Looks like there's a big storm coming down off Alaska, though it might not make it far enough south to make it possible to skip watering again this weekend . . . Any thoughts? dave

August 26,1949 Hurricane
by bubba- 0 replies

On August 26,1949 another Hurricane hit the Palm Beach area with a path very similar to the September 16,1928 Hurricane. Specifically, it was another Cape Verde Storm that hit Palm Beach and it's environs and traveled through the Glades and Lake Okeechobee. The Army Corp. had built dykes around the Lake by this time and there was no catastrophe related to water like there was in the 1928 storm in the Glades. It was not classified as a Great Hurricane like the 1928 storm by the US Weather Bureau, which is interesting because top winds were officially measured at 153 MPH. The minimum pressure was 28.17 inches. The 1928 storm according to "authorities" had a lower wind spee…

Sept.16, 1928

Seventy nine years ago and a day, the strongest Hurricane on record in our area scored a direct hit on Palm Beach and moved on to make nefarious history in the Glades. At approximately 6:00PM on a Sunday evening without the fanfare of the Weather Channel, a powerful Cape Verde storm made landfall.I had the priviledge to sit and listen to my grandfather and six other gentlemen relate the stories of their personal storm experience. On some level, they were all the same. Each person was injured in some manner, whatever structure they were in was largely destroyed and each person ,after securing their family, took one of the many trucks headed out to the Glades ,where they had he…

Howdyall: Put on my red shoes and did a rain dance. The BEST torrential rain pelted La Habra, and I actually stuck out my tongue, and it tasted sweet. My inner child definitely came to the fore. If I was 6, I'd have ripped off my clothes and ran around the block . . . . Ahem. Last year was SO DRY. (Last year as in Rainy season.) An Inch and a half fell, enough that I don't have to water this weekend, for the first time in Heaven only knows how long. How about the rest of you? How much did you get?

Heavy rains hit South Kona areas
by Al in Kona- 5 replies

Yesterday afternoon (Sep. 1) off and on heavy downpours of rain hit many, if not most areas of South Kona. My rain gage showed almost 127mm or 5 inches. In summer we normally do get a lot of afternoon or early evening showers but this one was exceptionally heavy. Did you guys in other areas of the islands receive much? Steve in Waianae, Norm in Kaneohe, Bo, Jerry, Garrin, Mike and others on the Windward side plus Dean (Koloko mauka) and Tom (Waiohinu) and anyone else?

Hurricanes in San Diego?
by bubba- 6 replies

I know San Diego was hit with a Cat 1 in October of 1858. Have their been any more recent experiences in Coastal California or Gulf of California that effect California or Arizona?Any research on the greater propensity as things seem to continue to warm up?

frozen Lipsticks
by aussiearoids- 6 replies

Heard from a few locals recently about very large clumps of Lippys carking it . One guy who bought his large block a few years ago mainly because of the 6m high clump of Lippys near the pool , lamented the fact that recent high winds had blown over a few of the large stems he thought had just been burnt badly by the cold . This was at Feluga , that is even further north than me , though its fairly flat there , I have a large range of hills very close to me here [my rain magnet] . wow what a super cold winter for this supposedly tropical area .

I have a feeling that TD4 will skirt the East Coast as Hurricane Dean. The Bermuda High is just right to zip it along the entire coast Look out New York City. Not to mention that a storm is forming that could hit South Texas in a few days! Oh, and Aloha Flossie.

Cycles of weather
by bubba- 7 replies

In Florida, our most recent serious freezes took place in 1983, 1985 and 1989. Interestingly, the most recognized series of serious freezes took place in 1893, 1895 and 1899. Does this suggest some format of a ninety year cycle or is it simple "co-ink- ee-dink"?

Hottest Place In The World

Obviously, we know about Death Valley, Ca. and other spots in the Sahara. My question concerns locations that combine high temperatures with high humidity levels. In other words, where is the hottest place in the world when full consideration is given to high temperatures and high humidity? Simply stated, the most uncomfortably hot place on Earth?

Cuba

Some of you guys will be well aware that following our last Bi in the DR a few members secided to go on to Cuba. I was tempted but did not go for two reasons 1) I dont like Fidel or his brother and 2) I dont like communism. Apologies moderator but that is about the only "political" thing I have ever said and it will be my last. Something positive now! Apart from all the many Royals all over Cuba the Jardin Botanico Nacional boasts of at least - wait for it - 162 species of palm. Now I know why those guys went: Temptation and good botanical intentions! The road to hell etc. Regardez Juan
