What is the latin name of this here palm?
by insipidtoast- 2 replies

My guess is that it's Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. It's been in this pot for a long time and needs to be planted. We don't have room for it, so we'd like to sell it for a garage sale this weekend. I'm thinking of asking $10 for it. Is that a good price?

Caryotas Gigas blooming twice?

Hello everyone. I've had a few Caryotas and never have I had one that has bloomed twice, until now. Last year one of mine bloomed and we let the seed pod hang there and dry out. We've been a bit lax about taking out the tree itself, and an entire year has gone by and sure as hell, another flowering has occurred. Anyone else see this? The pic I have isn't the best, but you should be able to see the dead brown seed pod hanging down on one side, and the new green one on the other. I'm using imgur because I'm old and can't figure out how to make my pictures small enough to be downloaded to this site. Here's the link. http://imgur.com/GTSQsvM Thanks for any input.

Sun Acclimation

This is my first year moving my palms back outside, I'm not sure how to reacclimate them back into full sun, I know it's not warm enough for my coconut yet, but I know the rest of what I have after the last frost this week, I'd like to get everything outside, I have nothing to really shade them. I can keep them in my screen porch on the edges to let them get hit with afternoon sun but is that enough?

Ganoderma Conks needed for research
by Mike Evans- 8 replies
Boy .... this is like asking for the plage. There is a research scientist for plant health in the Orlando FL area that is looking into finding a way to make palms less susceptible to the Ganoderma fungus. As most people know, this spells a death sentence to palms, and you may not ever be able to grow a palm in the same area where these spores have wrecked havoc. This person is looking for live conks to gather spores for the research. This is very important research to anyone that grows palms. She is located in the Orlando FL area and will come out to take samples. Any one in this area that knows where there are live conks will be greatly appreciated. Be part of t…

While I was away.....
by JJD- 5 replies

For the last couple years I have been working away from home for periods of a few weeks, to months at a time so I am always excited to head home and see the changes in my garden. It is coming to end of the rainy season in the Philippines, so was expecting some good growth and I was very happy walking the garden but then I spotted my macapuno coconut palm had turned into skeleton of its former self. At first I thought it was grasshoppers but then I noticed something else......and they didn't stop at the macapuno, they also munched on my raphia, carpy, D. album and just about everything else in my garden.

I’m going to be installing my mac daddy drip irrigation system next weekend. I’m pretty good at all the technical installation parts, that won’t be an issue. below are the list of trees that I’ll be getting pressure compensated regulators for and dedicating 1 hour of total irrigation to each person week. This will mean that the gallons per hour should be pretty dead on. I’ll use the rain bird fittings as I have heard nothing but good things about their performance and accuracy. below is the list of trees I have and the amount I’ll be giving each per week. Let me know if you think there is too much or too little. R. Regia (x 5) = …

I've dealt with scale on Cycads, but never on a palm! Is this common? I have no Cycads where I now live, but 1 of my Sabal Minors, a Sabal Palmetto and a Silver Saw Palmetto, all in close range of each other, have/had scale! I've been treating with 1 round of coffee grounds so far and several rounds of Malathion. I'm hoping I caught it before it's too late, as I never had much luck with curing my Cycads... it usually came back! I think, out of 3 Cycads, I was able to cure one and the other 2 I eventually dug up and disposed of, but this was at my old place and these palms were never there. I think this came in on Sabal Palmetto that I bought a while back since it has it w…

Dypsis onilahensis

I was not too impressed with this palm for a long time.It just looked like a sickly D.lutescens to me. Now it has received my Most Favored Palm Status.I love its weeping fronds, white trunks and the way it moves in the wind. Several trunks have produced seed but they always seem to abort them before maturity.

Cabadae Caught Clumping
by Kumar- 1 reply
I have a Dypsis cabadae (first photo), which I find a LOT better than its cousin the D. lutescens. About six months ago, it formed a second spear from a leaf node. And last week this is what I found - a complete break. If it were not for the photos, I'd never believe that the two were once so close. Now I hope the red colour stays! (Sometimes I wonder whether the petioles and midrib change colour from red to green or green to red)

Harvested Some Medjool Seeds...Now what?
by HorsesnPalms- 2 replies
I was out for a drink last evening there were the magnificent Madjool palms just hanging out. I ran over thinking "Please let some of them be dropped to the ground!". Sure enough I collected 5 of them. They are in the fruit all yellow, some of the seeds were easily popped out of the exterior fruit. So, this is the first time I have had any of these. Are they okay now to try germinating? Do I need to soak them like you would other seeds? What is the typical germination period for these guys? I plan on going back if these are okay. Plus they have awesome Pina Coladas! Cheers! PS I heard that in order to eat them you must let them sit out in the sun to ripen. Wil…

Freeze Recovery Question
by _Keith- 2 replies
A couple of weeks ago, I trimmed the freeze damaged (completely brown) fronds from most of my palms. On many of these palms, that was just about all of the fronds, nothing but a nub sticking up. Today, even a few with spear pull are shooting up fronds like they are on steroids. I was thinking that this was probably just coincidental, but then I started thinking that with of the fronds trimmed the growing points are recieving direct sun all day. Could this additional hear/light have excellerated the process?
