Get Ready.....

Checking the accuweather forecast models on the pro site for the next 15 days, looks like those of us in Southern California are going to heat up in a major way starting on Monday, if not sooner. Those in the rest of the country look like they are going to cool down substantially. That would be a change form this horrible 60s garbage we have going on. Barely reached 72 today for a short time.

Earth, Wind and FIRE

Yesterday a long drive from north of Point Conception down to San Diego, and coming into the Ventura area, an eerie dark cloud was hanging over the Channel Islands. Fog bank? Dust cloud from the high winds? Smoke....? Soon that eerie orange glow from the sun informed us it was smoke, and coming into the Camarillo area, the smell assaulted us. The wicked offshore wind whipped the flags straight out, blew over trees, and pushed the car sideways. Fire in Malibu, Kanan Road, then much further south another just starting in the mountains. I called ahead to San Diego, already two fires were burning there and a confirmed fatality. This morning, it's much worse; 10 …

Sadly this fine actress passed away a couple of days ago. She was of course known for "From Here To Eternity" with palms galore. I wonder how many other of her films featured palms? One for certain showed Trachycarpus - anyone know the answer? Were there any others? Clue: at least one. Regardez Juan

It goes into effect March 22: Landscape irrigation and maintenance for homes with under five acres Watering permitted Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 4-8 a.m. for addresses ending in an odd number. I see now that I can look up on line what I think is the the most accurate weather man locally..... The crazy cool John Coleman guy. From my earlier years racing where I watched the weather for weekends ALOT, I found him to be by far the most accurate. Anyhoo, heres a link. http://www.kusi.com/weather You can read his thoughts on the global warming issue if you look about.

Summer ripening
by Bilbo- 0 replies

This has been one of the best summers for late autumn ripening that I can remember - lotsa sun and warmth = excellent ripening and build up of natural plant "anti-freeze" for winter to come. Hope this proves true for others in UK and indeed everyone in this hemisphere. Regardez Juan

Climate Change

I was searching around for more information on the last ice age and it's impacts on climate and came up with this article, The last ice age to present. There are some intersting points raised here. One is that there have been abrupt changes in world temperatures many times over the last 150,000 years. There have been warm times simlar to today and much colder drier times. I have always been fascinated by the ice ages as I was raised in an area that was glaciated in recent history, northern Montana. Here in Amazonia little concrete is really known about the exact conditions during the colder times, but the forest apparently was much smaller. With the sea level as mu…

Sorry I had forgot...
by BS Man about Palms- 4 replies

I have to apologize. I had forgot the correlation. When my big garage/house addition was started it was way back in spring of 2004 and went into the wet winter of 2004/2005. It seemed anytime I had work to do on the house that should be dry it would rain at the time or very close to it. Each step towards a dry house resulted in less rain overall. Had a breif time in 2006 had to open stuff.....more rain. Well, my framer was scheduled to come out Saturday morning so we could go over the work he was to do on the "older" part of my house. We BOTH remembered that when he was near or working on my house, rain was emminent. SO, its my fault we've been dry for so…

Ok, this is just nasty. Santa Ana is in full force. Yesterday was nasty but this morning is even worse. I just got 68 degrees F, w/ 15% humidity reading @ 9:00 am. It's expected to heat up to around 90F. This means single digit humidity expected for sure in the drier areas. Ohhh dear...

WINDY WEATHER

Lots of wind today, my shadehouse has been blown around in its first mild bit of wind... The wood structure ripped a couple small tears in my shadecloth. Some pots that were stacked in a corner fell over and my groundcover has been blown all over the place... This is the first time I have encountered any kind of wind since I built the second shadehouse. I can imagine now how catastrophic hurricane force winds will be if they ever come across my palm operation... It will be bad ... Did anyone else have any wind damage? Here's a couple photos around the shadehouse....
