Dec 2013 California Freeze Watch 1 2 3 4

So at to not mislead folks in Southern California, I am going to use this thread to post daily updates from the various meteorological sources on next week's forecasted Yukon Express which is now going to affect mostly Central and Northern California. This is not a 2007 repeat. Socal NWS calls for threats of hard freezes in Southern California's upper deserts and far inland valleys, but it's not likely that Southern California's coastal zones will experience anything worse than maybe a few degrees below 45F. At least that's what the current forecasts are saying. As of Saturday Morning, the GFS has the bulk of the energy aimed over inland Central California, with a rap…

Summer down under 1 2 3 4

Some photos of the garden on what's been a near perfect early Summer's day. High of around 24C (75F), and not too humid. Been quite a bit of rain in the past two weeks so everything is growing like mad. Wintered over the banana trunk and one leaf with some polyester frostcloth, which allowed it to take off again since September. This trunk has been going since November 2016 so must flower soon. R. Sapida Oceana small grade only been in ground since September 30th currently pushing out its second new frond. https://youtu.be/_i4WfjVqPDA

Southern Hemisphere growing season 23/24 1 2 3 4
by Tyrone- 150 replies

Well, it’s time for a new thread. Calendar spring is here now and it also appears that the real spring is too. Yesterday on Sep 1 we had a 24C day then some small rumblings and a thunderstorm which dropped about 5mm of rain. We are now at the point in time where the weather is gradually on the improve and the weeds are growing like mental. Hopefully a great growing season awaits and the palms flourish.

Summer Down Under 1 2 3 4

Perth's coldest summer morning on record As the sun rose over Western Australia on the first day of summer, it was feeling more like winter in Perth. The temperature at 5:25am local time was only 6.6ºC, making this the city's coldest morning of summer in 124 years of records. The previous coldest morning of the season was 7.9ºC in December 2007, while Perth's long-term average minimum temperature at this time of year is about 16ºC. In fact, this morning's temperature would even be below-average for the middle of winter in Perth. The unusually cold start to summer was caused by a high pressure ridge that moved over southwestern Austral…

Winter Weather Threat - February 2011 1 2 3 4

Hi all: I wanted to create this thread, with the correct year, as a continuation to the January thread. A few weeks ago, I had posted about the models latching-on to a possible outbreak of very cold arctic air spilling down the plains. Although the models were consistent, they were questionable as the cold air that was needed never really built-up in Canada as depicted. It's very common for the GFS to show some scary scenario 10-14 days away but the cold air needed to make it all happen is lacking. We have had the two fronts come down, and while very chilly, it's nothing record-breaking. Still - it's been below freezing at my house now for about 12 hours so this …

Spring has sprung in the south 1 2 3 4

Must be my turn to start one of these threads... I'll start by mentioning our local Brisbane weather has been pretty good the last week or 2. We had a long winter that had nice enough days but the low minimum temps were the worst they have been for many years, spring has been a long time coming but it has definitely arrived. Welcome to the Southern Hemisphere spring!! Let's all hope it a good one! Our biggest risk is a dry warm spring which IMHO is quite likely??

Autumn/Spring that time again 1 2 3 4

Well, no one was going to put this up, so i thought I should. What's happening in your neck of the woods? Here it is still summer, but as Bob Dylan said "times they are a changin' " Still hot here, but March is warmer than December anyway, so nothing unusual there. Maybe rain tomorrow morning and a mild 29C. How delightful. The moisture that comes out of the air and sky is always welcome here. Even looks like a cold front may come within 1000km of us in a few days which is nice. We haven't seen one of those since about winter 2009. Here's a report on our heat spell, which reminds me. I should put some potash on my Heliconia rostratas this arvo. Maybe the …

Freeze warning for CA 1 2 3 4

So it is interesting how just a couple days ago the models showed California being protected from the arctic air and now there is a strengthening of a high over the Atlantic, protecting the east coast. If this model holds, it is going to get bad. Probably upper 20s for some areas. Forecast lows are still 32-34 for most areas for central/northern ca but I wanted to put a warning out there just in case. I am going to start now with prep work to make sure all my stuff gets protected. Maybe it will push east or there will be some cloud cover to limit damage. Good news is January is coming soon when this crap starts pushing eastward.

From the Climate Prediction Center prognostic discussion (10-14 days out) "8-14 DAY OUTLOOK FOR JAN 23 - 29 2015 DESPITE THE AFOREMENTIONED UNCERTAINTY DURING THE 6-10 DAY PERIOD, THE WEEK-2 FORECAST IS ISSUED WITH FAIRLY HIGH CONFIDENCE. MODEL AGREEMENT REMAINS GOOD WITH RESPECT TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE RIDGE OVER FAR WESTERN NORTH AMERICA, WHICH IS FORECAST TO ALLOW MORE ARCTIC AIR TO INFLUENCE THE CONUS WITH TIME. THE 528 DM HEIGHT LINE LOCATED OVER THE GREAT LAKES IN THE MANUAL BLEND FINDS ITS ORIGIN OVER THE ARCTIC OCEAN, A SURE SIGN OF AN ANOMALOUSLY COLD PATTERN. IN FACT, THE FORECAST PATTERN BEARS MANY SIMILARITIES TO THE EXTREME COLD PERIODS TH…

Possible Florida Freeze - December 1 2 3 4

It's that time of year again, crazy how time flies. My coastal city just finished removing Hurricane Matthew debris (vegetation & fences) from my area this week and now we are talking about old man winter. This is a week out so can't take it too seriously, but it's good to be prepared. Saturday morning, December 10th looks like our first shot at much colder weather. Especially for north Florida.

December weather 1 2 3 4

Well it's December. How is it so far for you. Today we had a top of 27C, tomorrow will be 31C with evening showers, and then mid twenties with rain for another couple of days. Normally Decembers are totally dry with very rare rain for us. This summer may be a wet one, which will be nice. Palms are starting to really leap ahead now even though Nov was a full 2C cooler than usual. Best regards Tyrone

Fall/WInter weather in the PNW talk. 1 2 3 4

New season new thread. So only 3 weeks ago we were in the 80's and now barely reaching 60 the last few days or more. The return of semi-regular rain has been great, but aside from one event where I recorded an inch over 2.5 days I haven't been getting very much. Rain/drizzle seems to be coming through about once a week but I'm picking up 0.05" give or take. It appears that the rain is just that little bit further north, I know Portland proper has had much more rain than what I seem to be getting. I often see the dark clouds but they seem to skirt around me. I dug a hole for a new olive tree and after the top 1/4" the ground was dry. Most days are still sunny …

Jan 2 Cold Snap 1 2 3 4

Gonna get chilly down here, lows of 31, 27, 33 respectively. At least this is a holiday weekend, so I have plenty of time to prepare. I am bringing quite a few plants in that I would normally leave out. I will hit a few with a good burst of liquid fertilizer which might boost the salts in the leaves just a bit and yes, I know I should have done this at least a couple of days ago. I may throw an old sheet over a couple of things, but probably not bother with a light. So, what are you doing to prepare your plants for a brush with death?

This should be a month of changes North and South. October is traditionally a very warm month here in Louisiana, but we have a cold front due in tonight and a cool start to the month with a low of 61 tonight and 56 tomorrow night. After a long hot summer, I have to say it feels good.

Forecasts are trending downwards for Thur/Fri as that piece of arctic air is set to intrude upon our beautiful weather. Hard to believe there will be freeze warnings in north Tampa Bay, as today was 83F with a dewpoint of 70F, just like yesterday. Tomorrow is suppose to be the same. Hinting at a freeze for inland Pasco/NE Hillsborough possible. Up and down, up and down.
