Why I got hammered

I'm not going to post photos of my sick collection of toasted palms. Plenty like them on this site. What's been bugging me is how I got hit so much harder than other yards in my own neighborhood. I decided to hit the topos, and then made this lil' show-and-tell map. The San Luis Rey River is at 90ft above sea level at it's closest point to my house. I filled in all land below 100ft above seal level in blue. My yard is the red dot near the center of the map. Imagine a river of cold air coming out of that narrow channel to the northeast, and then spreading west and south. After winter lows of 28F, 28F and now 26F, I'm conceding to Zone 9B. (By the way, my map is…

June is right around the corner...more good news

From the Florida Daily Weather Discussion Page "Historically Florida has been very prone to hurricane strikes. Due to very unwise coastal over development, the Tampa Bay area megalopolis of 3+ million people will eventually become victim of the worst hurricane disaster in the history of the U.S., with dreadful loss of life of up to 20,000 due to drowning and up to $100 billion in property damage. In 2004 Hurricane Charlie almost became the storm for Tampa Bay." I thought I was gloomy.

Freeze Durations
by ZoneTenNut- 10 replies

Scanning through all the SoCal freeze threads, I'm just blown away by the number of hours below freezing many are experiencing and how this will affect their palms. What are your experiences and how cold for how long? What kind of damage did you receive from it and what made it and what didn't? What did you do to protect your stuff, if anything? What microclimates helped (ie. southern side of house)? Windbarriers? Here in West Palm Beach, Florida, we hit upper 20's in the 89 arctic blast, but temps quickly rebounded, so the duration wasn't long. As such, many things got burned, but survived. Curious to know what others experiences have been, on a prolonged cold sna…

Freeze 2007
by happ- 9 replies

This morning was a somber awakening for many palm gardeners in California In-fact, only Pacifica [near San Francisco] recorded a minimum above 40F & many areas normally considered frostless dropped perilously close to freezing w/ many broken records. Was this arctic event worse than Dec 1990? Personally, I don't think so when all the data is collected. But that's no solace for those who lost a fortune in plants. Hopefully most palms will recover It is still cold though the NWS has cut back on freeze warnings in most of SoCal though a frost advisory is still in effect in San Diego/Orange counties & freezing conditions will likely occur in much of No…

Howdy ya'all, Ok...what the %#$@ is going on here in So. Cal! A few days ago we were discussing record heat...NOW record cold! 35 F here in Westwood (W. LA) this morning. Not bad compared to some of you folks inland (although my basil growing on the patio looks a bit squirrelly). What were some of your lows this morning? Doug

I woke up this morning to a quarter inch of ice on my car, roof, and of course on the palms. It's over now. It never dropped below 30F, it just hovered around 30-32 for 2 days. 2 degrees higher and it would have been all rain. I spent 15 to 20 minutes banging ice off the cars, and knocking ice off palms. House and car looking like an ice cube Washys looking sad queen looking sad

Just in time for MLK day, we're supposed to have lows in the "low 30's". I have a King, Triangle, S. uresana, and A. micrantha pushing spears and two Queens starting to bloom! I don't know if it'll do any good, but I broadcast muriate of potash and epsom salts and watered them in. It's probably not soon enough for them to absorb the anitfreeze. Steve

Canopy is key
by tropicalb- 4 replies
- 1.1k views
well...it seems Dr. Darian was right. Start with a big canopy. After going through all the threads concerning the damage done during this freezing weather, one fact rings true: Palms located underneath canopy for the most part escaped major damage, while those left out in the open were decimated. (I can already hear the "duh's!!!, but how many people actually heed what they already know to be true and plant the canopy trees first?) Had I known that the 80+ year old Pepper tree at my Dad's house with it's thin leaves would have provided SO much protection over the last few nights, I would have drug all the plants over to that area a LOT sooner. I really didn't …

California freeze data

Comments and info are spread all over the place here on this board. I'm proposing a specific thread that we can share data re location , elevation, duration, lows/highs, wind/no wind, as well as effects, good or bad. We need to learn from our losses..share what worked and what didn't. Also visit freinds garden who aren't PalmTalkers, and gather info. Kinda like CRDB, but Calif specific. Lets share ideas on this thread, and maybe post the DATA thread as a sticky once we figure out format..thoughts? PS..sorry I let you guys down with no 'Countdown to disaster...Trilogy' last night...I just didn't want to play anymore

Are the zones still the same?
by Palmy- 11 replies

As many of you know, there has been a very cold freeze in the west. My question is do zones change becuase of it getting so cold. After this freeze am I still zone 9b, considering it was 21f? I hear it was in the mid/upper teens in the 1990 freeze and the zones did not change. As much as I would love to say Im 9b, its very hard to grow 9b species here. Still 9b? 4 days of under 25F, 3 just recently and 1 earlier this year.

6:30 am and it's 33F in the coldest part of my backyard. Going over to Dad's place a little later to uncover the damaged kings, and hope not see any more newly damaged plants, given the effort put forth to protect them last night...I can bet you that it got down into the low 20's over there again last night. I'll post photos on this thread later. due to a combination of location and cold-hardiness I believe, species there that showed only slight damage as of yesterday include : Brahea armata Brahea nitida Livistona chinensis Livistona decipiens Livistona australis Dioon spinulosum Cycas taitungensis Cycas revoluta Trachycarpus fortunei Chamaerops humilus v…

While reading through the local discussion I came across this and thought it was worth posting.... needles to say it was a long discussion and pay attention to the last sentence Problem 3: one of the very few times I hope a forecast busts...but it appears southeast Texas could see some significant ice problems early in the week as colder air filters in and overrunning moisture and disturbances prolong the precipitation into midweek. Threat appears to begin late Monday afternoon across northern portions of the County Warning Area as temperatures fall below freezing. Then as the remainder of the area falls below freezing Monday nt...threat expands to almost …

The Impending Big SoCal Freeze

Okay...so featured below is what i did today to combat the impending inclement (to say the least!) weather...took all the stuff that wasn't very well protected medium-hard-to-find-not-very-cold-hardy-palms and put them in the coldframe. Took all the palms and cycads that were in the coldframe and did THIS (Someone please tell my wife I'm NOT crazy...here is my living room tonight): another view of the same room: still one more view (wanna have some fun? how many species of palms and cycads can you identify?)
