New coconut with root rap
by Yunder Wækraus- 0 replies

A month ago I purchased a young coconut that had been grown in a grocery bag. It had terrible root wrap, and I had to sever its thicker roots, which had fused with the bag. It looked yellow and sick, but it’s putting out a new frond now. Do you think it’s going to grow out of the root-wrap stage? (I’m also including pics of my other palms, which came with the house.)

Summer Down Under 1 2 3 4

Perth's coldest summer morning on record As the sun rose over Western Australia on the first day of summer, it was feeling more like winter in Perth. The temperature at 5:25am local time was only 6.6ºC, making this the city's coldest morning of summer in 124 years of records. The previous coldest morning of the season was 7.9ºC in December 2007, while Perth's long-term average minimum temperature at this time of year is about 16ºC. In fact, this morning's temperature would even be below-average for the middle of winter in Perth. The unusually cold start to summer was caused by a high pressure ridge that moved over southwestern Austral…

Orlando Area Winters- Recent Trends and History
by Matthew92- 1 follower

This thread will be to discuss Orlando, FL's winter climate. Winters have definitely been trending warmer in recent years in Orlando. Vacationing in the area over the last 20 years I've watched the Araucaria get to South FL height and things like bottle palms, rubber plants, and foxtails appear all over the place. Here's an interesting web page that shows the annual low for each year in Orlando back to 1894. The recent warm trend seems to start around 2004, after which getting to the upper 20's or even below freezing (the last 10 years) has become rare (sans a couple notable outliers). Before this period, it appears that one could generally count on getting to at lea…

Looking at analogs for this Wednesday, yeah it looks like it could be pretty bad. Everywhere from NW Florida to extreme eastern Texas, and north to southern Indiana and southern Illinois is already in a Level 2 Slight Risk. Slight Risks dont happen often in the Day 4-8 outlook time period, and we could be looking at a Level 3 in the Day 4-8 when it updates tomorrow night if trends continue, which is very rare. I only remember seeing a Level 3 risk in the Day 4-8 outlook only a few times in the past few years.

What the hail?
by Hillizard- 1 reply

Strong storm with lightning, thunder, rain and hail passed through interior NorCal this afternoon. Temperature dropped from low 60sF to mid 40sF in a few minutes. Doesn't look like it damaged most of my palms as the hailstones were small. Events like this happen almost every winter here, but once a season is enough!

I believe we might be in a "fake spring" right now, but at the same time i dont. At least over the next 14 days most of the eastern US is in the Above Average side of the scale which is what we all want to see! I have been having highs in the upper 70's with some areas making it up to 80F-83F up this way pretty much all week long. Sunday looks to be the warmest day of them all before a cold front comes through a knocks temps back down, highs subsequently in the upper 60's expected next week. By the later half of next week, we are back into the 70's for highs. Personally at this point i dont see anymore cold blasts occuring, at least ones that cause freezing temperatures o…

How Well Do The Appalachian Mountains Block Cold Air?
by PalmTreeDude- 27 replies

How well do the Appalachian mountains block cold air? Are they simply not tall enough to block as much cold air as the Rockies on the West Coast (areas that share the same latitude as me on the West Coast and that are as far from the ocean as me are zone 9a/9b for the most part)? From this tempature map (I am currently just Southwest of Richmond) it seems like they do a good job. Although this is never something I really paid attention too (much).

March 3, 1980 freeze in Orlando
by Eric in Orlando- 2 followers

Back on March 3, 1980, Orlando had a low of 25F. I'm not sure if this is the latest below freezing temperature ever recorded here but probably the latest hard freeze. It was only below freezing one night and day temperatures rebounded fast, I was 12 years old and just getting interested in plants. I remember damage on things in our yard; crotons and hibiscus froze back part of the way, Dracaena marginata froze to the ground and Schefflera defoliated and died back about a foot, some burn on Dypsis lutescens and a young Archontophoenix alexandrae under tree canopy. In the neighborhood Syagrus romanzoffiana had some burn (these were the more tender forms that were killed la…

Zones 11-13
by ahosey01- 1 follower

Noticed that in Puerto Rico, there are multiple climate zones, ranging from 11-13. Generally speaking, if you make the jump from 8b to 9a, the number of palms that are probably long-term survivors in your area increases significantly. Likewise true with the jump from 9b to 10a. However - I'm curious, is there much advantage in terms of species that are long-term survivors between zones 11 and 12 or 12 and 13?

Freeze Damage Mediterranean(?) Palm
by PalmCat- 7 replies

Hi everyone! Another Texan with palm questions here! We had what was a wonderful tree in our yard - the favorite of one of our cats - but the tree is now struggling. It started turning brown once all the snow melted. It does look like some leaves are still a little green, and not all are sagging, but it has lost a lot of color. Is there any hope? Any advice on what we should do? I removed the most dried leaves but afraid to cut too much off. Any advice is welcome! Best, A Worried Texan

So, I live in Missouri and I’m ready to get out. I can’t stand the cold, and I HATE the snow. I’ve wanted to move away for a long time, and I’m pretty dead set on doing it soon. I originally wanted to move to northern Florida, but I started to lean more towards SE Texas because of the cost of living. I’m a paramedic, and most jobs in Houston start around $60k. The majority of jobs in Florida start around $45k, and the price for homes/rent is generally higher than Texas. This could change, or I could go into nursing and make more money.. but the principle is the same. Florida = Less money and higher rent, Texas =more money and lower rent. With this current freeze, I’m…

Prospects for Commercial Date Palms
by ahosey01- 5 replies
Hey guys, Hoping I can lean on the PT community here for some advice. My wife and I are planning to purchase a small amount of acreage to set up a mom-and-pop commercial date operation. Since dates have been cultivated for literally thousands of years, the literature on them is dense and there is a lot of information to be found. This is still a few years off, but we're in the site selection process now, so we can ballpark the investment and work out plans for funding, startup, etc. Here are the requirements I am aware of: Daytime temps consistently above 90 (preferably 95) during fruiting season. Overnight lows above 65 during fruiting seas…

How far south in Mexico is cold damage ocurring?
by chinandega81- 19 replies
- 1.7k views
I see areas within about 100 miles of the Rio Grande Valley and south of the border with similar temps struggling to hit 30 around noon today. I am guessing tropicals and coconuts and royals will be decimated between just inland from La Pesca all the way to the US-Mexico border. Even reliably warmer places further south, like Aldama and Soto la Marina, are near 40 at midday. Fortunately, it seems like areas this far south did not get below freezing temps or frozen precipitation up until now (and aren't forecasted to). Even Veracruz, at the southwest corner of the Gulf of Mexico will only have chilly highs in the 60s! That is the deep tropics, similar lattitude to Ja…
