog/

My plant is fueling and I don’t know what to do with the new leaf, I have placed it near the heater that comes on a few hours in the night and by a window, I water once a week as well. Is that sufficient for the plant? mid the soil supposed to look whitish on top like a moss layer?

What's Up? How Cold in Cali?
by happ- 1 reply

The much touted "Cold Spell" is receiving lots of attention & opinions. At best it should be bad news for frost-prone areas like Oceanside plain/Vista/San Marcos/El Cajon. Metro areas should stay above 40F though NWS predicts 39F in San Francisco Saturday morning. Bay Area will be especially cold in areas away from the water. Wind may be the worst part of the system since the cold dry air massing in western Canada will ride a low pressure into the PacNW/RockyMts forcing/funneling tight millibars. So long as it stays windy the night temps will modify but super dry air will cause damage. It is strongly urged to irrigate heavily before this event. Hope for…

Evrotas Valley summer average highs (beats Cordoba)

Following up from a previous topic where we hypothesized than areas further inland and North of Sparta would have higher summer average maxes Well it appears that the National Observatory of Athens has been running a secondary Hydrometeorological station in the depths of the Evrotas Valley around 10 km North of Sparta the past 4 years. Below some pics of the Evrotas station and its position relative to Sparta WMO met station. And below is how Evrotas NOA station looks the past 4 years. Notice the particularly pronounced summer average highs. Especially that July 40.5C average max. Again we are talking about only 4 years of…
