Today was 'D' day here in Beerwah, no more roses for Michael, no more cloudy days, no more possum invasions, no more flying fox screeches, no more cocos palms...the end is nigh, and nigh is now. Burrawang Mana movies presents "Chainsaw massacre 2010 - Jason sucks Syagrus seeds"

Syagrus Rom. (Queen)

Hey all, I was walking a hospital corridor today and noted a large picture of the hospital that, based on the cars parked in front, had to be from the mid 1920's, at least. Yet lined up along the boulevard in front were 20-25 fairly large Queen palms, probably in the 5-10 year old range. That really suprised me. For some reason, it never occured to me that a plant from another continent would have been around that long ago. Anyone have any idea how long these (or other "common" transplants) have been in cultivation?? Bret

Last year I dug at least 5 variegated queen palms from a residential yard in N. Central Florida. Is this unusual? They endured a very cold winter last year. pics. http://s243.photobucket.com/albums/ff145/chumleyrobert/

Hello everyone again .. This time I am going to ask about the flowering of Syagrus Romanzoffiana and it brings me a doubt. There is some indication or something that shows me when the least I can open the spathe. Lately he's been giving me to photograph and document myself. The question is if there is something that he shows me that he is going to open. Thank you all.

Some pics of huge trunk Syagrus from the mountains here. Its quite a cold place in winter, normal lows of around -4C but I think the record low is around -10C. I believe this is the form in Florida known as silver queen or santa catarina queen which is much more frost resistant. I believe it has a better atribute though of having a lower heat requirement than normal queens.

Forgive me for deciding to share this, but I was watering the palms at home yesterday at sunset and noticed how nice the trunk on my plain old Queen palm was looking in the golden light.

I promised my neighbor I'd ask all of your expert opinions on the plight of her Queen. We've had a few days of very high winds this fall and winter, up to 70mph gusts in certain "wind tunnel" areas, and though I luckily have a lot that sits sheltered from the worst, the house directly across the street takes the worst of it in their front yard. In the most exposed position sits a maturing Queen, 25-30 feet tall, planted since 2002. Recently after a bout of high winds (after the "Great Freeze Event") she walked out front to find her Queen leaning over at about a 20 degree angle. Her husband teathered it back upright, but they wonder if it will re-anchor properly. …

Syagrus romanzoffiana (Queen Palm) penciling
by miamicuse- 5 replies

I have a Syagrus romanzoffiana (Queen ) that is penciling. I can't quite tell whether it's getting better or worse. The trunk is about 25' tall from ground to the tip of the shaft. It's looks sickly and has been penciling for a while, going back 5+ years. I tried palm fertilizers and didn't seem to improve in an appreciable way. I tried watering it more and that didn't seem to make a difference either although it is difficult to water it because it is planted right next to a concrete sidewalk and on a slight slope so water runs pass it. It was subjected to a brackish water flooding in April 2023 where the lower 20" of it's trunk was submerged in this water for ov…

I tried pollen of S.glaucescens,S.schyzophilla and of S. botriophora on my tableland queen.Emasculating, washing the inflorescence, baggin, pollenizing, bagging again.....all this on a big ladder was not easy. The seed set of queen x S.schyzophilla was very very good but only one problem, they refused to germinate. The seed set with S.botriophora also is good and the fruits are near maturity now. The seed set with S.glaucescens was low. I harvested around 40 seeds +- 3 weeks ago and today I found the first eleven germinated. I´m very curious how it will look. Pix of S.glaucescens (posts 18 and 19) growing at the ´´Cadeia do Espinhaço´´ in the state of Minas Gerais near t…

I have 3 Syagrus romanzoffiana- here that have been in the ground about 20 years. I have not changed the irrigation spray heads since I planted. I have no idea where they are getting enough water to grow like this. PalmPedia says "Queen palm is tolerant but prefers enriched sandy soils" Rest assured I don't have any sandy soil in this dried up stream bed. Could be lots of rocks down deep as the stream meandered for the past few thousand years. To me they look healthy, just not to good looking since they take so long to drop dried fronds. The first picture w/me in in 2009, the others today.

Syagrus Romanzoffiana in Zone 8b Montgomery

I've seen numerous photos of Queens that have frozen in north Florida but I saw one for sale and couldn't stop myself from buying one. It's about 10 feet tall and I went ahead and planted it in my backyard. My plan is to wrap Christmas lights around the trunk all winter, to apply freeze protection spray(if that really works), and to wrap the fronds if temps are forecast to go below 20F. I'm just glad it has until at least November to start getting established. Does this seem to risky or could it possibly work? This last winter it easily would have survived, we only dropped to 25F for a few hours but I dread the rare but possible 10-15F cold snap.

I have 5 seedlings that sprouted about July 20th. I've already planted them in pots and they're all sitting in the window recieving outside light but no direct sun light. One of them already has a leaf about 3 inches in length. When should I begin giving them direct sunlight and for how long per day? Thanks.

I'm not a botanist, but I'm giving this palm its obvious name. In front of a strip mall in Sunnyvale, California is a group of about a dozen queens. All of them are normal except one. Whereas the leaves of the typical queen palm are gracefully spreading, in this one the leaves take the opposite approach. These leaves are erect and cling tightly to the trunk. I've never seen this form before. Jack

I realize this is not a common hybrid, but I am looking for any cultural information for this palm. I have no clue what this will grow up to be nor how much hot inland sun it will take. Any freeze information on this yet? I am expecting less hardy than the Queen mother. Need to find a spot in the garden for this.
