Forecast Game
by spockvr6- 11 replies

So many times after a cold event, I always try and reflect back on what the various forecasts were and how things actually went. Invariably, I can never recall with 100% certainty, or even 50% certainty. That changes today! As of 1045AM this morning, Ive gone to 4 major forecast sources and captured a screen shot of their forecasts for my zip code (34689). And, I will post them here to look back on tomorrow AM as a fun sort of "game". Seeing as how their is such a wide exapnse of predictions, lets all take guesses as to which one pans out for tonight/tomorrow morning . The "official" arbiter of actual low temperature will be my weather station, the data for…

I just copied what was important "8-14 DAY OUTLOOK FOR JAN 27 - FEB 02, 2007: THE COLD PATTERN FOR THE SOUTH AND EAST WILL LIKELY CONTINUE INTO WEEK 2. IF THE FORECASTED HEIGHT PATTERN VERIFIES... THEN RECORD SETTING COLD IS POSSIBLE ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST INCLUDING FLORIDA."

01/30/07 Freeze Damage
by Tag- 1 reply

Well, I thought that I had gotten out of this unscathed, but apperantly not. My two king palms are showing around 35 - 40 % leaf damage. This is very surprising to me. They survived 26 last year with frost and similar damage. We only got down to 30.2 last night, there was visible frost on the ground, but I did not notice any on these two palms. There was definitely frost on a C. Ochlandra, Pigmy Date, and Foxtail, but there is no noticaeable damage on any of those. I know that they'll pull through and look fine in a few months because they grow like weeds, but I thought they would be undamaged after last year. I am worried about the damage getting worse too, there …

Gas Grill may add some needed heat
by landarch- 2 replies

You might try to position your gas grill near some tender palms. Of course, be sure not to ignite the palm or any frost cloth that you may have placed near. This may act as an added source of heat and help the plants that it is near get through the heavy weather. Additionally I strap my landscape lights near the bud on occasion, you may chuckle if you desire. Thank you

Perth today and for the next few days is melting. It's over 39C today. The forecast is tomorrow 39, Saturday is 40C, Sunday is 38C and the nights are around 23C. Meant to get thunderstorms this arvo. Kinda dry at the moment. This should change if it rains. Monday is meant to be 32C and humid, the same for Tuesday, then rain and more humidity after that. I'm actually expecting low 40's from tomorrow on. I will be watering heaps to keep the humidity up. Summer has finally arrived. regards Tyrone

From Frank Strait, Accuweather meteorologist ".....The not-as-cold-as-I-thought-it-would-be air mass is still on schedule to arrive tomorrow night into Thursday for areas from the Carolinas to Florida. It looks cold enough for a freeze possible Thursday or Friday night in the usual cold spots of central Florida, but that isn't too out of the ordinary. The citrus looks safe ... for now, anyway......." Why do I sense some dissapointment in his blog?

Cold must be over

I guess HD thinks the cold is over. I walked into HD to check out the nursery today and noticed they have a whole bunch of palms out including BIG (20') foxtails and queens, and a bunch of big bizzies. 2 days after the ice storm. I guess they aren't worried about any more cold or ice.

Life After The FREEZE

I had an hour to kill while in downtown Los Angeles. So with camera in hand, I looked over plant life post-freeze. It should be noted that NWS did not actually report freezing temperatures in most of the LA Basin but there was noticable damage here & there. It also was noticable that park & street palms seemed to be the most unhealthy versus business/private gardens. Kings in Pershing SQ

Cold without end

Well, there was frost again on the grass this morning. Aside from last weeks record setting freeze, this winter started on the last day or two of November for me. Since that time, there have been perhaps 6 or 7 nights when ice did not develop on my vehicle, that is, when there was enough humidity to allow for it's formation. In prior yers I could count the nights that this occured on one hand. So much for the weatherman's outlook of low 40's nighttime temps for the week. It's quite the laboratory experiment on just what "cold hardy" means... Bret

All After last week's cold front that sent all of us central/southeasterly Texans into a conniption fit, we have settled back into our "normal" weather pattern: mid-50's during the day, around 40 at night. We had mid-60's and some sun on Sunday; but, it's still too overcast to feed enough of the blue spectrum to the photosensitive cells of my retinal ganglia. This, of course, is keeping my circadian rhythm still quite out of sorts. I'm just glad I'm not like likely to suffer the extreme effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder like those under the great winter blanket of northern latitudes. Anyhow, I'm bored with my weather, and this weather thread for that matter.…

On January 19th, 1977, snow fell in South Florida for the first time in recorded history. Residents and visitors were both surprised and thrilled at the rare phenomena, and local newspapers ran headlines which were nearly as big as it would be for major National or world events. Snow was seen across all of Southeast Florida as far south as Homestead and even on Miami Beach. Reports of snow were also received at Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on the other side of the Gulf Stream from Southeast Florida. Although snow in Florida is not as rare as it is believed to be, the farthest south snow had been previously observed was along a Fort Myers to Fort Pierce line in Februa…

All, The forecast low for last night was 30 degrees F. My location got all the way down to 49 degrees with a strong breeze! A miss of a few degrees is OK, but 19?! I could do that job! Hopefully, the wind will decrease and temps remain stable. Hooray!

How do I proceed?

I'm pretty sure one of the reasons my palms did so poorly was that they were underwatered. I was following common wisdom to only water maybe once a week during the winter, since most of my palms hate "cold, wet feet." I'm inclined to start watering twice a week, hoping it will help my palms recover. Good move? I Have no idea. The forecast is lows in the mid 30s and highs in the mid 60s as far as the eye can see. Being locked in a rainless Santa Ana scenario until Spring is very likely. I'm resetting the sprinklers today, and would love some advice. Should I wait until March to trim off the dead fronds?

Countdown to disaster part 2 1 2 3

Well, time for another fitfull night. NWS has offered up this little tidbit to make us all feel better: MINIMUM TEMPERATURES TONIGHT ARE EXPECTED TO FALL TO THE LOW TO MID 20S WITH A FEW UPPER TEENS POSSIBLE AT THE COLDER LOCATIONS. TEMPERATURES AT THE COLDER LOCATIONS COULD FALL BELOW 32 DEGREES SOON AFTER SUNSET WITH THE LOWEST TEMPERATURES OCCURRING AROUND SUNRISE. DURATIONS OF TEMPERATURES OF 32 DEGREES OR LOWER COULD BE AS MUCH AS 12 TO 13 HOURS. Adding to all this BS, my fireplace insert(which I heat my house with) is belching smoke into the house everytime I open the door. Must be some kind of inversion going on...

And the show ain't over yet...
by tropicalb- 15 replies

The saddest part about all of this cold is the fact that it's STILL not over...it froze here in San Marcos last night (ice all over the tops of the cars and frost on all the roofs and lawns in my area, due to the fact that we actually had some moisture overhead available to freeze), it's going to freeze AGAIN tonight and probably tomorrow night as well.... Ice on top of the coldframes and frost all over at the Dad place in Vista this morning, taking a toll on palms and other plants that had shown little or no damage at all over the last six nights. At this point...i'll be surprised if I have anything over there left alive in 10 more days or so...

How did the nurseries fare?
by doubravsky- 12 replies

It hit me watching the news talk about tripling of prices for citrus. How did the palm nurseries down San Diego County fare through all of this... both home based and more official types? I know Dave and Steve are talking significant losses.. (sorry guys... feel your pain). Will the prices of palms be significantly affected? I'm now thinking replacement may take a lot of looking and more scratch than the initial purchase... any thoughts>?
