Spear Tips On Most Pinnate Crown Shaft Palms And Some Non-Crown Shaft Ones.
by Jim in Los Altos- 1 follower

Anyone here know if there’s an actual name for the bit of brittle growth at the top of many pinnate species, particularly ones with crown shafts? And what its purpose might be if there is one. As you can see in my video, these snap off quite easily and fall away on their own too. The palm in the photos is a common volunteer in my garden, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana and I see this spear tip characteristic on lots of my other palm species IMG_3876.mov .

Please forgive me, I haven't been on this forum long, but still long enough to remember various Dypsis discussions that I can no longer find. There were discussions about Dypsis prestoniana, and if I remember correctly a species of Dypsis prestoniana called "Big curly" does the best in southern California. What was the other one called? How can I tell what the one I am growing is? I just have a tiny plant and it is doing ok in full inland sun, so I guess that I can assume that it is "Big Curly"? Or are there other Dypsis prestoniana that also do ok in full inland sun?? And I also remember a certain species of Dypsis lastelliana that supposedly did well in sout…

Special House...Special Palms
by Ken Johnson- 5 replies

This house is on a very special island that had a fish canning factory on it in the early 1900's. The new owner took advantage of the old building permit to build this. It is VERY secluded on Florida's west coast. I delivered and helped install some Satakentia, Carpoxylon and a "pony tail".

Special palm in Amsterdam?
by Christopher Dillman- 1 follower

Wife and I spent a few days walking around the canals of Amsterdam back in July. Morning walks were most ideal to enjoy some solitude, that is before the summer holiday crowds came crashing in after 11am. Never saw a single palm in Amsterdam, except for this one.. Must have been special, because the retailer would unshackle these and wheel em out in giant pots for outdoor enjoyment. Then wheel them back in and locked up at night. Any identification welcomed. Just found these quite curious and highly unusual in my walks throughout Amsterdam.

I have great news! I'm going to be a father come February. Since I just moved into a new house over the summer and started a garden I got an idea from Stevetoad when he did a father's day thread. He planted a Sabal when his son was born and I was thinking about doing the same thing. I would like to hear some suggestions for a medium sized palm for inland California. I know you guys will have some great ideas! Thanks Steve for the great idea.

Special thread for Jeff Rood, Shon , others...

Well, since I passed final, I can do a bit more yard work which I've been itching to do... Anyway, the gangly, upright frond on my "Dypsis prestoOCWSurley" has bothered me for a while, but until I had more open leaves, I left it alone. So today I did it. The subject. Please note, I have always said I trim when the fronds are "brown and down". I think I will modify that to "brown OR down" Please note the subject is most definitely not down. But it is mostly brown...there's still some green, so I was very hesitant.....

Specialized palm roots - Let's talk!
by Missi- 1 follower

I was reading the section on specialized palm root structures in the book Ornamental Palm Horticulture. In the paragraph on aerial roots they talk about how, in maturity, palms that develop these specialized roots may have no connection to the ground except via the prop roots. It made me think of 2 of my older V. splendida seedlings. Their stems are already at the stage of not having connection with the soil other than by their stilt roots. That development just happened over this part summer. Here are a couple pics (one with brightness edited so we can see the detail)..

Specialty palm nurseries...

Hey Everybody, It's been awhile since I've posted, but I am on vacation in Weston for the week and was wondering if anybody could recommend any retail specialty palm nurseries that are open to the public year-round? I was looking for the kind of place (Like Searle Bros.) where you could find uncommon to rare palms, especially in smaller sizes. Can't wait for your responses -Michael

All, A challenge for me I give to you. I purchased this fried palm as a W. robusta for 10 bucks. http://i118.photobucket.com/albums....986.jpg However, looking at it gives me 2nd thoughts on its parentage, not that I would ever bastardize any palm (except for a queen, perhaps) To me, the trunk does not look right for a W. robusta http://i118.photobucket.com/albums....987.jpg The petioles are not armed to the extent that I normally see. http://i118.photobucket.com/albums....988.jpg http://i118.photobucket.com/albums....989.jpg The fans seems a bit to connected, and this is after being in my truck bed at 55 MPH for an extended time. http://i118.phot…

Species Count
by Really full garden- 19 replies
Someone recently asked me how many palm species I am growing and I really could not give them a factual answer. This afternoon was stormy so this was a perfect rainy day project. I decided that I would include palms that have been planted out for a year or more. I counted Cocos nucifera as one species even though I probably have six cultivars. My total palm species planted out in both gardens count came to 138. 80 species in the beach garden and 120 growing in my highland garden . There are many species that grow in both gardens. I have another 30 or so species in pots that comprise freshly germinated seeds to potted specimens.

Tonight I just ended up there for a dimmer switch for a new light fixture and ended up buying fertilizer and an item labelled "Tropical Foliage" It was marked down to $4.99 so I just couldn't resist... I have seem alot of Siphokentia beguinii var. broadleaf floating around that store lately and think I may have picked up a younger specimen? Can anyone help me to identify what I have purchased? Base Detail

To All The Palm Tree Enthusiast, Long story short...I was out taking a ride on my bike, Usual thing I do for exercise, enjoy the outside, And the most important is spotting Palms! Anyways, I've been riding down the sidewalk a bunch of times and haven't ever noticed this Species of Sabal, Omw home I had stopped back at this Sabal in hopes of finding a few inflorescence to cop some seeds....Well, that was a fail. This palm didn't have any starting, any dead, or anything at all for inflorescence. The trunk from the ground to the heart is no less than 6ft, I'd expect it to have seeds. It being next to a major highway and the time was almost 10pm, I had gotten only 1…

species subspecies and races oh my
by DoomsDave- 5 replies

Howdyall: The comments about the various names relating to Dypsis prestoniana got my pea brain fired up a bit. Given that many of the various Dypsis are highly various, and we love to give them names to tell them apart, or at least try to, what are they really? Races are defined, at least according to Wikipedia, as "distinct genetically divergent populations within the same species with relatively small morphological and genetic differences." Subspecies are "an official biological taxonomy unit subordinate to species." Finally, species are "often defined as a group of organisms capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring." So, for example, i…
