New thermometer recommendations
by RedRabbit- 8 replies
What do you guys suggest for a new thermometer? Here’s what I’m looking for: - Accurate - Has max/min readout - Ideally, connects to Wunderground or has some other data recording. - Don’t want to pay extra for an anemometer, I don’t have a decent place to install one and the HOA would probably throw a fit. Davis are great, but they’re overkill for my purposes. My last thermometer was a simple Acurite one that connected to Wunderground. It only cost something like $60, but it did the job. Unfortunately, they stopped selling this model. I know you guys are weather experts so I’m curious what you all would recommend.

Felda / Immokalee Florida Zone? 10a or 9b?
by coco305- 11 replies

I looked around the Felda FL area on google maps and I have seen mature cocos. I looked at the weather from LaBelle which seems to be the closest weather station https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/@4161075/historic?month=1&year=2022 Seems much hotter here than other locations. Does this seem like a location I could grow Indian Laurel, possibly Cocos, as well as a Ficus Elastica, or maybe some areca palms?

Hurricane Ian 09.28.2022 1 2 3

Starting a thread for Hurricane Ian. Getting windy, water is still soaking in for now.. Much larger and stronger than Charlie! I think we will be in the eye wall and possibly the eye. The eye was 40 miles wide at 6 am this morning. Power has gone out, but come back for now. Not expecting it to stay on for much longer. Short video out the front door, just a few minutes ago. Prepared the safe room just in case. DE901CE1-0953-4A0E-AB72-CDF447577A2A.MOV

Hi, will any non-led Christmas lights work? do they have to be a certain wattage? I am looking at getting these and based on the comments other zone pushers have used them as well for winter. but I'm wondering if I should look for lights with higher wattage. these are just 7 watts. Is that sufficient: C9 Clear Christmas Lights Set - Indoor/Outdoor Christmas Light String - Christmas Tree Lights - Hanging Christmas Lights - Roofline Light String - Outdoor Patio String Lights - Green Wire - 25 Foot : Amazon.ca: Tools & Home Improvement

A rare sight out west... Hurricane Kay
by Silas_Sancona- 22 replies
With the worst of the heat looking to back off a bit across the west over the next few days, attention turns to potential impacts from a rarely experienced weather phenomenon along the west coast of the U.S. While remnants of dying storms do spread clouds and higher humidity levels, the occasional, brief tropical shower / Dry / high-based thunderstorm outbreak across the state from time to time through the summer and fall months almost each year, significant effects from Tropical systems that manage to reach near shore waters of California are extremely rare. While it has happened, direct hits from legit Tropical storms / Hurricane strength systems are noted in Cali…

Well as we transition from winter to summer, I think this probably warrants a post. Some devastating bush fires on Saturday evening in northwest England. It's like something you would expect to see in Australia or Greece during their summer. I'm now hearing that a cigarette butt may have caused this inferno below near Liverpool! An entire nature reserve lost and 800 people evacuated from their homes. How the actual hell does a 'wetland' catch on fire in March!? This is crazy... The scale of the damage on Sunday morning As if that isn't enough, another fire was absolutely raging i…

California heat wave breaking
by DoomsDave- 1 reply

California seeks energy conservation for 10th day in heat wave (msn.com) This has been a baddie. Other heat waves have been hotter, but a lot shorter. In Sept. 2020 I had about 112 F on Labor Day weekend (and a lot of people bought palms anyway!) but it was only a couple-three days. This time it's been hot since Sept. 1 with no letup yet. Supposedly that 'cane from Mexico will cool things down, but we'll see. Any one have any heat wave stories?

Tropical monsoon

Hi all! Just curious about this map I pulled from Wikipedia about tropical monsoon climates. I’m surprised (but maybe not totally surprised) to see parts of Florida shaded in on the map. I guess that explains why so many tropical palms do ok here until the big freezes 🤷♂️

Hurricane Andrew... 30 Years Since
by Palmarum- 4 replies

Hard to fathom it has been 30 years since that storm redrew the landscape in South Florida, mostly burning a deep scar across Miami-Dade altering landmarks along the way. From that point forward, the palm & plant world was permanently divided into 'pre-Andrew' and 'post-Andrew' eras. So much damage. Many collections, gardens, nurseries were never the same again, if they recovered at all. I remember the talk and discussions afterwards including 'Yes I did have a big specimen of that -- before Andrew'. I hear new stories now and then, but they are becoming more infrequent. The views traveling south along I-95 are etched into my memory, as my first trip was a few da…

I thought I’d start a new topic seeing that we technically are no longer in winter. However September down here still feels like winter but with some warm days stuck in amongst the wet cold weather. It’s actually quite a teaser really, especially after such a wet winter. I’m waiting for the place to dry out but have already started planting new things out, some R sapida, Archontophoenix and Pandanus furcatus and Ficus macrophylla. But winter is dragging its heels and I’ve lost or am losing things to root rot. I’ve got water pooling in areas that were basically bone dry in winters past. Just gotta learn from the experience I suppose.

The Season of Fire and Rain. Southwest Monsoon Season, 2020
by Silas_Sancona- 21 replies
- 1.2k views
With a new week comes the start of the most important "season" across the U.S. Southwest, the North American Monsoon ( NAM ), and the "official" start of Astronomical Summer in the Northern Hemisphere ( on Saturday ) While essentially quiet across most of the state atm, it hopefully won't be too long before our bone dry scorching heat gives way to daily or weekly rounds of rain and raised humidity. As mentioned in earlier threads here in the WX section, already been a few flirty teases across the state in regards to what may lie ahead for the season itself. At the same time, still trying to get the 4 corners High set up over the Great Basin/ Inter-mountain West, and de…

Why is the Dallas area peculiarly warm?
by Sabal_Louisiana- 1 follower

You folks living in Texas might know. Dallas/Ft Worth is about midway between Oklahoma City and Austin/San Antonio. Yet it seems that during the colder half of the year Dallas is often much milder than OKC and only slightly coller than Austin or even San Antonio. In January, Okla City av high is only around 50 but 58 at DFW (av 2000-2018) and low 60s for the latter. Since 2000 Oklahoma City has dropped below zeroF a few times (-5 in 2011) as low as 16 at San Antonio but no lower than 13 at DFW. Amazing. I know urban heat island definitely comes into play but there must be more to it. Similarly, Shreveport, LA (same lat as Dallas) seems to be much…

How possible is this projected hardiness zone map?

Hi all, I have seen several growing zone maps from all these different sources over the years and yet, none has felt right for my area. Most recently, there was a map posted over on the CFPACS board that really blew it for the Tampa Bay area. So, I decided to make my own zone map! No, it is not based upon any kind of hard data only empirical evidence of what is seen growing in the Bay area and a little bit of "gut feeling". I think this could be a fun project for many people to try to do if they want to make a very localized zone map outlining suspected and known micro climates - hot and cold. It would be cool to dedicate a sub forum, not unlike the freeze forum to custom…

Its not winter yet, thankfully, but the cold fronts have started. There have been cold fronts periodically, but you could never tell a difference from them, that is until the week before last week. A cold front came through and knocked morning temps into the low 60's, highs remained the upper 80's though. Looking ahead into this week, another cold front is forecast to sink south across the eastern US. Morning temps here are currently forecast to be in the upper 50's toward the end of this week, highs in the upper 70's to low 80's. If this comes to pass, it would be the first noticeable cold front of the season

Spring weather PNW 1 2 3
by Chester B- 81 replies

Spring? What spring? We've been about 10-15 degrees below normal and today hit with the latest snow in Portland's history. On top of that it's also the most snow we've had all winter. Schools closed, Highways closed, trees down everywhere and at least 50,000 without power. Depending on location some areas have 8", I have about probably about 3". It's the real wet heavy stuff. I'm glad I didn't buy an annuals yet, and left my Ensete in the garage.
