Hope this wind helps with opening their spears. They're moving left and right. A notch above swaying. Even had to close the umbrella. It fell twice.

Spear damage

I have a triple spindle in the pot really heavy. It blew over today and one of the palms had a full sized spear starting to open and it got bent and crushed. Should I cut the spear it at its base and remove it? Pretty upset about this not sure how it’s going to set the palm back.

Spear from inside out.
by GottmitAlex- 1 reply

It's a beautiful morning. Looking at the palms I couldn't help but notice their spears. Interestingly from their inside out, they are beautiful. Here are two spears from two cocos. One is the golden Malayan dwarf, the other, from a pacific tall. It is no wonder the golden color contrasting the green leaflets has no comparison. Just gorgeous. uploaded from cell. So the first two pics are of the Pacific tall. The second set is the golden. There is one general shot of the slim garden. Have a great Saturday

Recently I've noticed an odd color and growth with this new spear it still feels hard so thats good but any takes on what's happening here, and is there potential for it to spread to my other coconut palms also gonna include some pics of my spear growth in 22 hours of the new frond and spear of my fiji dwarf which I think is pretty impressive for a palm thats been in the ground only 3 months.

Spear leaf on Sylvester Palm struggling
by Aprllissier- 2 followers

The spear leaf of this one Sylvester Palm out of 6 planted a year ago comes out and then repeatedly falls over and browns before spreading out into a green frond. Has anyone seen this happen before? You may be able to see in this photo the difference from its neighbor and how thinned out it looks by comparison. Curious if I have a watering issue, insect, or disease that needs to be addressed before it spreads if that’s the case.

Spear leaf tip, does it have a name?
by markpeters77- 5 replies
Topic title says it all, but to clarify, I've noticed that many pinnate palms have a small piece of tissue at the very tip of the spear leaf that is typically rounded and eventually is excised and can be pulled away from the apical leaflets (probably blows away outdoors). Sorry I don't have a picture to illustrate. For some reason I was wondering if it has a name, no joy on Google, any thoughts Accidentally posted in IPS forum, please feel free to delete from there Mods.

Spear not opening on A. cunninghamiana
by ruskinPalms- 24 replies

Hello all, Just seeking advice on my A. cunninghamiana. I have not had great luck with these over the years and I am wondering if my last one is on its way out. It pushed a spear like usual but it never opened up. It is pushing another spear too. It has always opened a new spear before pushing a new one out (actually, all my crown shafted palms are that way). Just wondering if there is some sort of fungus or nutrient deficiency going on. There is a lot of competition there in the landscape bed and it is a rather dry corner of my yard. It has been very dry for about a month now so could be water. I did hand water it good the other day but nothing has changed. Here are…

Spear Pull Fungicide vs Cut Back
by Xerarch- 10 replies

So after this past Christmas time freeze, I’ve had a couple spear pulls. One is on a young majesty, no surprise there, had 100% defoliation anyway. But I also just discovered spear pull on two Brahea with 0% frond damage. That’s disappointing especially considering my young queens also have 0% damage but have perfect spears. Anyway I started copper fungicide on the majesty immediately, no sign of any growth so I cut it back to healthy tissue today. As for the Brahea I treated with the fungicide and I’d hate to cut back all those healthy fronds. Problem is I’ve been down this road before. I had a needle palm in West Virginia that spear pulled with 0% frond damag…

spear pull on a transplanted palm
by necturus- 1 reply

I have a few palms I transplanted that subsequently had spear pull. Mixture of mules, JxS, and BxPJ. So far their other leaves are mostly green and look okay. The JxS looks to be putting out a new leaf, thank God. No evidence of new spears from the others. I had a Butia yatay that spear pulled in the ground for no particular reason during the summer time. The other leaves looked perfectly normal for almost a year before they finally gave up the ghost. Never put out another leaf. I am not exactly sure what the problem was, but I have had a few other palms in that area die mysteriously. Sometimes I wonder if I should cut back most of the remaining leaves to expos…

Spear pull on beccariophoenix alfredii 1 2 3

All the beccariophoenix alfredii growing on the hill here made it through the Winter in a splendid fashion, super healthy, all are pushing new growth. However, the large alfredii I planted out in the open at the bottom of the hill as an experiment to expose it to cold has spear pull. Proof to me that this is not a very hardy palm. It was exposed to 26F down there. Bummer!!! Me thinks this might be a USDA 10a palm after all.

Spear pull on Blue European Fan Palm
by Palmfarmer- 5 replies

Hey around 3 months ago i got a blue camerops. it was raining a ton during the period i planted it and we even had a flood. 2 months in or so i gave it a "haircut" because it was blocking some stuff. Lately i have not watered it that much like once a week or so. today i noticed the spears and leafs on one of the trunks had a yellowing. I yanked it slightly and it pulled right out as expected. I poured some Peroxide in there untill it stopped bobbling pretty much and gave it a deep watering. What can the reason for this be? Is underwatering likely to cause spear pull? could cutting of a lot of fronds this early do it? was it a delayed effect of all the …

Spear Pull-Pindo
by carolinapalms- 15 replies

Last year I planted a 7 gal. Pindo. During the cold months several fronds turned brown, as well as, the spear. I thought that when the warm months arrived this palm would shoot out new growth. However, a month ago I tugged at the spear and it pulled on out. It still has three green fronds, but a deep hole where the spear should be. It has been warm here for at least two months. How long should I wait before replacing this palm. Any opinions?

Spear pulled on phoenix roebillini...
by AS in SA- 10 replies
- 1.2k views
I was out in the yard yesterday and noticed that one of our phoenix roebillini's had a brown spear/leaf shooting straight up. I gave the leaf a pull and it came out, leaving no emerging spear. The bottom was slightly soft, but had no odor. This occured on a triple trunk - on the smallest trunk - the other two appear healthy. This phoenix has been in the ground for about a year and a half - watered 2/3 times a week. Should I treat it with fungicide? If so, what kind and where can I get it?Is there any possibility of the other two trunks getting the same problem, and if so, should I then cut off the problem trunk? Thanks for any info/help...

Spear pulled on teddybear palm...
by AS in SA- 1 reply
I was inspecting palms in the yard last week and noticed that the newest spear (it had two coming up) on my teddybear palm was discolored and dried out. I pulled on the spear and it immediately came off in my hand. The larger of the two spears appeared fine - I marked it at the time and it is still growing as of yesterday. I treated the area with hydrogen peroxide (it bubbled up quite a bit), then applied copper. When I checked the palm yesterday I can now see what's left of the spear that pulled out is growing and visible. Fingers crossed.... hopefully tragedy has been averted....

Spear pulled out of no where
by feef706- 12 replies

I was walking around the yard after work today checking things out and when I looked at my guadalupe palm I noticed the new spears looked sort of yellow. Two spears pulled like they werent even attached. The plant has been growing great ever since I planted it in late summer of last year. All the other fronds look fine and it has opened a new leaf since spring. What could have caused this? Should I treat with liquid copper? If so what is the ratio for diluting. Any help would be greatly appreciated... You can see the new leaf that opened in early spring. Here a the spears. The shortest yellower one was actually pretty green on the flip side in the center of it

Maybe also phrased as a hard winter transitioning into a soft spring? Took a walk today, and even though we are having a cool night or two, the warm days have triggered "the change." I was out of town for only 3 days and the transition speed at this time of year is truly amazing. Just about every established palm is already pushing spears inches by the day. I actually pulled two spears that were side by side with a newly emerging spear already. I'll try to add some pictures as the work week slacks tomorrow, but feel free to add your own as you garden transitions from apparent death to exuberant life.

Spear Tips On Most Pinnate Crown Shaft Palms And Some Non-Crown Shaft Ones.

Anyone here know if there’s an actual name for the bit of brittle growth at the top of many pinnate species, particularly ones with crown shafts? And what its purpose might be if there is one. As you can see in my video, these snap off quite easily and fall away on their own too. The palm in the photos is a common volunteer in my garden, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana and I see this spear tip characteristic on lots of my other palm species IMG_3876.mov .

Please forgive me, I haven't been on this forum long, but still long enough to remember various Dypsis discussions that I can no longer find. There were discussions about Dypsis prestoniana, and if I remember correctly a species of Dypsis prestoniana called "Big curly" does the best in southern California. What was the other one called? How can I tell what the one I am growing is? I just have a tiny plant and it is doing ok in full inland sun, so I guess that I can assume that it is "Big Curly"? Or are there other Dypsis prestoniana that also do ok in full inland sun?? And I also remember a certain species of Dypsis lastelliana that supposedly did well in sout…
