Palm ID?
by RichAZ- 2 replies
I have a young palm that was sold to me as Livistona Decora a few years ago but I don’t think that is the case and I’m struggling to properly ID it. Here are some pics and a few observations. 1. While happy, it is a very slow grower. It has barely added height in 5 years. 2. The leaves are typical Livistona in that they’re costapalmate and deeply divided but they’re not especially droopy. 3. The petioles have a yellow margin are armed with small, yellow teeth. 4. No flower or fruit yet to help. What do you think?

I purchased a Yellow coconut palm from Everglades Nursery. The petioles are orange. Should they be yellow as the coconuts them will produce when it matures?

The magic of the rain season (in Okinawa)...
by palmfriend- 3 replies
Hi, I have experienced several rain seasons so far while living on this island (we moved down here 13 years ago) but this is the first time I am recognizing a real impact on my (rainfall) loving palms. I have just posted those on the Okinawa garden spring update tour (7th of April) here on palm talk but I think it is worth to take a second look at them after a few weeks with (sometimes heavy) rain every day. It will be a short trip, but if you are interested, please be invited. First, Neoveitchia brunnea... Two healthy looking leaves, and now... ...a third one almost out of nowhere. The next one - Beccariophoenix …

Palm ID Request

Hello Folks, Well, after two heart stoppages, I'm out of the hospital. But, things that weren't done, before the bus stop to Heaven; didn't get done. So, hoping I may I prevail upon you to confirm - ID these plants. First: Butia? Second: Moroccan Blue Bush--Cham. humilus Cerifera? Third: Surprise emanating from a pot full of seeds (you'll enjoy the pics)-- I'll describe it. A fleshy, three ribbed, cupped downward, across width of sessile leaf. An overlay of reddish on top surface of ribs, ending in a woman's bright red fingernail. Dark brown, smooth, slightly flattened nut, about an inch long & 3/4" wide. Whitish radical. Germinated in…

Palm shipping advice

I want to ship this palmetto. Will it be alright to spray most of the dirt from the roots, wrap it in a moist towel, wrap that with plastic wrap? Should only take a few days to get where it is going. Too heavy with the pot.

Getting sick and having palms to protect?

Hi I was wondering and trying to plan for eventually being temporarily sick in the middle of winter and not being able to protect my palms. I succesfully grow (Sorry writing latin name just too long), Meditteranean 4 feet of trunk, Sabal palmetto full grown, 4 Serenoa repens, 1 pindo 2 feet of trunk. my trachys, minors and needles i m not worried. I have a daughter and son in law 1 hour away and was thinking about training them next year. My wife can’t do it with health issues. My daughter will whine for sure (Darn spoiled brats! 🤣), my son in law would do it for sure but he works a lot and is 1 hour away. Hire and train a landscaper to be on call and use w…

Dypsis lastelliana Highland Form Update
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 reply
This palm cannot take anything below 35F. My upper garden dropped to 31.6F, not even cold enough to really burn bananas or tropical Ti plants right next to it. However, dypsis lastelliana highland form has freeze dried leaves, they're not even frost burned. Spear is healthy and so is part of the new leaf. It's now been put up for adoption for a new home in Southern California, anyone who's got a 10b climate or better can have it. I rate this 10b, if not 11a, and it seems to prefer a cooler Summer climate.

toddler archie maxima

My maxima is moving out of the bay phase and into the toddler phase. Growing pretty fast, opens up a nice new red frond every other month or so. Its in a pretty tough part of my yard, gets high winds and full sun, new fronds have stopped yellowing and no brown tips. I love the shape and look of these, I have another close by that's a little smaller but still a good performer as well. Before, planted in April 2018 After

How much water can these things take? I have 7-8 coccothrinax varieties and they all seem to be able to take more water than advertised. I’m in south Florida so maybe it’s the limestone.

I had a fully green sabal palmetto frond fall off today. They’ve all been in the ground now about 13 months. Does it look like a problem? It’s unclear which one it came from. They’re all fruiting and otherwise look very healthy?

C. Hospita Transplantability?
by Johnny Palmseed- 5 replies
So I have a Hospita that is in a location that is my only possible area for a shed. It is approximately 15-20 years old and is not yet trunking although it would probably be a formidable dig out. It is in the shade of a large royal which would also have to come out. I would imagine the root balls are intermingled extensively. I am ok with losing it but would like to try to save and move it. Does anyone have any experience with something like this?

I had previously planted a Queen palm in this spot only three months ago. It did ok, but was challenging to keep from yellowing out even watering constantly and feeding it a lot. So last night I got an itch and took it out. I was impressed how much it rooted out in that time. It was actually challenging to remove. The main reason I had placed where I did was to provide canopy for my Archontophoenix ‘teracarpa’ since frost is a threat where I am. The rationale was that it would keep pace with the King. About that itch… I had a big overgrown P. sunkha from Patrick Schafer that needed to go in the ground but given some change of design plans I didn’t have the space…

Identification.
by stambecco- 4 replies
Hi there, this is my first post and I'm sorry to start it with a perhaps boring identification question. For a while I've been driving past these small trees and initially thought they may be coconut tress but realise they can't be, due to their northern latitude but to the untrained eye, like mine, they look similar -ish. They are located in a town called Menton, South East France. In this town and ones along the coast there are many plants growing which normally wouldn't survive at this latitude. I've just tried to upload some photos but they are too big so will try to resize them but having looked at "street view" on Google Maps, these are the coordinates s…
