I've been in denial for a while now. My guy friends don't seem to see a problem, but my girl friends -- and my mom -- tell me that I should not buy any more palms until I get everything planted that I've already got... I have good intentions and I make plans to plant things on the weekend, but when the weekend rolls around there are football games to watch, women to date, beer to drink, naps to take, and new cool palms to buy!!! Rather than plant I often repot. Which doesn't really make sense since it takes me just as much time to repot as it does to plant in the ground... Of course you don't have to set up a watering system for plants in pots -- but they don't…

"Not Coir"
by monkeyranch- 1 reply

Any one heard of a new product called "Not Coir" from Vermicrop Inc. in Loomis, CA? Seems like some some kind of timber industry by-product like shredded Incense Cedar or Cypress bark. I also heard a guess of banana waste, dried and shredded. The manufacturer won't disclose what's in it. Regardless, it has excellent aeration, and is a less soggy than coir and doesn't have the drying out/rewetting issues like peat. Seems great for germination medium.

"Other" Palm Sites
by Xerarch- 1 reply

So I was poking around another palm sight today, and after reading a few posts, I thought to myself "Gee these guys are a bunch of dopes" I find the general layout of Palmtalk more inviting and the people on Palmtalk more helpful and expert than "other" sites. Now don't get me wrong, we can all be a bit "dopey" at times too, but it's ok and it's all in fun, I also know that many that post here also post elsewhere. I just wanted to take a minute and thank everyone that keeps this forum clean, friendly, fun, and full of great expertise and subject matter.

"Palms Are the Trees of Life"

While doing some more reading about endangered palms, I came across this older but interesting article from the Smithsonian. Here's one paragraph pertaining to the versatility and usefulness of palms I found entertaining." "There are very few parts of a palm that somebody, somewhere, hasnt found useful. If a latter-day Robinson Crusoe got marooned on an island blessed with a serendipitous mix of palm species, he could nibble on dates while toasting coconut meat over coconut charcoal embers; nestle into a rattan-palm recliner in his palm-post bungalow under a palm-thatch roof while writing a screenplay with palm dye on palm paper; buff his palm-plank surfboard with carnau…

I have the 2000 version, but in looking at it today, I realized that at that date, many of the Dypsis were just being ID'd or were so new that no one really knew their requirements. Is there a more current version out there somewhere?

"PALMS" and Palmtalk
by doranakandawatta- 1 reply

Palmtalk Forum is already a wonderful place where one can share with other passionate and friendly overseas forum friends (everyone is the oversea friend of some other, westwards or eastwards, it depends …) and I am glad I discovered Palmtalk few years ago. BUT "Palms" journal of the IPS makes me tell other forum members that they should join IPS. There are so much to learn, to read (just when one receives the journal and again weeks or months later). Pictures are outstanding like few posts on Palmtalk can be, and informations are both easy to understand for amateurs like me and scientific. I like the spirit of the journal, and dare quote the lines …

So I picked up a Pygmy Date Palm (about 4 feet tall) and the care instructions it came with said, "Palm trees love to have their roots sitting in water, so we recommend using a drip tray to keep the bottom of the rooms from drying out" ... Opinions?

"Plant A Palm" bumper stickers

I saw a bumper sticker on a white car that was white with green lettering that said "PLANT A PALM" It was cool and helped to promote palm love. This is the only photo on the web I could find of the sticker. http://www.flickr.com/photos/soulspin/486099891/ Were these distributed by a local palm society? How do I get my hands on one? Anyone in the forum have one?

"Pure" Washy Filifera
by NBTX11- 8 replies

Does anyone know of a nursery in the greater San Antonio area (or even Austin) where I can get a few small PURE Filiferas 3 to 5 gallon or so. The reason they must be pure, pure, pure filiferas is I will be taking them to my mom's house in North Texas and planting them in her yard. That area is zone 8a at best and sees teens every winter. Winter low there is usually 12-15F or so (-10C). Robustas aren't hardy there, and Hybrids are probably somewhat iffy. She lives in Wichita Falls, about an hour NW of Fort Worth. Most of the big boxes and other nurseries around here sell hybrids or robustas. PURE filiferas are harder to come by, and I don't feel like visiting 10 nu…

"Royal" Protection

Some of you saw the pics I posted a few days ago. Well, winter hit us early last week. We had temps in the low 20s on two different mornings. And now we are expected to have low 20s again for the next three mornings. And wind chill temps are predicted to be in the upper single digits here Monday morning. Okay well I couldn't just let my favorite palm go without protection. My Cuban Royal has been in the ground since February of 2008. This will be it's third winter. Here's a "before" shot (click the pics to enlarge them)... ...then $100 and few hours later... I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do next winter. But this winter, it's all take…

What's the story on this palm? Supposedly larger than your average S. minor, and the fruits certainly appear to be larger. How cold-hardy is this guy? Any thoughts/discussions on whether this may be a separate species? I'd love to try one of these here in 7a.

"Scarred" Christmas Palm Crownshaft
by fernonvernon- 8 replies
The Christmas Plam on the property I've been renting dropped/shed a pair of fronds in pretty quick succession (within a couple of weeks of each other). The second dried-out quite rapidly, and dropped earlier today. The new/underlying shaft's uniformly green except for this odd scar/tear down one section. At the risk of being a nuisance about this sort of thing (i.e. overreacting?)... I'd sincerely appreciate any feedback regarding what this could be/mean from someone whose had some experience w this palm variety. Thanks

"Serious" question about seeds
by metalfan- 15 replies
- 1.1k views
Okay, you all know I am a novice at palms and have said before that I have bad luck with seeds. At the risk that many of you who are very "serious" about palm growing will just blow this off as a frivolous question, let me assure you, it isn't. I am 100% serious, because I'd like to try germinating some palm seeds pretty soon here. I am thinking that perhaps I have had rotten luck with sprouting seeds because maybe I did it the wrong way for palms specifically? In photos I have seen of some of your posts of "seedlings", I have noted on some, that the seed itself is laying ON TOP of the soil. On others, it seems to be planted IN the soil like a regular seed. …

"Shuttlecock" Trachy?
by earthworm73- 7 replies

I have this palm that was labeled Trachycarpus Takil when I bought it a few years ago (I believe the place where I bought it bought it from a whole sale nursery Golden Gate Palms in S.F.?). It is not a Takil and more than likely a Nainital. Anyway this palms has always shown a "shuttlecock" appearance from the first day I got it. I've never seen a TF show this kind of growth. Here is a pic soon after I bought it. As you can see it was shuttlecock then. Here is a pic of it as of today. Keep in mind all of this growth is post "surgery" when I was forced to cut this tree down to within a couple of inches of the soil. It has not been trimmed like this and the plant…

"Silver" Queen Palms survived the Texas freeze

Silver Queen Palm - Syagrus romanzoffiana var. litoralis This cultivar of the Silver Queen Palm is from Argentina, Uruguay, and Southern Brazil Santa Catarina, where it is found at over 1000m (3300 ft.) altitude with a thicker sturdier trunk that supports a compact crown of arching fronds with particularly thick and wide leaflets. It is very cold hardy to 20 Deg. F and is said to survive temperatures of 15 Deg. F undamaged. This palm has been in cultivation in the U.S. for many years now under the name Silver Queen Palm. Reportedly the palm received that name in Florida not because its fronds are silver but because after a hard freeze that killed the more frost tender…
