Hello! My lifelong quest would be to have rough requirement tables in Wikipedia for a quick lookup for the palm trees to grow, what temperatures it can grow in, what extreme conditions it can grow in, and more difficult - a map representation where that species could potentially grow (with possibly some color scale on how difficult it is for a palm tree to grow there). If you have good resources for such material, especially for the maps, maybe some already exist (I've not found a map yet which shows where Arecaceae grow in the world) please let me know, any information is really helpful!

Flirting with the Monsoon ..and some thoughts on summer 2018
by Silas_Sancona- 1 reply

On another hot Saturday evening, it is interesting to think that at the same time just last week, it was cloudy, humid and only 78F, compared to 95F out atm. That coming after a very good ( and unexpected) downpour earlier in the day, thanks in part to the squeeze play between the remnants of former Hurricane Bud, and an approaching upper level low moving N.E. from northern Baja. While most of the valley ( inc. Phoenix proper ) completely missed out, and thus continue the streak of rainless days since March ( 102+ and counting) we received a healthy .50-.75" which, in other places, might not seem like much.. but is practically un-heard of here, esp. in June. Rain duri…

Cyclone Marcos, Darwin. Northern Territory.
by greysrigging- 2 replies

Back in March 2018 Darwin suffered a direct hit from a small ( Cat 2 ) Tropical Cyclone. Winds peaked at 140klm/h and really only blew for about 3 and half hours. Rain for the event at my place was less than 100mm. Whilst the City was spared from any major structural damage, the vegetation and trees copped a severe beating throughout the city and suburbs with literally thousands of mature trees felled and some suburbs were without power for nearly a week. My garden, which I have nurtured for nigh on 30 years was pretty well trashed.during the event and my bac kyard jungle is no longer a jungle....oh well, luckily plants grow fairly fast here in the Top End.... …

Early Start to the Rainy Season? 1 2
by kinzyjr- 62 replies

There was a significant downpour here yesterday, and weather.com reports 0.37 inches of rain. Some of my potted plants were drenched and it was raining when I got home again today. At least we won't have to deal with as bad a drought as we had last year at this time.

What Type of "Microclimate" Would This Little Lake Island Have?

So the other day at a stop light I snapped a picture of a small island on a lake, the water around it is about 15 feet deep and this is in Virginia on the boarder of zone 7a/7b. I am wondering, if the very middle of this small island would have a solid zone 7b or maybe even a zone 7b/8a climate? It has a lot of canopy to protect from winds and everything, just a thought I had, I am curious to hear what other people say.

Last cool morning for "cool season". Mild winter for South Florida. Ongoing drought by South Florida standards. Heat, oppressive humidity and tropical conditions in store until the end of October. At least the palms will love it. Happy growing.

Is it getting colder in the South?
by NC_Palms- 24 replies

Since I moved down to North Carolina in the early 2000’s I’ve been noticing that each year it’s been getting cooler in the winter. Cold enough to damage and kill our pindos, sabals, washingtonias, and even damage our native dwarf palmetto. What have you experienced with your palms in the Carolinas and Virginia? I am noticing that less and less are surviving each winter.

Snow - Lower Rio Grande Valley, TX
by LF-TX- 2 replies

As many already know, the seemingly impossible just occurred in S. Texas for the 3rd time in recorded history. Snow fell throughout the morning today in and around the Brownsville area, with a 1/4 in accumulation according to the NWS. Even the least expected South Padre Island saw flurries! Surely was neat to have a slight throwback to the ‘04 Christmas snow; and what a shock to us natives who thought it would be a loooooong way until the Valley saw this much white again! Sadly, the party seems to be over, as the sun has emerged over our area and temperatures have raised to the 40s. By Sunday it seems like temperatures will be closer to normal with highs in the 60s/70s an…

Just today, thankfully, I’ve finally been able to get my hands on some fairly priced coconut sprouts online. I came across a certain company that has a small coconut plantation in Broward County FL, and to my surprise were giving 5” coconut sprouts for 5 dollars each, minimum purchase of two sprouts. The shipping was the only downside: 23$ to get them to the RGV! But nonetheless, I realized that I pretty much wasn’t going to find anything cheaper online. And a total of 33$ for two palm sprouts that aren’t very common here wasn’t the end of the world either. So now I’ve got two Gold Malayan cocos on the way! However, taking into consideration that these will be the first c…

The 100th Meridian Shifting East
by AnTonY- 9 replies
In the US, the 100th meridian has traditionally represented the dividing line between the moist east and the arid west. But according to research done by scientists at Columbia University, using data collected since 1980, that line of of longitude may have effectively shifted eastward due to climate change, to a position closer to the 98th meridian. And it may continue to "move east" during the coming years. The map below looks to represent precipitation minus PET. The posted article contains links to the actual research that this conclusion came from. Overall, this can have huge impact on palm growers/gardeners throughout the Eastern US. And certainly, other countr…

Brrr it got cold in Houston(Katy)

Hey Ya’ll I am new here and I am looking for a current status that I could talk about my Queen palms. June 2017 I had five 15’ Queen Palms planted around my pool. (I had 4 there earlier but lost them all to a freeze) In December we knew snow and a freeze was coming so my tree guy wrapped all four of them in burlap...4 layers thick up to the fronds. Well..it froze and it snowed. Then in January it froze again. The fronds are brown and several are sagging because they have broken. I called my tree guy who planted them and he said “We are not going to trim yet. Although they look ugly we need to wait.” Do you think he is correct? I know I’m not jumping in my pool…

Weird weather this winter. This a placeholder for Monday and Tuesday nights in California as a low drops down with really cold air. Today is in the 70s, by tomorrow the temps will be dropping sharply. Average date for last possible frost for my area is Jan 31st, so this is certainly freaky weather. I think it could possibly have some implications on agriculture as well since it is unusual. Currently my winter low so far was a night of 32F. Forecasts say 28 and 29! Oh well. One bonus getting hit so late is it should help with recovery once it warms up again. I didn’t want to have to clean up the bananas after a freeze since they are still up. Other than that, I …
