Snow in San Antonio (at least on the Northwest side) tonight! Probably no big deal to a lot of you, but major deal here. This does not happen often in this part of Texas. A couple of pictures of light dusting on some of my palms.

"Hurrcun Wisdom" and Hebert's Boxes
by bubba- 5 replies

Horrible unspeakable tragedies have been experienced throughout the Caribbean that marginalize any particular hurricane observations by individuals. However, long-time Floridians did have ideas and criteria that they used to judge hurricanes that may have an effect on their area. "Hurrcun Wisdom" from my Granddad and other similar long-timers in the Palm Beaches, viewed a specific time-frame ( Aug.15-Sept. 15) as the period known for the incredibly vicious hurricanes that moved eastward towards Florida. We now know that these are the powerful Cape Verde's that are born as thunderstorms off the African coast that passed through the Cape Verde Islands. My Granddad and …

Winter solstice 2017
by Tracy- 5 replies

I thought it worth noting that it's the winter solstice in the northern hemisphere today. I like to celebrate the fact that after this, the days get longer even though autumn has come to a close and cold winter has arrived. I'm sure my friends in the southern hemisphere are excited at the arrival of their summer today as well! The good news locally was that we actually got rain in my part of Southern California which was a welcome break after a very dry late autumn which correlated to all the fires. I haven't looked at weather maps to see if Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties were so lucky as to receive some rainfall, but I know it would be a helpful respite in fighti…

The Weather Channel vs Weather Underground App (Tempature Wise)
by PalmTreeDude- 7 replies
- 1.4k views
Out of The Weather Channel (default weather app on my phone) and the Weather Underground App, which one do you prefer? I personally prefer The Weather Channel app because it seems more accurate compared to Weather Underground, for example this morning it said on The Weather Channel app that it was 50 out and on Weather Underground it said it was 42. When I went outside it was for sure 50, it may have even been warmer. But around noon the two apps tempatures even out. For example the pictures below. Weather Underground is the one that is black.

Warm tropical weather
by Tyrone- 5 replies

Well down at 35S on the SW coast of Australia you pray for warmth and summer. We almost always have cool nights even after a hot day. Well yesterday we had a warm and humid 27.4C day and then thunderstorms and heavy rain all night from around 6pm. My weather station bottomed out at 16.9C for a very short time but it was above 20C virtually all night. At 2am it was 21.8C. This morning at 7.30am it's 22.8C dead calm with 74% RH and the sound of more thunder rolling in. Just went for a walk in the garden and everything's damp warm and humid and the palms are just opening leaves everywhere. Happy days. I hope summer is going to be just like this.

Zone 8 in Idaho
by pin38- 16 replies
- 1.3k views
I was doing some looking on the Interactive USDA zone map and saw several blips of zone 8A in Idaho in the mid latitudes of the state near the Oregon border. They're mostly along US-95 and the Snake River, halfway between Boise and Spokane. Two of these blips have towns in them, Riggins and Lucile. Neither town has more than a few hundred people, so I doubt there's too much palm experimenting going on. Just thought this was interesting.

What is the coldest time of the year for you?
by Palm crazy- 5 replies

I thought this map was interesting enough to share… I've alway thought it was interesting that the coldest time on the year on the west coast is in December, but much later on the East coast. My coldest time is mid December after that the days start to warm up but the nights can still be very cold. What is your coldest time of the Year?

Honolulu cool October temps
by CLINODAVE- 1 reply
I posted this in another weather thread some weeks back: "Regarding Hawaii's recent temps, I checked nearby Wunderground stations and other NWS stations close to HNL where I think the main NWS station is located, and none of them showed lows below the 70sF on 24 Oct, when the airport was in the 50s supposedly. To add to the weirdness, Kaneohe observations (windward Oahu) went from 72 at 1:57 a.m. to 55 at 2:57 a.m. and back up to 75 at 3:57. Seems like a short time for such wild swings. I emailed NWS Honolulu to get their take. Last time I noticed a local temp anomaly and contacted them, they told me I was correct and their equip had malfunctioned." I emaile…

Florida Rainy Season 2017
by Palmaceae- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
Wow, what a rainy season we had in Florida, at least here in SW Florida. Here at my house in SW Florida I have recorded 72" of rain since the start of the rainy season which began in June. Technically the rainy season has ended here in Florida but you really can't tell as the rain keeps coming down! I have had almost an inch of rain already today. We had a couple periods of very heavy rain, and of course the 16+" I recieved with Irma, and the 17+" several weeks before Irma with flooding. The year started with the worst drought in a very long time, to excessive rain throughout our 4 month rainy season. Last year at this time, after Matthew the spigot turned off, not …
