    Well today is the big day. 1 year in the ground for my golden Malayan dwarf coconut. What began as a late summer impulsive purchase has turned out to be a great adventure. I am not out of the woods by any means. At this stage it would only take one dip into the low 30's to wipe em out. But still, I am hopeful. ^^2016^^ ^^Originally planted horizontally on native soil.     I am starting this thread so as not to high-jack the Dypsis oropedionis thread. Several days ago, unaware of the D. oropedionis thread currently running, I did some experiments on small D. oropedionis to see how well they could handle the frost. I placed a small seedling on a glass table on my deck in one of the coldest Winter spots in our garden. I also place another on the table under 2 plastic pots. After placing them on the table I realised I needed some sort of control or ways of comparing wether the results of D. oropedionis in frost conditions were good or bad compared to other species I had, so I grabbed a few more seedlings for the frosty table experiment.     Jubaea is a stunning palm that I would love to add to my garden, but it's just too hot and wet down here. I do have a JuButia x Butia that is growing nicely toward flowering. I hope to introduce syagrus R. pollen when the time is right to hopefully produce JuButyagrus (waiting patiently while holding empty fertilizer bag)! I have some massive bonsal queens here that will be the pollen donors. The bonsal queen seeds that I got from Eric Anderson at www.seedcoseeds.com produced very bulky queens with the expanded base similar to those in topic "fat bottom girls". Who has a large Jubutyagrus. I would love to see one. Tim

    I feel like I hardly ever see any pics or posts about these in Florida. Do they not grow well in this climate? I know they do well in CA. They're supposed to be hardier than foxtails, so I was thinking of trying some in my 9b climate. But if they will just look stressed then maybe not.

First of all this is my first time here and wanted to greet everyone, secondly I am just an amateur that started as simply a curious person for palms overall and more specifically coconuts! I have been on Madeira (have a house there and go there 2 or 3 times per year) this summer and took a few pictures of the coconuts located in the marine of Funchal.     Made a mad dash from College Station to central Houston this afternoon to bid farewell to the plants I've been observing for years. Apologies for the lighting/haphazard photos, was in a real rush trying to chase the sun. This is the Houston I've always known (wasn't alive during the 80s). I guess I always took the queen palms for granted, very sad to see them go. Along Main St and Montrose, the medians are all tarped and iirc, they are planted with 'Little John' bottlebrush. The ironic thing is that the surrounding areas are full of emerald green gingers, green bananas, cordylines, kalanchoes, papayas etc...you would never expect it was going to drop to near 10F in a few …

    I wasn't sure how to put it in the title thread, but I wanted to get across that this Dypsis is totally unique and was found and "named" by Mardy D. quite some time ago. Mardy has a couple at his place, a beautiful one in his poolhouse, but stretched and some struggling outside. I feel that while the input from others in CA and beyond is very helpful it does not always apply to us in AZ. I see people say that this or that palm wants full sun, and while that is the case for CA or elsewhere not too many palms can take full AZ sun.     Dear folks i have illustrated the general method that i follow to seeds germination.. First requisite is freshly picked palm seeds from your neighbour's garden,better still from your friends garden socked it well for 3 days,but keep changing the water daily and the water should not be chill.if you are in cold countries then you will need a thermo flask to maintain a luke warm water to assist in waking up those seeds from dormancy_ and on the final day treat the seeds with mild liquid bleech solution for 30 minutes,after which allow the seeds to air dry before putting it in to the baggie bag containing slightly moist damp-off,peat moss or coco-peat. w…

    I want to create some unusual "multiple" palms. Like a Archontophoenix purpurea, with a A. myolensis, and a A. maxima. Or a Chambeyronia macrocarpa, with a C. hookeri, and a C. species Houailou. Will this work? I don't think I've ever seen a multiple Chambeyronia.

    This past weekend the Costa Rica Palm Society (CRPS) held a meeting at Villa Decary on Lake Arenal. The members who came to this meeting stayed at the hotel for the weekend and we all had a lot of fun! The previous owners are long-time palm collectors and it shows when you arrive at the front entrance! The new owners do not know much about palms but they welcomed us to their beautiful property and even joined the CRPS. We arrived late in the afternoon and the lighting was not very good, but you can see that it already looks very palmy. C.renda with flash
