After Fay gave us a good dosing of rain we has these guys by the thousands walking around. This one perched on a coconut frond. This palm was purchased as D. Cabada, I'm starting to doubt that's what it is. Is there such a thing as to many palms in one place, I got carried away down in this corner. Anyone want to guess whats in this mess.

Does anyone know of a good mail order source for 1-5 gallon or so sabal minor varieties? My neighbor has taken an interest in palms, and I MUST support this interest hahaha. We have a few nurseries here but none are labeled what variety and they are sort of "out of season" at the moment. I see mailordernatives has "blue stem dwarf palmettos."

I am already pondering how I can begin rectifying all the damage done to our gardens by Hurricane Ian but for the past 3 weeks I've been hindered by lack of internet. It looks like things are finally back up and running. In our Garden Lot we lost 4 of 6 large Bismarckias while the remaining 2 are badly damaged and may not survive. We also lost both of our Livistona australis and one Livistona decora. These large palms blocked our view of the LCEC electric substation aka Osama bin Laden's FL Vacation Compound. Given the horrific carnage done to those 3 species I am hesitant to replant them. I am convinced that trunking Sabals planted as wind breaks can protect a buil…

Hello everyone - I've been lurking for a while and finally decided to post. I will be starting a palm tree farm/nursery in the Tampa Bay area in Florida. I almost have land secured for both germinating(local to me) + then acreage for when they are larger(~1 hr drive). For context - my career and previous businesses I've owned are all computer based, mostly focusing around marketing/advertising/internet...I've been "longing" lol - for something "in the real world" and finally settled on this as it seems like it will fit life quite well...in terms of a new business, place to put $$$ besides IRA, Savings, etc.. Anyways - long story short, it appears that seeds …

South Africa palms and cycads

Hi all, I'm going to be in South Africa this August and would like to see some palms and cycads in habitat (though maybe the cycad question belongs in the "off-topic" category?🙂). For palms there's of course only one option other than P. reclinata and maybe a bit out-of-the-way to make happen, but any suggestions about best spots to see Jubaeopsis? Cycads seem to be pretty widespread in the eastern half of the country, but any recommendations on particular (and reasonably accessible) national parks/reserves? Thanks!

When I acquired this Pholidostachys sp., I thought it would more or less grow into looking like the P. pulchra I already had. It couldn't look more different, but it's habit is so beautiful and the light lime green color in deep shade makes it even more so. I fertilized the heck out of it for awhile, but it didn't make a bit of difference, it's color has remained constant. There's a shot of P. pulchra, the taller one in the third pic, and a couple of Asterogyne to boot. Totally love South American stuff. Tim

I traded for this palm from Mark Katz from Bent Palm Nursery years ago. He had a name that I forgot so I thought I would give PalmTalkers a look see and see what they think. Any ideas? The leaf is plumose so it is not an Attelae as far as I know. Is it a different genis? It does bloom at this size.

South American Palm Weevel MAJOR NEWS 1 2
by palmaddict- 49 replies

I have not posted in about 10 years. I have a very well established 20 year old palm garden in the Bonita area of San Diego. For the last few years there has been a major infestation of the South American Palm Weevil. The Weevil has destroyed perhaps 85% of the local Phoenix canariensis. The Weevil crossed the border from Tijuana and and has been moving north. It was perhaps naive to think the weevil would only infect one species of palm. I am posting here as I just discovered a Pritchardia that collapsed in the last few days. Performing a dissection on the collapsed part of the palm revealed the presence of weevils. So at this point it is clear that the weevils are cap…

I recently saw this article on the South American Palm Weevil and thought I would share. They are such destructive little pests. Hope they are able to contain them. https://ww2.kqed.org/science/2017/06/20/a-real-alien-invasion-is-coming-to-a-palm-tree-near-you/

On New Years Day our neighborhood has an annual breakfast which happens in front of the house that was the first in our immediate neighborhood to be attacked by the South American Palm Weevil. A second Phoenix canariensis aka Canary Island Date Palm (CIDP) that was infested was removed just a couple of days prior to the breakfast, so needless to say, the weevil was a topic of discussion among some of the neighbors. There are now two more on my street that haven't been removed yet, but are showing the classic flattening of the crown indicative of an infestation of the weevil. So the question that was posed to me by neighbors, is what other palms are susceptible. Wh…

Hello all. As a lover of Southern California and its palm flora I have been extremely sad and concerned to see the invasive South American palm weevil make its way into San Diego County, killing thousands of Canary Island date palms. The potential toll of this loss is massive, as the weevil has the potential to spread far up into California, and it will cost a ridiculous amount to treat and remove palms in affected areas. However, the abundance of Canary Island date palms in San Diego isn't completely a curse when it comes to the weevil. Although it means that they are being killed in droves there, it also means that there is so much food for the weevil that they are spre…

Lot's of trees here in Spring Valley are being decimated. I've been watching this one especially because there was a great horned owl nest up in the top. As the tree collapsed it exposed the nest and you could see the furry babies sitting up top. This morning half the crown completely fell and the owls are no where to be seen. I tried to dig through the rubble to see if I could find them but I found nothing but weevils and cocoons.

South American palm weevil up to Orange County?!
by Alex High- 2 followers

Hello all, I have been following closely the spread of the South American palm weevil as it invades coastal Southern California. Looking on Google Maps, I noticed a nearly 20 mile stretch of undeveloped coastline from Camp Pendleton South in San Diego County to San Clemente in OC. This is just about the maximum one of the weevils is capable of flying, so I was hoping that this stretch of coast, assuming there are no CIDPs there which there definitely may be, would provide a natural barrier, at least temporarily, as the weevil makes its way north. But looking on Google Maps at the northern end of that coast in San Clemente, right near the OC line, I noticed these 2 CI…

South American Palms

Central and South America have a wide variety of palms. From Chamaedoreas to Attaleas and a lot in between. One of my favorites is Iriartea deltoidea. Juvenile palms have large, irregular leaflets. Adults have a nice plumose appearance. Oh yeah, stilt roots are an added bonus. On the down side they are really slow, putting out just a few leaves (3-4?) per year. Will post photos of my seedlings soon, but until then enjoy the mature plants. INFLORESCENCE AND INFRUCTESCENCE Robert

South Carolina Possible Sabal Palmetto Native Range (Expanded)
by PalmTreeDude- 6 replies

So I was driving on I - 95 and I saw some Sabal palmetto's growing in woodland in areas they are not known to be native in. I made this graphic that shows where I saw them growing naturally in woodland, the blue squares are where there native range does not include them or is on the boarder of there native range (and I saw some there). I could not take any pictures because I was driving down the highway and I only got a glimpse of them. They where not on the side of the road, they where out in the woods quite a bit, and they clearly had trunks and where not being pruned. Here is the graphic. The blue line is where I think includes their true native range. What do you all …

South Coast Plaza -- Palm Map
by anaheimpalmguy- 1 follower

I finally found a walking tour map of South Coast Plaza palms, which includes a very detailed map of the unusual palms growing there.. Several years ago this map was rumored to have existed, if you asked the "Concierge" at SCP, but when we did they always said they had never heard of it. The map clearly identifies palm species by numbered locations in reference to the buildings and stores. Most of the palm collection is located to the west of Bear St., which I think was once referred to as the "Crystal Court," but which has now become the home furnishing annex to the mall. There are some also palms to the east of Bear St. in the main part of South Coast Plaza as …
