Question about germinating Washingtonia Filifera seeds
by IGrowPalmSeeds- 17 replies
Hello, I have a quick question. Has anyone successfully germinated Filifera seeds in colder temperatures? Most of the sources I've looked at say to keep seeds at about 70 or 80 degrees Fahrenheit. I have this machine that automatically germinates seeds for me but there isn't any temperature control on it. It could be really warm one day and then quite cold the next. I can put hundreds of seeds in there so I'm not entire sure its worth it buying a bulk amount if they aren't going to germinate. Only in the summer months will the seeds be at a constant warm temperature.

Still have terraces to build
by WaianaeCrider- 7 replies

About 20 years ago I started terracing this area working my way up slope. Stopped about 1/2 way there for years and years. Just began working again mixing rocks and cement blocks to terrace. Last week end I got at it again. All those rocks came out of the hill as I dug in. So happy the land "gave" me material to build the terrace wall. Will return tomorrow and try to get more beds ready for my next palm order.

Wild palms of Cattana Wetlands
by Yunder Wækraus- 8 replies
Cattana Wetlands Environmental Park is in the northern suburbs of Cairns. (It’s about 15 minutes south of our house.) It was sugarcane fields and sand pits in the 20th century. The government reclaimed it in an effort to save one of the last large stands of Alexander palms in the area. They restored the surrounding wetland and planted tens of thousands of trees and shrubs. Many of this replanted vegetation is now 30 years old. How many palm species can you spot? (Name them in the comments!)

3 Palms in Balboa Park
by blue240z- 6 replies

On a walk through the palm canyon of balboa park this week I came across some interesting palms that I couldn’t ID. One looks to me like a giant dypsis with very large fronds straight from the ground. The next looks coccothrinaxish with full circular leaves and the last I thought may be a kentiopsis or something similar. It’s planted near a large grove of kings but looks unique. What do you think?

dypsis Dicaryi in Clay and shade?
by Palmfarmer- 9 replies
I am giving up on my clump of dypsis lutescens that are planted in a clay part of the garden. The lutescens has just more or less decelined since i planted it. i just got a Triangle palm (dypsis Dicaryi) and I am wondering if it hates clay as much? I will be changing out a lot of the soil around when planting, but eventually it will hit the native soil anyways. It is also right up to my house faceing northeast so it gets little sunlight except for the summer. input? thanks

Palm Seedling ID
by PalmatierMeg- 5 replies

I was taking photos of a seeding Zamia when I noticed volunteer palm seedlings popping up around its caudex. I pulled the seedlings but I am unable to place what palm they might have come from. Their leaf shape reminded me of a germinating Licuala but I have no Licualas planted in the yard and none of my potted Licualas has yet to flower. On one of the photos you can see one seedling still holding onto a black pea-sized seed. Does anyone recognize the species in its infant form? I will pot them and grow them up for future photos. Mystery Palm Seedling This last photo shows one of the seedlings (far left, circled) in the Zamia pot

I am trying to grow a hedge of Arecas to create a privacy screen. I've got about 25 of them. I'm in Port Saint Luce. My Arecas look like they might have multiple issues or defficiencies. The soil is sandy. South Florida Sandy, which is darker and better than Northwest Florida light colored Sandy it seems to me. I have some gray shriveled up leaves, I don't know if that is what is called Frizzled or not. I have some yellow leaves. I've got yellow leaves with green centers. I've got brown spots. I just broadcast some Lesco Palm fertilizer I got at HD. It is Lesco 8-10-10. I also bought some bags of Mag sulfate that I haven't done anythin…

New Garden rises from the wreckage, Cape Coral, FL

On Memorial Day weekend we finished up the months-long slog of mulching our 0.61 ac property and spreading a second dose of fertilizer on plants that survived Hurricane Ian. To those who abhor dyed mulch I apologize but to keep expenses down we had little choice. Undyed mulch is almost double the money and almost never on sale and we had to budget. Because of covid and health issues we had done little mulching for almost 3 years. We finally have caught up. I did a photo essay of our Garden Lot prior to Hurricane Ian - circa 2019 - so I thought I would bring things up to 2023. We have a lot of empty canopy but also a lot of replacement palms that have big roots/shoes to fi…

Rain before a freeze advice
by AZPalms- 4 replies

Okay, so I’m torn on what to do. Tonight we could hit freezing or below again. But it’s also raining. I’d like to protect a few palms. Do I throw frost cloth on them? I’m thinking it’ll get wet. Wet means weight on fronds etc. I also anticipate frost or ice as a possibility. What would you do?

Dypsis leptocheilos Teddy Bear Palm

Not too sure what’s going on or if I should worry about it. Is this leaf spot a fungus or something? I’ve got these guys inside after a cold snap and heavy wind burnt some of the leaves to a crisp. (I think that’s what caused it.) do you think these little guys are going to throw up new leaves or are then done? Still green on the stem so I think it’s still alive. I’m not giving up on them until I’m sure they are absolutely dead.

What date palm variety is this one?
by Phoenikakias- 2 replies

It is not a common variety in my neck of the woods but I find it extremely decorative. The two trunks belong to two different plants, a male and a female one. Unripe dates are bright yellow and have the common date size .

University of Florida Caryota
by tank- 1 reply

Happened to be at the University today and took a second to see how the palms Kyle planted were doing. Everything that I remembered being there last year was still there and growing quite well. Took a pic of the Caryota "Himalaya" that I donated. Random student in the pic for scale. Shockingly, it is still kicking after three years and growing well. Last time I saw it it was lying flat on the ground after what appeared to be a hit and run. Glad to know that some folks on campus cared enough to right it. Also including a bad picture of the Kerriodoxa and Wallichia that are planted nearby. The Kerriodoxa and Wallichia have been in the ground since Kyle did his first…

I bought a relatively expensive pindo/jelly palm last year, in Cornwall, UK. It was kept in close proximity to hundreds of other palms, in a pot. It had curved leaves because of the closeness of the other palms, which I thought would straighten out when we got it home and in the ground. It didn't straighten out, and it seems to not be growing at all. Everything else in our garden is happy and thriving, but perhaps our most expensive plant is sitting dormant, and possibly deteriorating, and making the place look like a mess! I checked on it this week, and noticed it now has developed some odd spots on the leaves which look like a mold or infestation of some …
