Some hybrid Chamaedorea seedlings
by MattyB- 15 replies

Hi ya'll. Last year when everyone chipped in to get Dave a new Teddybear, BS and I got the tour of Dave's garden. I managed to come away with about 100 Chamaedorea radicalis hybrid seeds. The female was a Chamaedorea radicalis tree form and the father is unknown. Dave suspects the pollinator to be a group of Chamaedorea radicalis non trunking form nearby but I guess could be any number of things. Here's some pics. What do you guys think? One came up looking a bit different. It looked like a C. tepijilote and upon potting it up it had that long skinny seed that would indicate tepijilote. But I guess Dave dosen't have any fruiting tepijilote so what could…

some ID needed
by fiji jim- 13 replies

Hi All, Once again we have been reorganising the shadehouses and out with the older seedlings to make room for the new borne. Some of these I had identified before and would like to confirm them now that they are older and showing more of their true characteristics. Firstly here is one that since very young has been showing a new bronze leaf for a week or two until the next spear starts to show. Any ideas to any of these identities would be greatly appreciated as most of these were only 1 or 2 successes from many seed.

Some ideas for my new Tropical Paradise 1 2
by Justin- 47 replies

The name is subject to objection from various contributors on Gary's Retirement Thread. I go back on the 29th (landing early on the 30th), and will be there for a week. I'm going to try to plant a bunch of stuff while I'm out there. Because of the short time I'll be there, I'm trying to do most of my planning before I go, based off of the pictures that I took a couple months back. I'd be interested in feedback on my ideas. For the circle in the middle of the driveway: * Colvillea racemosa in center * Etlingera elatior around perimeter * Heliconia psittacorum around perimeter On the southside of driveway: * Adonidia merrillii (…

hello everyone ! In an order i have made before 4 years for palm seeds came and another seed as "gift" , it was labeled as Allagoptera arenaria . I totally forgot that i have it since it germinated before two years , and now has gained some size , but something don't seems right to me , it 's totally green , no light silver either grey . I was also curious about the size and the shape of the seed . One first thought was that might be Jubaea chilensis but now i compare the plant with a Jubaea i have , about three years old , and they haven't any similarity . Sometimes i 'm thinking that it could be Jubaeopsis caffra or not ? here some photos of the seed and the pla…

During my last trips I collected a few seeds of different palms. To identify them I took pics of the Mother trees. I have a guess for some of them but I am not sure. Who could help me? The first I found in the city center of Nairobi/Kenya I guess any Roystonea. What do you think?

Hello everyone, A week ago I had the chance to pay Okinawa's "Soutwest Botanical Garden" a visit. The garden is located north of the city of Naha, close to Kadena city. All in all not more than a relaxed forty minutes ride with the car. The weather was quite good, the moment we opened the doors to get out, it started to rain... However, it stopped from time to time, the sun came out for a few moments, too - so, after all fair conditions. The changing weather conditions made it a bit tricky for the camera - I tried my best. Since my ID skills are still "improvable" please feel free to correct me or help me out when I took a blank. If …

some incredible arborescent Serenoa repens, Saw Palmetto
by Eric in Orlando- 4 replies
These Saw Palmetto, Serenoa repens, are growing in a semi-rural area just west of Altamonte Springs, FL (about 15 miles northwest of Orlando). Urbanization has encroached and destoyed this area in the last 10 years. There are clumps along each side of this private drive entrance. You could see more clumps down the lane. All had strongly upright stemps. I would love to go back and examine the others but the dozens of NO TRESPASSING signs discouraged that.

Monday I went exploring Palm Island, a park in Mt. Dora, FL (NW of Orlando). It is a 10 acre preserve on a peninsula that is on the east bank of Lake Dora. It is moist hammock, swampy land. Lots of awe inspiring Sabal palmetto, many very tall, old specimens. Scene at the parking lot growing in 2-3ft deep water a cathedral of Cabbage Palms, Southern Live Oaks (Quercus virginiana) and Spanish Moss (Tillandsia usenoides)

Some interesting drip irrigation finding for palms
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

I wanted to pass along two really cool findings about drip irrigation as I am re-doing my entire system for my palms. 1) Most websites and irrigation tutorials suggest using higher flow rates for faster draining sandier soils. Some websites even show diagrams that have larger lateral dispersion for faster drip rates. But nothing could be further from the truth! Intuitively, the physics of capillary action suggest that the slower the rate, the more of a lateral distribution there is. I tried it out, and indeed, the lower rates provide a much higher lateral flow rate. I also found a good science research article that measured this more accurately and gor the same resul…

Some interesting palm photos taken recently.

I figured I would add a few photos to share. Most have been taken recently. A nice Old Man if you ask me: Acrocomia (Gastrococcos) crispa in first fruit: Zebra-striping and dichotomous branching on Hyphaene natalensis (coriacea). I thought this overlapping leaflet may be characteristic of Roystonea violacea:

Some Interesting Plant Maps

This cool site (www.plantmaps.com) has some nice maps of where a lot of palms grow. Some are outdated but they do give a general idea. Here is one for Sabal palmetto for example, I don't agree with the part where it shows them not native to the myrtle beach area because I have seen them growing in the woods there with my own eyes, but it does give a good idea. http://www.plantmaps.com/nrm-sabal-palmetto-cabbage-palmetto-native-range-map

Everything looks much better than a few months back - the lack of rain has helped a ton, as things have dried off and weeds haven't been so crazy. First off, Pinanga insignis.

Some Irrigation Questions 1 2

Hey ya'll. I don't know if this belongs in this forum but here goes: I need to figure out how to irrigate my lot which is about 80-90 feet wide and goes down a rather steep slope about 500 feet. I was planning on running a PVC main all the way down along the property line. My water pressure is about 90 psi. What diameter pipe should my main be? Then I was planning on installing those electronic timer activated valves at regular intervals all the way down the hill so I could tap in and plumb stations as I landscape down the hill. How far a run can the low voltage timer wires be run down the hill to the valves and still function? I figure running a lot of wire i…

There are some kind of Phoexix palms growing wild along the north shore of O`ahu. No pictures of fruit but they are small less than an inch long and the flesh never really develops into enough to eat. BTW they don't taste all that good either. Copied pictures from someone's FB page. Any thoughts to what they are?

Some leaf oddities

There never seems to be a dull moment when I am visiting my palms. Here are some interesting facets of some palm leaves from my garden. 1. This developing coconut leaf appears to invite me, like skeletal fingers- 2. Now what are these V-shaped holographic notches on the mature coconut leaves ? See near the midrib - and again very clear in a close-up 3. And one of my bismarckias has lost its silver coating at places - the cause is uncertain - rainfall perhaps ? I hope it has no adverse effect 4. On a lighter note - Is this a variegated roystonea ? No brickbats please ! Please add anything that is you see out-of-the-ordinary …
