Will Cocos nucifera (Coconut) grow in Sydney, Australia? 1 2
by CoconutFreak- 60 replies
- 16.9k views
I was wondering if Cocos nucifera (Coconut) would grow in Sydney, Australia. I live there, and we have a warm temperate climate (Or some people say Humid Subtropical). Usually humid, winters are mildly cool with the coldest temperature ever recorded in the City center being 2 degrees celcius ABOVE freezing (0c). Summers can be very hot with temperatures in the 30s (Celcius) and a record high of about 45 degrees celcius. Usally frost free. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Girls just want........a pressure sprayer
by PalmatierMeg- 4 replies
- 16.9k views
Ok, all palmlovers in FL want/need a pressure sprayer. I am devoting this week to preparing our back lanai, which houses my potted palms, for the upcoming winter. Starting Sunday afternoon I moved all small plants outdoors, along with their groady shelves. After a hot, humid summer of bountiful rain, the lanai's concrete floor was coated with algae, mildew and assorted yuck. I didn't take a before photo because I didn't want to ruin anyone's appetite. Fortunately, we have had no cold nights yet. But soon..... Potted palms outside as seen through lanai screen Only my two largest palms, a lipstick and a dwarf catechu, remained on the lanai. My husband bui…

Dypsis ambositrae yellow foliage
by Tracy- 10 replies
- 16.8k views
I have been growing a couple of Dypsis ambositrae in the ground and despite having similar sun exposure, soil and nutrition, they often seem yellow compared to palms around them. Below is one of the Dypsis ambositrae pictured, with a Dypsis leptocheilos behind it. Ignore the older burned leaf retained on the teddy bear, and you can see the base of the leaves are much greener than the D. ambositrae. My Dypsis heteromorpha in the same soil on the other side of the walkway, and same light is also much greener as shown. There is also a Dypsis cabadae nearby, which is always greener. I feed with Apex Palm Plus 13-5-8 once a quarter, use the same drip irrigation supplement…

Florida vs California Palm trees

There was a forum like this on city data forums, but most people there dont know squat about palms. some said "florida palms arent native" others said "there isnt a palm in florida you wont find in california" and others even said date palms are native to SoCal! I decided to start this topic to get some more educated answers not like "in florida, palms only live on beaches" I personally think florida has more variety than california. north florida has many sabals, washingtonias, dates, and even queen palms. while centeral and south florida have many others such as butias, royals, king palms, coconuts, foxtails and livistonias, while california is almost all washin…

Phoenix Sylvester Palm Problem

hey guys, im really trying to find some answers to why this palm is not look good. i had my palm guy come out and look at it and he said, if it was his he wouldnt do anything to it, it looks fine, but i beg to differ. i told him i thought it was planted to low, he said he could raise it, but said it wouldnt make much difference. anyway, my PH is roughly 6.5ish. soil is crap clay. its always soaking wet and heavy heavy.Ive added several fertalizers and food to the palm with no improvements. also, it is not producing fruit or stalks at all, and my other one is, well to an extent, they just die of as soon has they form. here is a pic. As you can barely see,…

Superthrive 1 2 3

I was looking around the frozen tundra this morning admiring my collection of brown leafed palms and cycads. We have already cut off the leaves of most of the green encephalartos as the leaves were going mushy and treated everything with a good dose of daconil as a preventative. Came in for lunch and on the back of one of the trade magazines was the usual ad for "SUPERTHRIVE" claiming to be able to revive plants from their frozen state. The only time I have used superthrive is the free samples they give away at the trade shows. Has anyone/does anybody use "SUPERTHRIVE" on a regular basis with any good results. Thanks

Lytocaryum: Syagrus insignis vs. S. weddellianum 1 2 3 4

Syagrus insignis vs S. weddelliana Between 1995 and 2010 the species Lytocaryum insigne (now again Syagrus insignis) was treated as synonym for the "correct" term Lytocaryum weddellianum (now Syagrus weddelliana). In this thread I am trying to document the differences between these two species during their first years since germination. Literature discussing the genus Lytocaryum (Noblick & Lorezi 2010) and its transfer to Syagrus (Noblick & Meerow 2015) can be downloaded as pdf: http://www.palms.org/palmsjournal/2010/v54n1p5_17.pdf http://www.researchgate.net/publication/281374491_The_transfer_of_the_genus_Lytocaryum_to_Syagrus (or via IPS) It would be very nice i…

Does anyone have pictures of Licualas? 1 2 3 4

There are so many varieties of palms I'd like to get to know them one genus at a time. I hope you can post pictures of your plants (not taken out of the web because everyone else would most probably have seen those already) if you can add some comments on how you grow them (or how you've killed them) that would be helpful. Since these will be of the same genus it would be easier to relate the various comments on how to grow the plants. If your pictures had had something in it that could show the relative size of the plant that would be great. because most of the time pictures are of plants going solo so you have no idea how big they really are. I you have some …

I know this has been tried by many of you and I hope successfully...in some cases maybe not...either way, please share your experience...I searched the site and didn't get much, so I thought I would just come out and ask...I would like to get some tips on what to expect and tricks to make this work... I have the urge to grow Areca Vestiaria in my yard(laughter now)...I understand it will be a challenge, I have read and been told that it is very difficult to get them to survive through our winter(glimmer of hope)...Quote from another post "I'd say it's a real bummer that we can't grow Areca vestiaria here in CA."...Really, Why Not? I started to acclimate seedlings…

Some of us have had a pleasant surprise in the growth and survival of Parajubaea sunkha here in North Florida. Tank [if I may speak for him] and I would be very interested in ANY other sunkha experience. Personally, its apparent success was quite unexpected. So, how is it growing for the rest of you in this general North Florida and Gulf coast vicinity? Best Wishes, merrill

Almost 20 years ago I escaped the frozen tundra of Michigan and moved into the sauna of NW Orlando. It's hard to describe the abrupt transition, but I was pretty sure that I moved into an oven. Despite the oppressive heat and humidity in the summer, it was far better than spending September-April indoors and never seeing the sun! I lucked out when I moved, as I bought very cheap just before a huge price jump in the Orlando housing market. I found a nice house on about 3/4 acre of land with a great looking canopy of about 40 big oaks and a few pines. What I did *not* luck out on is my ignorance of southern oak trees. I didn't know that they were *not* the typical…

Hello! I have a big old (over 30 yr) palm (I don't know which species exactly) and now it has got spider mites. I have searched for info about how to get rid of spider mites, but my main worry is about what products/methods might be dangerous to the palm. Should I avoid anything when trying to kill the spider mites because of it could harm the palm? Best wishes, Lea.

According to Harri Lorenzis new palm book : Palmeiras do Brasil (Lorenzi/Noblick) the only real Butia capitata grows wild in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais, thousands of kilometers from the Butia odorata and B.catarinensis (in South Brazil). So,are my B.capitata (seeds from USA ) and yours real B.capitatas or a mix of odoratas and catarinenis??? On Lorenzi´s post tour to the Cadeia do Espinhaço we saw this growing near the road:

Coconut Palm too close to house
by Palm Hound- 9 replies

Sorry I don't have a photo. It's too far to travel just to take a picture. Although it would be a good excuse for a vacation. Anyway, my brother asked me, "Do you know if a Coconut palm could wreck the foundation of a house? I have one that is getting big and it is about a foot or two from my house." I don't know if he's just talking about the roots, which I hear are pretty tough or if he's talking about the trunk hitting the house. Could the roots cause damage to a house? Thanks, Dave

Attalea dubia 1 2 3
by buffy- 86 replies

This question is probably directed towards Alberto, but some of you other guys might know. Where exactly can you find the high altitude groupings of Attalea dubia? Eventually, I'll find a good reason to visit, and you better believe I'll be doing some botanizing. So, if I could know exactly where to find the coldest of the cold Attaleas, that would be good to know. I wish someone down there would make the trek up into the highlands to try to find the highest of the high mountain Attalea dubia. I bet there would be a line of people willing to pony up some cash for those. I'm in the front of that line, may I add. I just fell in love with Attaleas when I was in the mount…

When: Thursday June 14th, 2012 at 12 noon Where: Floribunda palm nursery in Hawaiian Acres, Big Island of Hawaii Objective: Buy palms (no surprise there! ) Kim and I arrived a few minutes after 12 noon and were greeted by Jeff and Suchin. Jeff asked "do you want to go for a garden tour first and then buy palms? Or just buy the palms? I have the afternoon available." Hmmm...that decision didn't take long to make! I have been to Floribunda many times over the past 17 years, but I never tire of looking at the palms - in the ground and in the nursery. Always something new and simply seeing the growth of many of these palms is amazing in itself. Right away we stumbled …
