In August of 2017 my wife and I bought our home in Hilo, Hawaii. This thread will attempt to document the creation of our Hilo garden and also serve as a main thread for me to update over the years with progress pictures. Before moving to Hilo, we enjoyed living in Fallbrook, California. I spent 8 years there building our garden from scratch. We had the privilege of having many visitors come to that garden over the years including a meeting of the Southern California Palm Society. We are currently renting that home out and while many palms remain there, several of the prized palms were moved to some amazing Southern California gardens to better ensure their sur…

So I finally got my 20 ft. Foxy Lady and Kentia transplanted. The Foxy Lady had almost 2 months of root pruning before it was moved. I was told that the fronds need to stay all tied up for a couple of months to prevent photosynthesis so the palms would not go into shock and die. Do I really need to wait this long before I am able to let the fronds open up? Your input would be greatly appreciated. J

I have noticed many times living here in southern cal that palms are incorrectly placed in the landscape. the #1 issue I see is that very poor judgement is used with regard to where and how many palms should be planted. (now I understand that for many here the palms and number collected are of more importance with design considerations being a distant second - you may want to consider skipping this thread) for those interested - i present this key drawing: you will notice that the trees "frame" the house. they solidify the house to the surrounding landscape the key here is that the trees (palms in our case ) project in diagonals from the…

Last time I was at South Coast Palms I was floored by how wide the spread was on a couple of Gary Wood's Sabals. I thought it might be interesting to see a bunch of them as a thread here. Photos with people for scale are even better. Any species works - bermudana, riverside, yapa - all the monsters. I'm at work, and will check through my photos and post them when I get home.

It's been a very rainy December this year. Here in Paphos till now we had 278% more than the average rainfall for the month and there is more coming. My palm took a lot of rain the last 3 weeks because is only protected with a plastic naylon from the northern wind. Despite of this the temps were mild and I didn't get less than 10c in my garden. We had days around 19-20 and a couple 22c. The nights were mostly 10-12c with some 13-14c. One thing I noticed is the palm had no issues so far and even the newest spear seems that it keeps growing. I guess we'll have soon more cool nights but the palm will not get any extra covering and see what happens.

Girls just want........a pressure sprayer
by PalmatierMeg- 8 replies

Ok, all palmlovers in FL want/need a pressure sprayer. I am devoting this week to preparing our back lanai, which houses my potted palms, for the upcoming winter. Starting Sunday afternoon I moved all small plants outdoors, along with their groady shelves. After a hot, humid summer of bountiful rain, the lanai's concrete floor was coated with algae, mildew and assorted yuck. I didn't take a before photo because I didn't want to ruin anyone's appetite. Fortunately, we have had no cold nights yet. But soon..... Potted palms outside as seen through lanai screen Only my two largest palms, a lipstick and a dwarf catechu, remained on the lanai. My husband bui…

Liana's backyard in the farm. These are fast growers...they've doubled in size in the last 18 months, since I've seen them for the first time. Still keeping the "windows" but I guess it won't last long at this point, for the next fronds (?)... Beautiful palms aren't they?

Removing boots from queen palm trunk
by CromulentKevin- 9 replies
- 22.4k views
Howdy. I usually wait until the boots are about to fall off by themselves before pulling them off cleanly, usually with almost no force. However, some of my queen palms have boots that have stayed on very low that won't come off with even a forceful pull. The issue is that some of the boots ABOVE the ones that won't come off have already come off by themselves. So it looks really odd to have random stragglers stuck on that should have been gone long ago. I just want things to be at an even level up to the point where they are coming off naturally, not to like skin the tree prematurely. When I've tried forcing them off too much I've torn into the tree a little and I'm sure…

When you pull a spear out 1 2
by LJG- 1 follower

Once of my favorite palms had its main stem's spear stop growing. It started browning and after a few weeks I figured I would test it. This morning I pulled it out. Most the ones I have pulled from other palms were due to the freeze. This was planted in April and was protected from the freeze. But the planting and sun burn put it into shock. So I think I know the answer that the stem will probably die. But I figured I would ask some long time growers if they have seen better success then I would guess at recovery. It has been hit with fungicide weeks earlier when I noticed the slowing. I hit it again today with Subdue. Any positive words of encouragement?

How do you find out the fungus that killed your palm, so you know what to use to treat the others with? Just lost a Mule this week; having it removed - stump and root ball and all. But I want to treat 5 other Mules in the area, and 2 Queens. Read a previous thread about a Sylvester Palm Fungus (and some additional remarks over 2 years) - suggesting many things for the person who posted and what fungicides they already had on hand. I'm looking for a heart / crown treatment and a soil drench. Are there fungicides that do both? Looking to buy something asap and get my remaining palms treated. Any suggestions to help me treat my other palms would be great, thanks!

What temp should I move palms inside?
by MDPalm- 11 replies
- 21.4k views
hi, I am in eastern Maryland and temps are starting to be in the 50's at nights. I have a 8' & 5' Adonidia, a little baby coconut (2'), a 4-5' Foxtail, and a Robellini that are outside (plus some cold hardy palms). Last year I think it was close to or after Thanksgiving before I moved them all in permanently but I don't remember the temps and I didn't have the coconut which I am thinking is the first to need to come in and probably already should? The problem is I am about to start construction on a sunroom so these trees have a winter home (and so I can buy more) but it's going to be a while before it is done. So until then I will have to keep them in the …

Gday all, I’ve read several stories on the forum where people have attempted to grow coconut palms away from their preferred climate range with a variety of results so I thought I would share my experience in growing one in Perth, Western Australia. Further north in our state coconuts grow extremely well and fruit prolifically but here in Perth (32S) it’s a bit too cool for a bit too long over our winter but like everyone else I really wanted one as I’ve spent a lot of time in our states north and love the look of these palms. I read everything I could find in books and online, including here on this forum before I attempted growing one just to see wh…

Mod Edit: I have made this exception before, and placed notice of rare and valuable stolen plants in this forum to assure adequate exposure. This is an extremely disheartening and serious occurrence with many ramifications. Unfortunately it is not that uncommon. And also unfortunately, it was probably someone who is passionate and knows about rare plants, very much like many of us here, just without any respect or morals. If not, it was someone who will be trying to sell them. But either way, this makes it possible that some of you may run across these plants, or a clue that could help Randy recover his plants - or at least help identify the culprit for the benefit of all…

Well, Summer's half over so I thought it would be a good time to post my annual garden photos. This summer has been balmy and humid and most of my palms are in high gear right now and growth should continue through November before most screech to a halt. I'm downloading lots of pics so please be patient. Yours truly and a fat Livistona chinensis front porch area view from front porch Licuala ramsayi and R. regia and small Dictosperma to right

I've seen a few post about the northern ranges of coconuts and when I saw these I figured I'd share. This is Sanford FL, a couple of hundred yards south of Lake Monroe. Looking at google earth they were planted in 2013. They have grown quite a bit since then. street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@28.8115585,-81.2515015,3a,75y,250.93h,78.65t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sviAF9tkw_-Cg7qE4cNqmfg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

Walnut Creek, California, The Dick Douglas Garden 1 2 3

I had the opportunity to visit Dick Douglas a few days back on one of my layovers in San Fransisco. I was limited on time so I got up early in the morning and took the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) 40 minutes north to Walnut Creek. Dick met me at the station at 6:30am and we started the day off with breakfast at one of the local restaurants then headed to his place for a tour. It was early in the morning so the lighting was not the greatest for picture taking, combine that with a bit of fog that rolled through, and my pics did not come out the best, but I think it's hard to get a bad shot of Dick's garden. In this first shot, I was demonstrating to Dick how I shimmied u…

Bismarckia nobilis seeds

Hello, new to the forum and a bit overwelmed. I started collecting seeds from several palms in my area. Attempting to germinate them with fair success (thanks to the info in this forum). I have used the float test for all my seeds to determine viability. But I have a question, is it fool proof for all species? The reason I ask is because I collected about 50 seeds from a Bismarckia nobilis last weekend. I cleaned one seed and tried the foat test. It did not sink. I then started putting the uncleaned seeds in a bucket. Over half floated while the other half sunk. I have yet to clean any other seeds until I get more info.. Is the float test a good indicator f…

Why Paint Trunks White?
by insipidtoast- 14 replies

On a recent trip to Northern Baja, Mexico I noticed the bases of many of the Washingtonia robustas are painted white. This is unheard of in SoCal. Why do they do this? It is also common to see this on the Ficus benjaminas throughout Mexico as well.
