I love this beautiful collection of palms in Costa Mesa, California! I got the chance to wander around the mall in 2014 and then again last weekend! I photographed many of the same palms and realized that many have grown A LOT! One surprise was how much the Allagoptera caudescens, since I always figured them to be snail paced. I added some teasers and then links to the albums: They have amazing majesty palms there: Here's the Allagoptera caudescens Coccothrinax crinita Their infamous avenue of Royals Click here for the 2014 photos Click here for the 2017 photos

I have a buddy who just bought a home in Wrightwood and wants to plant something's that may be unique for that area(palms). I haven't done much research but from what he has told me its that its south facing, for 2-3 months is in the low 30s and is not uncommon to see a few nights in the high 20s. What kid of palms can he grow?

South FL Palm IDs

Can anyone tell me what type of palms are in the below pictures? I found these while on a work trip to Ft. Lauderdale, and kidnapped a few poor seeds and seedlings to bring back to the miserable (relative to South Florida) climate of North Florida. I apologize for the blurry first picture; I was in a hurry as my work associates were in the car waiting for me and didn't quite understand why I was digging around in the dirt in the rain in my coat and tie.

South Florida coconut palms

Hi, everyone. I am very interested in learning more about the range and the varieties of coconut palms (among other palms) that grow successfully in S. Florida. I'm a newbie to this part of the country, and definitely a neophyte when it comes to the myriad of palm species, etc. Today I snapped this photo of a fruiting tree in Davie, FL, at a place where they sell a number of coconut varieties' fruit. Can anyone help me out with the variety shown in this pic? Thanks. Terry aka PompanoBeach

South Florida Nursery?

Palm people: I’m in Fort Lauderdale and wondering if you guys have any recommendations for semi-uncommonish palm shopping. I went to the Searle Brothers’ spring sale last week which was great I’ve been to Jesse Durko’s once last year and was planning on stopping by again now that I have some better ideas. Are there any specific places in the Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach areas that you guys would say I should visit. ....I need some leads! Most of the stuff I have, I found at local nurseries, but they are the kind of places that have lots of 200 of each of the 10 most common palms that are growing great around here, in everyone’s yards. It’s smart …

Hi all, Im planning on driving to South Florida to pick up some palms and I wanted to know if y'all could point me in the direction of some nurseries that would have a good selection of palms within the 3 gallon to smaller size (also places where there wont be only super-tender palms). Im not too familiar with South Florida but I am up for anything as far south as north of Miami. Also they would need to be open on a Saturday, Im thinking about going to the Heathcote Garden Festival to pick up some plants and wanted to do this on the same day. thanks for any info you might be able to give me! South Florida Palm Society - Holiday Party December 3rd, 2018 - Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Last night, the South Florida Palm Society held their annual Holiday Party at Fairchild Gardens. It took place in the Garden House Auditorium, which has just enough space for this eagerly awaited palm-related-event. As far back as I can remember, this has always been one of the main auctions (and parties) for the palm world in S. Florida. The style may have changed over the years, but the allure has always been the same; one never knows what rare species may show up to tempt the palm-crazy attendance. - 7:09PM - My group arrived shortly after seven o'clo…

SFPS - South Florida Palm Society Spring Palm Show & Sale Montgomery Botanical Center March 17th & 18th, 2012 The morning of Saturday, March 17th, an hour or so before opening... - Like many other vendors from many other plant sales before, we arrived before the dawn. When we made it to the booth, Jeff and I had some signs to put up and some minor rearranging to do. When we were finished I took out my camera and starting shooting, starting with a record of the booth layout. I started with the front of the booth and worked my way to the back. This is the right front side... - ... And the left front side. - The vendors were asked to bring …

Just thinking of the '30th Anniversary' of the South Florida Palm Society Fall Sale is a resounding fact, when you think of how many years it has been held. The fall sale was in the Palmetum again this year, with about 16 vendors scattered around the palms and oak trees. Setup for the sale started on Wednesday, with most vendors coming on Thursday and Friday. - Friday: The front of Vendor #57 Jeff Searle's booth filled with about 230 species of palms and cycads. Setup didn't take long so when Jeff and I were finished, I took some photos and we did some 'window' shopping. - The middle of the booth, looking towards the back. - The back of the booth, looki…

This past weekend I was down in Punta Gorda and camped out between a queen and royal palm in my jungle hammock. I felt like I was in paradise. My grandpas place borders the Babcook-Webb Wildlife area northeast of Ft Myers. (my profile pic shows me and my grandpa if you were wondering.) Apparently they dipped to 30 degrees this past January in winter.(said my uncle) I saw the plumerias regrowing leaves and a few tropical gingers with dead leaves. areca palms and coconut palms were all fine. my uncle said his christmas palms - small seedlings had their fronds toasted. (are these more tender than cocos?) Oh and it looks like a part of the land is being lent to me …

I went down to Homestead Thursday night and hit several nurseries on Friday along with the tour of Ken's place. Saturday went to Montgomery & today went to the Searle sale. I also got to meet Andrew (Mandrew968) and his father and toured and hung out at both gardens Saturday after the show and met and got a tour from Ron (Moose) of his yard before I went to Jeff's. I finally got to meet Faith Bishock at Montgomery (and plan on going by her place if I can ever catch her home!). Met the people at Searle's for the first time, too. All wonderful people, all willing to share their knowledge. Oh.......the most important part, what I bought!!!! Too late to take pictures by …

Hello I am new in the talk and I am a fan of palm trees. I brought a coconut from Bali in April. I waited a month to make it germinate and then put outside it in a large pot of 45 cm in may. It has grown well and is currently 45 cm total height with 4 leaves not yet pinnate. These days it's hot (28 degrees c maximum and 20 degrees c minimum). In my opinion the problems will start from late November when the temperature will drop. In your opinion, from any temperature of day and night should I put it inside the house? What rhythm of watering inside? What precautions to take? From any age can I implant it outside in the ground? And what are the chances of success? …

I'm glad he could finally accept my invitation and decided to come for a week vacation in Recife and Sirinhaém with us. He and his wife Nelly arrived this afternoon, all the way from Paraná (3000+ Km to the south) and kindly brought me 2 Tahina seedlings, several Butia eriospatha, Trithrinax campestris, Caryota gigas, Euterpe edulis, Archontophoenix from New Zealand seeds, etc... We are planning on several palm related activities for the week, including some visits to other Palm collections around town and I'll try to post a few pictures here later... Here they are, unpacking my nice souvenirs from the deep South...
