I met with Danilo from here and he showed me Allan's yard in Palm Desert and his own yard in Coachella! It was a great day to see so many amazing palms that can endure near freezing temperatures in the winter and 120 F in the summer! Despite the temperature extremes, the palms were gorgeous and so well grown! Copernicia macroglossa Attalea sp. Hyphaene thebaica Attalea cohune Click Here for the rest of the photos of palms in the Sonoran Desert of California

These are mine growing in my highland garden. I have a row of three clusters ,with the tallest trunks reaching 25 feet. They have been planted for ten years and have never produced any acai. A few infertile flowers have been produced. This variety is supposed to produce up to 25% more fruit than the standard E.oleracea. Despite no fruit, I still love these very elegant palms. They are a perfect palm for screening or backdrop for other tropical foliage.

OK to trim brown fronds now ?

Hello to All, Hope everyone is doing well. Here's a few pic's of the Sylvester Date Palm after the 15-17 degree freezes in Houston in Jan 2017. The inner crown is coming back and had produced 2-3 good layers. Based on the pic's, it is ok to now cut-off the 80-90% dead/brown leaves/branches or should I still leave them? As discussed previously, we are now in no danger or cooler temps. I would like to also know of a good fertilizing schedule, if applicable, at this time to accommodate the palms new growth? Thank you very much - tstex

The average temp in January is 48F/8.9C and the lowest temp is 29F/-1.7C in whole winter. No frost, but always rains. Archontophoenix did well here, however Roystonea failed.

Commercial Mexican Coconuts

Hello, I tried, unsuccessfully, to search for this topic. Question: In my local Texas supermarket, I see two types of coconuts. This always have the outer husk remove. One is a nearly white, and is smaller----the other is the expected brown, and is larger. So, what varieties am I looking at? And are either, more likely to germinate? Thanks for your consideration. Dypsis rivularis
by KrisKupsch- 3 replies

Hello, maybe this has been spoken of before however I just planted 3 x 300mm Dypsis rivularis into a site that is well drained and fertile however receives 40% direct sun in Summer but less in winter. Has anyone had experience with its sun tolerance ? I know it doesnt require ever wet riparian conditions and can tolerate dry season droughts and also growing in water. In the nursery the leaves bleached in sun, so thats a fairly good indication it likes shade, same as per ones i have seen Clayton York growing. Any help would be great. I assume winter coolness is tolerated too ??

While I was away.....
by JJD- 5 replies

For the last couple years I have been working away from home for periods of a few weeks, to months at a time so I am always excited to head home and see the changes in my garden. It is coming to end of the rainy season in the Philippines, so was expecting some good growth and I was very happy walking the garden but then I spotted my macapuno coconut palm had turned into skeleton of its former self. At first I thought it was grasshoppers but then I noticed something else......and they didn't stop at the macapuno, they also munched on my raphia, carpy, D. album and just about everything else in my garden.

Palms On-Screen

Some scenes featuring palms in seasons 1 (on Maui) and 2 (on Sicily) of the TV series "The White Lotus" were cringe-worthy, at least to me. The Roystonea poolside in Hawai'i looked poorly grown and the Syagrus (?) in Italy on the dock looked dead. You'd think with their production budgets it wouldn't have been a problem for the producers to install some healthier looking palms! I guess they assumed most viewers wouldn't notice (or care). 🤔 Despite this gripe, I love both seasons of the series!

A palm with a waistline.
by Capnrey- 2 replies

Here's a palm *I think it's washingtonia robusta* down in Dana Point Harbor that exhibits a 'waistline' - - anyone know what causes this condition? Was it caused back when the crown was at that height? or - did it happen later in life for some reason - or is it just a once in awhile trait that occurs with W. robusta? Just curious. Again, I'm believing it's a robusta - tell me if I'm wrong though, I'm still learning all this stuff.
