This is for the West Coast, up and down from WA / SEA But this discussion is only socal. REGIONAL METEOROLOGIST DISCUSSION SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER AUTHORITY SEP 15, 2009, 12:45a TEMPERATURES WILL START TO RISE TODAY, AND EVEN MORE SO BY MID-WEEK AS THE RIDGE AXIS BUILDS OVERHEAD. THIS WILL BUILD IN OVER THE WEEK CAUSING TEMPERATURES TO BE ON THE INCREASE, TO HEATWAVE LEVELS. THE RIDGE WILL BE BUILT OVERHEAD BY THE WEEKEND, AND MID 90s AND EVEN 100s FOR SOME VALLEY LOCATIONS WILL BE POSSIBLE WITH IT. THE STRENGTH OF THE RIDGE COULD EVEN BRING HUMID CONDITIONS TO THE AREA FOR HUMID + HEAT BEING THE FACTOR BY EARLY NEXT WEEK. NEVER-THE-LESS, IT WILL B…

Higher Soil Temps With This Weather
by Jim in Los Altos- 3 replies
I periodically check my soil temperatures in various parts of my landscape and from an average low of 50F at the end of November after a cold spell, my soil temps. today ranged from 57.5F to 60F. I was noticing spears opening rapidly on a few of my Archontophonix and I even measured more than 1/4" growth on the new spear of my Roystonea in the last two days. That's definitely not typical of the end of December when most growth is at a standstill. It looks like this wet, mild weather pattern will last for several more days and possibly longer. My garden seems to like it.

WINDY WEATHER
by www.dadluvsu.com- 3 replies
Lots of wind today, my shadehouse has been blown around in its first mild bit of wind... The wood structure ripped a couple small tears in my shadecloth. Some pots that were stacked in a corner fell over and my groundcover has been blown all over the place... This is the first time I have encountered any kind of wind since I built the second shadehouse. I can imagine now how catastrophic hurricane force winds will be if they ever come across my palm operation... It will be bad ... Did anyone else have any wind damage? Here's a couple photos around the shadehouse....

Patterns of World Lightning Strikes
by amazondk- 3 replies
- 1.6k views
Since there is a lot of information on lightning in the weather these days I looked up a NASA map on global ligtning strikes around the world. It looks like that the champ is in Central Africa. I think that Brazil actually has the most lightning strikes per year as a country. But, since it is so large and it is all tropical this only makes sense. It does not mean the most lightning strikes per KM2. dk

Get your "I survived Bonnie" T shirts here! I mean,c'mon now. This is why people do not take the big storms seriously! TWC was in Miami reporting on the storm. I think I saw a few leaves move on a palm tree...perhaps I was not seeing all that wind damage? Anyone else? They are calling for an active season, but this is not the way to promote it. This looks scary, hope it's a false alarm. http://local.msn.com/neoguri-to-become-a-super-typhoon-target-japan-1 "Rapidly intensifying Typhoon Neoguri is on track to become the first super typhoon of 2014 and threaten lives and property in Japan." "Strengthening will continue through Monday as the typhoon progresses through an area of very warm water and low wind shear (strong winds above the surface that can shred tropical systems apart)." How do I proceed?
by osideterry- 3 replies

I'm pretty sure one of the reasons my palms did so poorly was that they were underwatered. I was following common wisdom to only water maybe once a week during the winter, since most of my palms hate "cold, wet feet." I'm inclined to start watering twice a week, hoping it will help my palms recover. Good move? I Have no idea. The forecast is lows in the mid 30s and highs in the mid 60s as far as the eye can see. Being locked in a rainless Santa Ana scenario until Spring is very likely. I'm resetting the sprinklers today, and would love some advice. Should I wait until March to trim off the dead fronds?

Signs of Spring
by Silas_Sancona- 3 replies

While Groundhog's day is still a few days off, and there is still a month and 20, or so days until we reach the official start of it, I though it would be fun to discuss what signs of spring you have seen or, how you know the cold and dreary days of winter are on their last legs.. Living in several different places over the years, it is interesting to have experienced how each area changes as the days grow longer and winter's grip fades away. Especially in the places I lived where Snow could still be on the ground on St Patrick's Day. Anyway, feel free to chime in with your thoughts/experiences. Back in CA it was flowers on the Acacias, Almond trees and Saucer Magnoli…

Farmers Almanac
by Scott- 3 replies
I read a news story saying that the Farmers Almanac (Debbie Downer) is forecasting a very rough winter ahead. It doesn't surprise me at all. We didn't even see leaf drop here last year until December. It's already starting. YUCK!!!!! I hate winter and all the wind and cold that it brings. My biggest concern, of course, is that we don't get the horrendous freeze that we saw a couple of years ago.
