Bismarck and other survivers.

My newly planted palms had to deal with a direct hit of hurricane Newton two weeks ago. The hundred mph winds, salt and rain wiped out most of my leafy plants. Palms survived. The Bismarck has grown 4 new fronds in a week, one tough plant. Should be a beast soon. Lantania is recovering nicely. Established cocos are unfazed. Gotta love palms.

Foxtail trouble

Hi All, I have been monitoring my yard since the 1/2/08 freeze we had here in Pinellas County. I lost a huge Plumeria that was over 8 yrs old...total loss I am now watching my Foxtails...they are about 4 ft tall..thye were doing well and pushing up spears up until the freeze. The other day i was just tugging on the spears and one popped out and smelled pretty bad...I honestly did think they would make it thru but anyhow poured both Daconil and peroxide down both Fox's bud. Only 1 of 2 pulled so Im not sure about the other?? my question is...are they gone?...I know foxs are pretty resilient but they are still green but not pushing new growth just yet. Should I wai…

Bismarckia tender form recovers from last Winter
by Palmateer- 3 replies

After some pruning of burned leaves, my Bismarckia continues its recovery from last Winter's cold. The stunted earlier leaves are clearly shown, and now the newest leaves are emerging in nearly normal size. This specimen was among the first Bismarckia distributed in the USA, having been mailed to me in bare-root form from Miami's Fairchild Garden way back in 1973. Although growing here for over 35 years, this tall specimen has only recently started producing male flowers. In contrast, the bluer colored Bismarckias being widely distributed nowadays are clearly more cold tolerant and faster growing, and in this area most of those specimens show hardly any damage from las…

How Dypsis cabadae recovers

After we planted this plant in 2012, we did a huge mistake; we planted Heliconia around and forgot to control the growth of it. Only last august we removed the Heliconia and gave some aire and light to the Dypsis Since last august the poor fellow lost the main trunk, but see how the clump will develop other strong trunks!

Bringing Seeds from Hawaii

Hello everybody. I'll be heading to the Big Island in October with my wife for our 10th anniversary and was wondering what the possibilities are or if anyone had any previous experience with bringing seeds or so to the mainland (luggage or Mail). I have read the USPS sheet but it wasn't really clear to me because it said it was OK to mail Seeds but then it also said it was not. So...... really confused about this. Thank you for the help. White sprouts

They weren't actually sprouts, because I dug them out of their cups. I saw white squiggles sticking out. Are those the roots, and should I bury or leave them above the soil?

Baby Palms ID Please
by chinandega81- 18 replies

I bought an African Tulip Tree a year ago at a local South Florida nursery. As soon as I planted it into the ground, little spears emerged. Aparently the soil has seeds in it and they sprouted. They haven't grown much, but they are in shade all day and moist. Can anyone ID these baby palms and tell me what they might be?

Dana Point Linospadix Monostachya (Hooperiana)
by el-blanco- 3 replies

My Linospadix I bought form Louie Hooper about 12 years ago ( I think 12 years). Was a 1 gallon when I got it. Hooperiana obviously does not really apply to the name of this great palm BUT since I got it from this well respected individual I thought I would throw that in there. In the background is my 7'2" surfboard for scale. There is an orchid I attached to the trunk years ago. It is fir my in place and blooms from time to time. Some kind of Trader Joes common orchid.

Palm Trees In Movies

I was recently watching Up In Smoke and decide to look up the current condition of Strawberry's house. Lo and behold, the date palm is still alive and growing, and other palms have been added as well. Has anyone else checked on the status of palms from classic films? The date palm trunk from the film. And 44 years later. I wasn't looking at his neck, man.

"We meet again, Red Palm Weevil... But this time... ... the pleasure will be all mine!" I'm sorry! I'm not normally like this, really.. I love and respect all wildlife, I'm the kind of person who opens windows to let insects out rather than swat them... But with the red palm weevil... It's personal, we share a dark history... too many fallen palms, too many broken hearts... (I've shared some of these sad stories with you here on Palmtalk). When I saw it hovering around my Bismarckia this afternoon, something just snapped inside me... I saw the skewer lying around from the BBQ the other day, and one thing sort of lead t…

Bewildering baronii

There I was, leaning over the rail when the baronii caught my eye. The yellow, the brown/black, the light/dark green, the white, the smokey grey. I know I have been on a posting splurge of late, I hope nobody minds, it's the time of year you see, I get anxious, I get expectant, Spring is nearly here, and the baronii demanded photographic attention, what could I do ? with flash and without (how I saw it)

Insects sucking sap from the flowers
by Phoenikakias- 4 replies
Another insect came to my knowledge, that can be regarded as pest for the palms. It actually seems to feed on palm flowers only by sucking the sap from the buds and/or the rachis of the inflorescence. It is a small insect that can fly quite fast. When landed wings are attached to the body and therefore not apparent. It has a creamy white color. I will try to capture it in a picture tomorrow though difficult because of its tiny size. It prefers inflorescences of small palms such as Chamaedorea, Rhapis and Guihaia. If someone can guess its identity and can bring more information, I would appreciate it.
