Outrageous cost of palm fertilizer 1 2 3

I was at my local Home Depot recently and had my socks knocked off when I saw the current price of fertilizer. For example: Lesco 13-3-13: $41.31/50# bag. Lesco 8-10-10: $33.81/50# bag. Vigoro 10-10-10: $20.98/40# bag. Rite Green 6-6-6: $11.47/33# bag. These prices are frigging laughable! I told the garden manager that stuff could sit on the pallets and rot before I would pay that price. She confirmed to me many customers were complaining and also not purchasing the fertilizer. Monday I went to a local fertilizer store (Brandt) that caters to agriculture. They have much better prices. Growers Palm Special 12-4-12-2 (mag.) with controlled relea…

Zone 10a | .29 acre Acquired this property not too long ago and have spent a majority of the time updating the fundamentals as well as the interior while deconstructing the landscape here and there. Now it's time to have a little fun with the landscaping... The goal is to really push the limits with design. My style is modern eclectic. Here is a view of the front of the house where there was once a box hedge... I had cut it down to stumps and reshaped the regrowth into circles for the time being. Everything else was lawn.. I had removed some sections and did temporary flower beds underneath the front windows but it is ready for its next phase. I hav…

Pics of my garden Leilani Estates

Hi everyone, I've been a lurker for years, but have started posting because of the great info provided by the site with regard to the recent lava events here in Leilani Estates. Palmtalk has been my #1 source of up-to-date info as little of value is posted by Civil Defense. I'm grateful for the info. I moved to Leilani Estates in 2012 from Long Beach CA. The palms in my garden are anywhere from 5-1/2 years old to just a few months old. If everything goes right, there should be 2 pictures. pic 1 - a lemurophoenix between 2 clinostigma ponapense pic 2 - center palms: a beccariophoenix and a condapanna (oops, this one didn't work...) Mike Arends…

Damage by Palm Roots
by bgl- 18 replies

RLR explained in the FAQ section why palm roots won't damage concrete. Since that's Read Only I'm starting this new thread. I have no experience with palm roots and concrete, but I have plenty of experience with palms roots and asphalt (black top) and thought it might be appropriate to point out that the roots from certain palms will cause considerable heaving in asphalt, which is softer than concrete. Royal Palms, Clinostigmas, Pigafettas and Cocos nucifera planted within 8-10 ft of asphalt will eventually cause considerable buckling in the blacktop. A safe distance is probably at least 12 ft.

Pogobob took me to see this amazing palm, it is its the real colour!! The colour is very strong in this palm. You can see some of it on the inside of the sheaf of an old leaf. Pictures do not do it justice , the actual colour is more vibrant. Has any one seen any other unusual colours on this species crownshaft? hope you enjoy this shared experience regards colin

Anybody grow blue jubaea chilensis? 1 2

I have a couple of 15 gallon blue jubaea chilensis palms, and I was wondering if the blue ones have different cultivation requirements. They are similar to the green ones in appearance but the leaf texture is different and there seems to be more glaucous covering on them. Do they require drier conditions?

On the occasion of the first pinnate leaf of my N°1401 I open a new thread for this only little known species Lytocaryum insigne TOLEDO 1944 (now again Syagrus insignis BECC. 1916, former Cocos insignis MART. 1854 and Glaziova insignis DRUDE 1881) Please post your pics of L insigne here, too! It doesn’t matter if they are in pots, in gardens, or (best of all) in habitat. I begin with my oldest baby N°1401, born 2014-02-14 during the cold winter in Germany, grown up together with nine other siblings, out of which six emigrated into other European countries, so that at my place now are remaining still four plants: N°1401, 1402, 1404, and 1408. Here comes the bigg…

Phoenix sylvestris thorns poisonous?
by phatmiata- 15 replies

So im wondering if i need to worry about the thorns of Phoenix sylvestris ??? I have been poked before, but just lightly. Well somehow i managed to poke the heck outta myself on Friday moving one that was in a bucket off my truck. This one left a really sweet bruise on my forearm and was sore for the rest of the day. ts no longer sore but i have a 2" bruise where the tree left its mark. Just wondering if any of the nursery guys on here know if i need to just chalk it up as a battle wound, or do i need worry about some infection, or poison it may carry, etc etc. I think i will run duct tape around the base (thorns) next time i move these, doh!!

Be Careful Around Canary Island Date Palms
by Joey Powell- 16 replies

So I was out in the yard working yesterday morning, pruning some older fronds off some of my Phoenix palms. As I was working on one of my CIDPs, I got jabbed by a nasty spine in the top of my hand, near my wrist. Now, since then I have been unable to close my hand, and I've been in some pretty serious pain. I would have never thought something small like that would affect my entire hand (muscles/tendons very sore) and forearm. There is actually a name for this condition: Palm Thorn Synovitis. If you are working around these, be careful. And wear eye protection!

What specific parts of Florida would be the most northerly one could reliably find Zone 9b plants, 10a plants and 10b plants. Please include any islands that are accessible by car and might have land for sale. I have often wondered how far down the Gulf Coast I would have to travel to get to areas where palms that I can't grow here might survive. Would Cedar Key be Zone 9b? How about St. George Island up in the Big Bend area? Any photo's of some of these more obscure locations?

In August of 2017 my wife and I bought our home in Hilo, Hawaii. This thread will attempt to document the creation of our Hilo garden and also serve as a main thread for me to update over the years with progress pictures. Before moving to Hilo, we enjoyed living in Fallbrook, California. I spent 8 years there building our garden from scratch. We had the privilege of having many visitors come to that garden over the years including a meeting of the Southern California Palm Society. We are currently renting that home out and while many palms remain there, several of the prized palms were moved to some amazing Southern California gardens to better ensure their sur…

Any tips on avoiding yellowing in winter? It’s been so cold and wet this winter that a lot of palms are getting that unattractive yellow hue. What do you do to mitigate this and when do you apply it?
