Patterns of World Lightning Strikes
by amazondk- 3 replies
- 1.6k views
Since there is a lot of information on lightning in the weather these days I looked up a NASA map on global ligtning strikes around the world. It looks like that the champ is in Central Africa. I think that Brazil actually has the most lightning strikes per year as a country. But, since it is so large and it is all tropical this only makes sense. It does not mean the most lightning strikes per KM2. dk

Talked with a friend and his bride who spent the month of March 2008 in Austalia and New Zealand. They are serious Fishermen and went to Cooktown for the Great Barrier Reef.Sadly, the weather did not cooperate and their guide said it had been horrible for 6 weeks and this was not normal. When is the best time to go for the best weather? He was also talking about a very good beer called Huighy(sp).Very dry.The pictures were unbelievable.

A very wet start to winter in the tropics ..
by aussiearoids- 13 replies
- 2.4k views
Oh well the 1 week drought had to end sooner or later .. been pouring all day . Had several heavy showers down the beach yesterday , so the Monster market was a bit of a wash out . I was a man on a mission and donned raincoat and gumboots as I had some very exotic fruit trees to pick up . Really hope it does not get to cold this winter , don't want recent plantings freezing to death , BRRRRR it is a cool 22C at the moment ... I may have to put on a jacket . yeh yeh , I know what a softie , but once you are completely 'troppo' I think your blood turns to a thick treacle like substance and needs high temps or RUM to circulate properly.

Cool in the West

Down here in the fringe Tropics,we are entering that predictable cycle of humidity, sunny and hot till around the afternoon.Building Cumulous from the West brings the Big Boomers and the only question is do they make it to the Ocean. This will be the pattern till early December. We will get our Excitement from Late August through October watching those wisps of clouds that blow off the Sahara and conjecturing where they go and do we take the lick.It makes you pine for that great time between December and March, when we can hope for cool breezes. All in all Summer is not a bad time at all, even though you got to be ready to sweat.Ocean luckily gives us a breeze making much more …

After 4 days in a row,I think we can say Wet Season has officially clocked in.Year to date is 20.72 inches with normal 17.24.That does not include some very wet downpours going on now.Lake Okeechobee is only 9.75 ft when average is 13.62 ft.South Florida Water Management likes to keep the canals full instead of the Lake.

Large Tornado Rips Through Northern Denver

http://www.myfoxcolorado.com/myfox/pages/H...mp;pageId=1.1.1 Scary stuff. I was outside for much of today and it has been rediculously windy. I've had all sorts of potted palms blow over. At this point it looks like only one person has been killed, but hundreds have been seriously injured. Anyhow, now we're worried about flash flooding as it has been pouring rain for quite a while here in southern denver...

Southern Brevard County, Florida (Palm Bay, Malabar, Grant, Valkaria) had several arson fires yesterday during a spell of high winds, then fewer but bigger ones today with less wind but drier air. Palm Bay is mostly a huge old subdivision where lots were sold, and actual building of houses was done individually, lot by lot. So there's a lot of empty lots full of overgrown, flammable vegetation. Same goes for the areas south of Palm Bay, except the lots are bigger and some land has been bought as green space. I think there'll be some concern about leaving the vegetation in such flammable condition, but if Florida history is any guide, nothing will be done, except t…

Weird Spring
by Coloradoboi- 4 replies

Out here in Colorado we have had a very strange springtime. Seriously. It feels like January in California. So far in May I have recorded 2.24 inches of rain (which is a pretty good amount of rainfall for our area). We have had a bunch of cool rainy days with some afternoon sunshine. The High temperature today was only 53 degrees. It snowed last weekend down here in Denver. Fortunately, Nothing accumulated. The mountains have so much snow this year that ski-resorts are closing this weekend because of avalanche danger! But I am ready for some warm weather!!

April Weather Thread 1 2 3

...hemispheres that is... Anyway, what is going on where you are? California? Australia? England? South Africa? New Zealand? Anyone? A summertime pattern of daytime heat and humidty followed by evening thunderstorms is in place right now. Last day of March and first 2 days of April have seen widespread showers and thunderstorms across the southern 2/3 of FL. Actually kinda' strange to have this pattern so early. Could the weather be forshadowing a nasty hurricane season ??? Palms are loving this spring so far and I like this weather as long as it lasts but I am sure we will have an extended dry spell coming before the real summer rain pattern sets in.

Obviously, this is dry season in the South part of the State. This is a normal occurence commencing in Nov.-May each year.At Palm Beach International, our normal rainfall to April 23 is 12.67 inches.Tampa is 9.58 inches through April.Currently,PBA reflects over 18 inches of rain although it appears quite dry. Most of our rainfall this year has occurred at night, which is common but more so this year.I can not locate information specifying what the current rainfall is this year in area's like Tampa.Does anyone know? Additionally,I note that average yearly rainfall at PBA is 61.39 inches.Tampa is 44.77.What accounts for this large difference?

We have had a horrible winter, and from the looks of things, it is nowhere near being over. another 4-6 inches of snow expected? Come on! My tulips haven't even bloomed yet. There are barely any trees that are even beginning to show signs of life in them. What a depressing spring!

Well, It looks like this summer is going to be a scorcher. Yesterday, Xmas day was 41C, the hottest Xmas reading since 1968, but today it has just reached 43.4C which is a record here for December. Even Garden Island, a few km's off shore has reached 43C, which must be a record. It's hard keeping humidity up in this situation. So how hot have others got this southern summer? regards Tyrone

With winter coming to a close, I thought it would be interesting to know how cold it got in some of our member's yards. That's a hard question for those on hilly properties so maybe give us an average of the lowest temps. recorded on your probes. My lowest this winter was 34F.

Last winter there were several threads where we would all check in every morning after a really cold one (weather that is not beer) and report our cold temps for the night. I found the comparisons very educating and the info really helped me solidify my decision on where to live when Jen and I moved earlier this year. So I thought I'd start this thread where us Southern Californians can congregate and report temps for comparison and education sake all winter long. This way the temp info is all in one place instead of a bunch of random threads that always seem to get duplicated in multiple forums. So SOCAL, lets give it a try and see how it goes. I hit 45F this morn…

Much discussion about warm Non-Tropical area's on the Board. How about those area's that are technically tropical(ie below 23 degrees Latitude North/South)that experience colder than expected temperatures. This,of course, requires Sea Level. My surprise nominee is Hong Kong, located at 22 degrees 15 minutes.Notwithstanding this Tropical location,32F.is the recorded low.(Freezing in the Tropics?)The average temperature in Jan. is 60.5F.The average temperature of the Ocean is 63F. during the month of Jan.Any other likekind examples?

Summer started already

As usual, we skip right past spring and go straight to summer in South Texas in Mar/Apr. It was 105F (40C) in Laredo yesterday, 104 in McAllen, 101 in Kingsville and Alice, 96 in San Antonio and so on. The 90 degree heat surged all the way north to North TX, was 88F in Wichita Falls along the Oklahoma border. Another hot day today (90-100) throughout most of South TX from San Antonio to the Mexico border.
