Hello everyone I live in Broward county florida and I've recently acquired a C. Borhidiana. My soil is mostly sand and I was told I may want to amend the surrounding soil with some rock to help with drainage. What would be your recommendations? Thanks, Ben

I planted this Ravenea rivularis almost a year ago...It is not near to the building or any wall so I don't have any issue with the trunk getting fat or it becomes wide or tall... the issue is that I think I plant it where there is not actually ground...I think there is only soil on the big rocks and perhaps in their between spaces... the drainage is also poor but I thought Ravenea rivularis wouldn't care and even like that... I am not sure what will be the sate of this one? will its root grow and spread superficially as there is no dept there? will it get fat and big as other Majestic Palms ? or will it die eventually as the roots wont have any chance to g…

On a walkabout in yard this morning and spied this bloom. Remember the old ‘Jiffy Pop’ Popcorn? Can’t help but envisioning that when I look at this bloom. This use to be Wallachia densiflora, I knew they lumped into Arenga, but didn’t realize they changed species also.

Identifying Ganoderma in coconut palms
by Gecrabill- 6 replies
I have a coconut palm with about 4' of GW. Been in the ground now for over 2 and a half years. We have had a lot of rain lately. Went out today and seems to be about 6 very small mushroom/conchs growing out of the root initiation zone that is exposed. They seemed to have stems on them,I pulled them all up, removed them. I read up about Ganoderma but I only seem to see info about conchs that are quite large and those conchs seem to be connected directly to the palm trunk with no stem. The Palm is overall healthy. No signs of wilting or anything. Can anyone help educate me on early stages of Ganoderma and rest my mind on these things I am seeing? Palm has a ring of cypress …

I am trying to grow a hedge of Arecas to create a privacy screen. I've got about 25 of them. I'm in Port Saint Luce. My Arecas look like they might have multiple issues or defficiencies. The soil is sandy. South Florida Sandy, which is darker and better than Northwest Florida light colored Sandy it seems to me. I have some gray shriveled up leaves, I don't know if that is what is called Frizzled or not. I have some yellow leaves. I've got yellow leaves with green centers. I've got brown spots. I just broadcast some Lesco Palm fertilizer I got at HD. It is Lesco 8-10-10. I also bought some bags of Mag sulfate that I haven't done anythin…

Growing temperature questions
by Rickybobby- 4 replies
So I realize what month it is. My grow room has a west window and artificial lighting the room is heated to between 75 and 77 degrees the question is. Those temps are they enough to bring my cold hardy palms out of dormancy? And start to grow more summer? And if so what is the lowest temp. No sense on Keeping the room too warm if I don’t need too. Humidity is around 50 percent rh a few weeks ago the room was artificially lit but temps consistently were in the 60s thanks everyone

Any chance these seeds will develop?
by Butch- 4 replies

These Foxtail seeds came down a few days ago, I'm assuming the strong winds we had here caused it... I have plenty of foxtail seed from other trees, but this tree is with in 10' of a Veitchia, and I'm thinking, maybe Foxyladys... I have some seedlings from the other foxtails that look like foxyladys, but this tree is much closer to the Veitchia than the others... These look pretty close to fully developed (By size), but not much color change... Do yo think that if I left them as is, and see if the color changed , that they would ripen or or be viable? Thanks, Butch

Roscheria melanochaetes problems
by Logolight- 1 reply

Greetings to everyone from an old friend! Hope all is well with you. It's been a few years since I've been here, but having a few kids tends to take up a lot of your time. However, I have not forgotten about my friends here on PalmTalk. Alright, so I seem to be having an issue with my potted Roscheria. I acquired it during the summer and it thrived well while outside. Now that Winter has arrived here in Jacksonville, FL, I brought it inside the house. It did well for the first few weeks but now the leaves have started to turn brown. It gets plenty of light since it is next to a window, but I've also noticed that the soil has remained damp for the past couple of…
