Coldest night of year on tap 1 2

Well, tonight is the big one and probably the last one of the year. Supposed to go down to the mid 20s (24-26F). Coldest up until now has been 29F. On the positive note, we're supposed to have a good rebound, with 70s in the 7 day forecast next week. Perfect setup tonight for a hard radiational freeze. Temps are supposed to drop like a rock. It's already in the low 40s and the sun just went down. This makes 2 years in a row that the coldest night of year is in Feb, and not Dec or Jan. It's supposed to be getting warm around here, avg high is nearing 70F. I'm tired of this, bring on the heat.

"A record low temperature of 18 degrees was set this morning at the Tallahassee Regional Airport at 729 am EST. This breaks the previous record of 21 set back in 1943. " my digital weather meter recorded a low of 23.4 I was about 6 ft from the house.( 5ft from the ground) so the middle of my yard probably saw a tad lower. none of my palms look damaged, no protection on anything was used. queen palms in the ground and in the pots look great. one of my smaller pygmy dates in the ground show minor leaf bronzing. few of my tropicals got burned, nothing life threating.

Freeze protection foam
by iwan- 27 replies

On the local news this morning they were highlighting vendors at the Tulare AG Expo, the world's largest farm services expo. They were featuring a frost/freeze protection foam touting 10-20F protection. Here is the link. http://www.kenncomfg.com/fm0100.htm Some of the pictures look similar to http://www.jackfrostfoam.com/latest.htm I suspect it is way out of the price point that home gardeners could afford, but imagine the possibilites of a consumer product. BTW, this company is in the backyard of one of our members down in FL.

My open yard temperature dropped to 29 degrees F this morning, the coldest day of the winter, due to radiational cooling conditions (yesterday my low was 30 degrees F). It was slightly warmer under tree canopy (lake front temps were 40-42 degrees. Water is everything during radiational cooling events here in inland central Florida). As bad as my open yard temperature was, the lower elevations of my property were even colder. I recorded a low of 25 degrees F in my shade house. This potted Hetrospath elata saw 25 degrees this morning and 26.6 yesterday morning, yet the leaves are undamaged. I guess this is because there was no frost in my shade house. Still, I was sur…

How badly do you hate winter?
by SubTropicRay- 20 replies

I can't begin to tell you how much I despise winter. The forecasters said 20% chance of rain last night. This usually equates to no rain right? I decided to leave the covers on about 10 plants already covered for Friday night's close call. The forecasted low for tonight is only 36F but why take chances. Guess what? It rained. Now I have to spend a good portion of the day drying soaked comforters. Did I mention that I hate winter? I openly tell northern transplants that say they like this chill to go back home. I hate winter.

What Kind of Winter Has It Been?
by happ- 16 replies

It seems that when an arctic invasion occurs on one side of the nation that warmth happens on the opposite coast. The polar jet stream has been active & made its presence quite notcable at times this winter. But, all & all, winter has actually been either near normal to much above normal. January was the warmest world-wide since the 1800's For example : PacificNW experienced a cold/wet early winter only to mellow-out in a more normal pattern of cool/wet. California has seen a very dull winter of mild but extremely dry conditions rudely interrupted by a week-long & devastating freeze in many parts of the state last month. Same with Texas though the cold …

Everybody in California & Florida know about how slight changes in elevation & location can mean life or death especially after this winter, but the same applies for us out in the arctic. Weather stations?

Somehow I got stuck looking www.ambientweather.com all day long.... Maybe all this freezing weather everyone is having has something to do with this... So I was curious, do any of ya'll use these systems to monitor the conditions of your immediate conditions in your locales... I would think this would be very pertinent data for our discussions... If so, which systems do you uses and what do you like/dislike about them? I think it would be cool to have all this data compiled on a computer and stored for reference... Kindof like creating our own "Farmer's Palmanac" (No one roll your eyes at my cheesey verbage, Thank you! )

Glad to see it raining for two days, even if we just get 0.5"-1.0". But wait a minute... is this going to polish off my palms that have a less than great chance of surviving? I know alot of rain is bad, but can I expect to see more damage from this amount.

The early part of next week looks cold again. The GFS forecasting model has Tampa down to 37F next Wednesday morning. That's down from 43F forecasted yesterday. Accuweather is saying how the northeastern part of the country may see the coldest February since 1978. I will start a post called "More On the Ridiculously Cold Winter" if the forecast comes to fruition. Ray

For the people that have been to my nursery, this is probably a shock to see. It was for me that afternoon when I drove over there. This is looking out the back end of the first shadehouse. Jeff
