Nature Runs Riot In Europe

Nature Runs Riot In Europe's Very Warm Winter by Emmanuel Angleys Paris (AFP) March 16, 2007 Wheat harvested a month early, markets bursting with prematurely ripened produce, animals migrating too soon or not at all -- Europe's warmest winter on record has made nature run amok, experts across the continent have reported. With average temperatures in the three winter months of December through February more than 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) above average in most European countries, the environment's biological clock has been thrown off kilter, they say. In Italy, emerging from the mildest winter in more than two centuries according to Bologna's Institut…

Moving to sunny South Africa

Next year I will be moving to Richards Bay in South Africa which is exciting as hopefully it will mean I will be able to grow a lot of plants I cannot at the moment. I've never been up there and though I know the climate is described as subtropical I'm not sure exactly what this means will be happy up there. Also, being from the Mediterranean Western Cape I have no experience of subtropical gardening so it will probably be a steep learning curve. Richards Bay lies at about 28 degrees South and about 150 km North East of Durban. It has never recorded frost and most of the rain falls in summer. I'm guessing the climate will be somewhat similar to that of South Florida or…

Tropical, Subtropical, Temperate and Frigid

The following was summarized from information on the Wikipedia web site. The tropics are the geographic region centered on the equator and limited in latitude by the Tropic of Cancer at approximately 23°30' N latitude and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23°30' S latitude. The word "tropics" comes from Greek tropos meaning "turn", because the apparent position of the Sun oscillates between the two tropics with a period that defines the average length of a year. In the Tropics, the sun is directly overhead at least once during the year - at the edges of the tropics this occurs at the summer solstice and over the equator at the equinoxes. This is the hottest part of the…

AccuWeather Announcement - March 15, 2007 Intense Storm Set To Lash Eastern Seaboard Over The Next 48-60 Hours; Major Snow, Sleet Threat For Much Of The Northeast With Severe Weather A Concern For The Florida Peninsula Contrary to popular belief, winter is not yet over. To illustrate this point, consider that a fairly impressive winter storm is organizing which will affect most of Appalachia and the Eastern Seaboard during the next 60 hours or so. A variety of weather elements are involved, not the least of which are chances for heavy sleet and snow, strong winds, a temporary shift to bitter cold, and even a severe thunderstorm threat from the FL Peninsula along th…

As forecast, today turned quite warm with many readings in the 90's [hot spot in LA area was Beverly Hills @ 97F/36.1c]. Pattern looks set for more heat into the week though cooling down to near normal temps by late in the week. I could feel the warm-up overnight as the temp rose from 61F/16.1c at midnight to 66F/18.8c by 4:00 AM and soared shortly after sunrise. Extremely low dew point temps & relative humidity [single digits] and gusty winds have produced the usual wild fires [the worst blaze in Santa Ana Mts near Anaheim Tonight should stay at or above 70F/21c in foothill locations with possibly hotter maximums tomorrow. Great for the palms so long a…

Cold in Cali Again!
by happ- 37 replies

After yesterday's very disappointing storm [cold fronts bring wind & a very little rain a mini plunge of polar air follows. Expect minimums in the 30's inland except were it is windy. 40's across basin. This is cold air blowing strongly over California [gusts over 30 mph at my location]. As long as it stays in the "blowing" stage, we are safe. But this week will be cooler than normal w/ some clouds at times [& probably no rain. El Nino is slipping way Incredible visibility of over 50 miles. Santa Catalina Is looks so close This always seems the pattern during Academy Awards night. ???

This current weather pattern (lows in the 30s, highs in the upper 50s low 60's, cold rain events stacked up 5 days apart) is exactly what I was talking about a few weeks ago. If this persists,as it did last spring, kiss your damaged-but-might-make-it palms good bye.

I know this topic comes up from time to time but here we go again: When discussing the cold tolerance of palms could it be that the real criteria for marginal plant success is the number of hours below freezing as opposed to the actual low temperature? Here in the central valley a low temperature usually is followed by a gradual warming but in Florida, often a lower temperature occurs, but is followed by a quicker warming. Also, the photos of the maturing Roystonea in Houston, Tex. (9a) seem to support the idea that their number of days over 86 F is more important than the actual low temperatures (repeated failures in 9b) for this heat loving species. Do we ne…

Monsoon trough powering up
by Tyrone- 3 replies

The monsoon trough across the top end of OZ has reformed and gaining strength. With El Nino officially ended wetter conditions and more cyclones are favoured now. A tropical low is likely to form into a cyclone by tomorrow or Thursday off the Nth coast of QLD. Another low worth watching is in the Gulf of Carpentaria and another tropical low is expected to form and move off the coast of the Kimberley in North West WA by about Tuesday Wednesday next week. Hold on, this could get bumpy. Tyrone

El Niño
by bgl- 17 replies

There was so much talk about El Niño a couple of months ago. but I havn't heard anything lately. Which is fine with me, because El Niño means very dry conditions for Hawaii. I stopped paying attention to weather forecasts about 5-6 years ago when I realized that despite all the technology and weather satellites that exist today I'm better off just looking out the window, so I have to admit I wasn't really paying much attention. But I'm just curious - did they cancel this El Niño or what happened? Up to this morning we've had 25.45 inches/650 mm of rain so far in 2007. That's above average! By comparison, on the same day in Feb 2006 we were up to 18.03 inches (and 2006 w…

Keep your head on a swivel (as Ron Burgundy suggests). More talk of the cold stuff coming down yet again. From NWS: "....A SECOND PUSH OF COLD AIR MOVES IN BY FRIDAY AS STRONG HIGH PRESSURE DROPS INTO THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO. THIS AIRMASS COULD BE COLDER THAN WE ARE CURRENTLY ADVERTISING...ESPECIALLY IF THE HIGH SETTLES OVER THE EASTERN GULF AND FLORIDA PENINSULA SATURDAY MORNING AS CURRENT GUIDANCE IS SUGGESTING. WILL KEEP TEMPS SEVERAL DEGREES ABOVE GUIDANCE FOR NOW AND WAIT FOR FUTURE RUNS TO CONFIRM THE COLDER SCENARIO." Ray
