Record Cold 1 2 3
by Daryl- 109 replies

What a winter it has been so far. We have had some of the coldest weather in recorded history. We are experiencing yet another cold snap here, with more to come. The strange thing is that our local airport has recorded both the warmest July day ever and the coldest minimum as well. This is a location about 1 kilometre from the ocean. Lucky for me so far my temps have not been as cold as the airport. Here are some stats for the month up to yesterday. Last night the airport minimum temp was 0.0C!!! regards, Daryl.

Worst weather ever recorded
by Nigel- 33 replies
- 1.8k views
The metoffice today confirmed what a lot of us in the UK already knew. 2007 is the worst summer ( 2/3rds in) ever recorded in 250 years. Much of the country under floods. Zero heat, in Bristol not one day has reached 25C. Almost no sunshine. Apparently people are falling ill to a new illness related to SAD. They are calling it SWISS, summertime winter induced symptoms syndrome . Theres a lot of it about ! Global warming is not what we thought it would be here ! 18 months without a summer is a long long time.

Low Humidity 1 2 3

Summer is here in South Florida. The Gulf Stream is about 90 degrees. Our low temperatures are angling towards the low 80's.The most difficult aspect ,however, is the relative humidity. When my wife and family travel West, one of the most enjoyable features is the lack of humidity. 110 degrees F feels like 85 degrees F here. My question is : Do you realize how nice it is when you live year round in that environment? How does it feel when you come to Florida? Is there anything bad you can say about the lack of humidity?

San Diego Rainfall 1850-2007
by osideterry- 10 replies

I found a dated graph, and decided to update it. I added the last three years, put in decades and an average rainfall line. Then I made each below average year red, and each above average year blue. Since I moved to San Diego 9 years ago, 2 years have had at or above average rainfall. There is no pattern, and in fact the period from 1945-1965 is way worse than anything recent.

July thread
by steve 9atx- 20 replies

I hope this isn't a duplication, but I haven't seen a July thread yet..... Here's my weather: rain almost every day. 9" over "average", 6" over last year, 33.93" YTD as of yesterday. Highs up to 10F below normal, lows a degree or two above normal, both probably attributable to the cloudcover and precipitation. My yard is a jungle, lot's of trimming this year. I'm also starting to worry about fungal problems with all the rain, especially concerning my StAugustinegrass. One suggested feature for Americans is that if you add your zip code to your weather report, we can go straight to your forecast on WeatherUnderground and/or other weather sites. I'm at 77098. …

Hey all you So. Callers. Did you get rain today? Imagine my surprise when I woke up today and it was RAINING! I thought it was dreaming! I have been coming here for 18 years and I have never seen rain in the summer. I know that some of the folks inland receive summer rain, but it rarely makes it to the coast. How much did you get? Wacky weather
by Palmy- 3 replies

Comming back from Fresno, it started raining like crazy. There was hail, lightning, and heavy rain. I was driving on 5, and nothing I would expect. Its to bad that I packed the camera in the trunk. Nothing to serious, but it was interesting to see this in California. Some of this monsoonal moisture is making close. I have measured trace ammounts of rain 3 times this july. Extreme rarity it would seem...

Could be the Wettest year EVER!
by NBTX11- 20 replies
- 1.3k views
We are absolutely swimming in water. Areas of floods all over the state the past couple months. Many in areas that don't normally get floods. This could yet be the wettest year ever in many areas of TX. San Antonio, for example has had about 33 inches of rain so far this year (32.59 as of 2 days ago), not including the rain we got last night or today. It has been raining and raining and raining. That is about the annual normal total in just a little over 6 months. We could end up with 55-60 inches or rain easily at this rate, which would shatter the all time record of around 53 inches. During the last 33 days, we have had about 25 days with at least some rai…

arizona monsoon in place horray!
by sonoranfans- 3 replies

All my palms are loving it, the monsoon is here in force. Humidity has been above 50% every morning for a week and we even got a little rain(0.6 inch), the first accumulation near my house since march. this years dry/hot season was a long one. Without supplemental watering(other than drip system), I would have alot of cooked fronds now. I have 2 butias showing 4-5 burned lower fronds(they see late day sun). Our temps have dropped 10 degrees to 97-100 range for the daytime high, perfect palm growing weather. As a verification, my bizzies started to open up new spears -that were just sitting there for the past month- almost simultaneously. The braheas are positivel…

SoCal Water Issues
by osideterry- 20 replies
- 1.1k views
Most of us SoCal types on this board take our ability to irrigate our gardens for granted. I keep hearing things like we are going to lose percentages of our Colorado River and Northern California usage, and that eventually our water bills are going to go way up. I was wondering if anyone here is planting with less irrigation in mind. A garden based on phoenix, butia, brahea, etc, and xeriscape plants like yucca, agave and other succulents could be very impressive. Any thoughts?

New Record Set
by Jim in Los Altos- 2 replies

I woke up this morning to the sound of rain! This is the first July 18th in history that measureable rain has fallen in the Bay Area. Only a few hundreths of an inch but enough to clean and brighten my taller palms. Rain ended by late afternoon and skies are, again, clear, cloudless ones that we typically experience in July and most of the summer here.

Heavy frost in Cordoba
by Gaston in Argentina- 3 replies

Wow! It´s unusualy cold here at this momment, heavy frost, ice on the streets, and palms suffering a lot. Being at 8:10 hs. termometer tell -5,2° C. with clear sky (radiational frost) Im really worried by my only good sized Parajubaea cocoides and my tall Chambeyronia macrocarpa.- Caryota himalaya seems with the leaves brown but im sure this will recover for much defoliation that would be.- The cold will be for the week say the TV forecast. Will see how the palms surrvive to this.-
