Ganoderma Conks needed for research
by Mike Evans- 8 replies
Boy .... this is like asking for the plage. There is a research scientist for plant health in the Orlando FL area that is looking into finding a way to make palms less susceptible to the Ganoderma fungus. As most people know, this spells a death sentence to palms, and you may not ever be able to grow a palm in the same area where these spores have wrecked havoc. This person is looking for live conks to gather spores for the research. This is very important research to anyone that grows palms. She is located in the Orlando FL area and will come out to take samples. Any one in this area that knows where there are live conks will be greatly appreciated. Be part of t…

1st attempt at creating a hybrid

Just wanted to share a few pictures from my first attempt of hybridizing my Butia with Syagrus Romanzoffiana pollen. No other Butia was flowering during the receptive period and was careful to clean the Butia of all male flowers, including washing multiple days/bagging with pillow case. Was surprised to see how quick the seeds put on size and fruited. I’ve already removed the flesh and checked a few seeds to see if they had an embryo inside, which they did!! Hoping these germinate and grow into some beautiful Mules. One thing is was surprised about was how small some of the seed was.

Copernicia rigida?
by Alberto- 4 replies

Four years ago I bought three seedlings of what they told me were the cuban Copernicia rigida. They are extremely slow growing. Probably they need to be planted out and I will do this in the following spring. Do you think they are the real deal?

It is a slowwww grower. Reminds me of Sabal minor, with pretty much everything happening underground, but bluer. See source was John Bishock, labeled as Hardy Green Bismarckia, lol.

I purchased this palm as A.Maxima. It produced its first inflorescence this year which seemed to have trouble breaking free completely on its own so I helped pull the remaining sheath away. My question is: does this look like it will produce viable seed? Or will it produce duds the first couple times out before it finally gets it right.

On the move

Due to the progress of my MS, recent surgery and chemotherapy, I have to admit that I can no longer manage the big yards here and so I am moving into a place with just a tiny garden area. When I found out that units are going up and the whole place is getting leveled, like any good mother I realised my only option is the put the palms and other stuff up for adoption to a good home. They are too big for me to get out but small enough to re-establish elsewhere. They have survived freezes, floods, droughts and frying hot heat so come and get 'em.

Hello everyone I live in Broward county florida and I've recently acquired a C. Borhidiana. My soil is mostly sand and I was told I may want to amend the surrounding soil with some rock to help with drainage. What would be your recommendations? Thanks, Ben

New Phoenix Sylvestris Questions
by Cayman1- 1 follower

We recently purchased a 7' Phoenix Sylvestris and had it installed in our yard. When we first picked out this palm, it just arrived at the tree lot from the grower and was perfect. It was bright green and the trunk had a nice orange color to it. When they finally installed it several weeks later, some of the frawns were brown but the installer stated they usually lose the bottom row due to stress. Is this true? So the installer told me to do the following... but I am seeing contradicting info on the internet so I would like your opinions on my instructions. 1) Water daily for 90 days 2) Add Melorganite and Palm Food right away 3) After 30 days, the lit…

I've got a palm inside that's fairly beefy to move outside for watering so I've just been using spring or distilled water. Is the lack of leaching going to present a problem if the soil isn't being contaminated with tap water?

On a walkabout in yard this morning and spied this bloom. Remember the old ‘Jiffy Pop’ Popcorn? Can’t help but envisioning that when I look at this bloom. This use to be Wallachia densiflora, I knew they lumped into Arenga, but didn’t realize they changed species also.
