Gathered some of my bigger and smaller potted palms around the backyard Queen for a size comparison. This thing is exploding! Bottle Palm and palmetto seedling on the left, Foxtail and palmetto seedling on the right, roebeleniis front and center with the elephant ear clump, and then of course the Queen. Must note the little sunflower behind the Foxtail, for some reason the sunflowers didnt do nearly as well as last year, i got no seeds from this year.

Both of these palms sprouted from seed in the same week, the one on the right is Iriartea deltoidea, the one on the left is Socratea exorrhiza, all of the plants from these batches of seeds were potted up together and growth is the same in all cases, I cant get over the growth difference between such similar palms Anyone have a similar experience ?

I think it's interesting that what most of you call small palms are big compared to the tiny seedlings I plant. I'd love to plant all gallons or larger, but they suffer even in my greenhouse in Virginia's winters. I usually can't find what I want in larger sizes and even if I could, shipping space/weight/cost constraints would be limiting factors. Puerto Rico does not have any specialty palm nurseries that I've found. When it comes down to it, I didn't really know any better and just stuck the little ones in the ground. Amazingly most of them live. I lose some plants of all kinds in my greenhouse, but the ultratropicals all just prefer the tropics. I'm fine growi…

Sorry for my lack of contributions the last few months, between work and trying to get the landscaping done on the yard my free time has been almost nil. I've been palm shopping again. Nothing quite as dramatic (or expensive) as last summer's Jubaea acquisition (they are doing fine by the way), but Phil Bergman, Tad Dyer, Ruud Meeldijk, and Patrick Schafer are all a little richer now. I've been searching around for the skinnest trunking palm, single none clumping but clumping is fine too because I wanna zone push for fun and want something almost as skinny as a bambo or something but not like Areca but solitary, I did google but I couldnt find anything and theirs probably species that won't be named off the top There was one that I think had a skinny trunk but I can't remember what it was, I know some Chamaedorea have pretty skinny trunks but which types are cold hardy or don't mind being indoors in winter?

I planted this Normanbya in Sep'2010. At the time it was, like many other plantees, in 90% shade getting an hour or two of direct sunlight. Here it is today after 3 years, 8 months. It seems healthy enough and has grown to be about 9 feet high at the crownshaft and possibly 12 feet at the spear, with a long stretched out look (leaf internodes are 6-8 inches each). The leaves are showing no signs of being plumose yet but are not showing the yellow deficiency in stripes that used to be there earlier). Is there any reason for worry? There are relatively few photos of normanbya on PT, and I'm very curious to know what to expect in a couple of years ....…

Photo (sorry they are kinda dark, it’s very shady)from friends house, he grew from seed from Fairchild >20 yrs ago. It has two skinny trunks no more than 2 in diameter, but maybe it’s single trunk, (two planted together) also seeds are large for such a skinny tree, larger than any of my Ptycho seeds in my yard. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Here's a pic of my neighbor Bob, hugging a beloved Howea forsteriana. This is a beautiful plant with the droopy H. forsteriana leaves and green trunk. But it's very skinny. Also another thing I've noticed is that the leaf base scars or rings on the trunk are very straight for a Howea. Howeas usually have bulky trunks with wavy rings. Surferjr mentioned in passing about a skinny trunk variety of Howea forsteriana and I was wondering if this is it. It's not stunted or lacking water. It's always been under canopy and well fed and watered. Anyone know of this variety?

I’m trying to think of as many skinny trunked solitary palms for a list that I can pick garden candidates from. I like to think of palms in 4 categories when it comes to trunk diameter. 1. Wispy thin - less than 2” like some chamaedoria species. 2. Skinny trunked - 3-5” like Ptychosperma elegans. 3. Medium sized - 6-10” like Veitchia or Wodyetia 4. What happens when coconut palms are just too tall to cut down the coconuts anymore ? I am approaching that point. I cut a strand down that was on the left side of the tree and you know what ? Those things are heavy. It came crashing down destroying anything in it path, tore off 3 large fan palm fronds and smooshed a hibiscus bush. The strand on the front side of the tree will no doubt if cut come crashing down on a sprinkler head that is on a 3 foot riser below the tree. So the question is..is there anything wrong with just leaving them up there till they fall off naturally ?

I was looking at some photos of Oncosperma Tigillarium (Nibung palm) and I thought it looks a lot like cocos nucifera because many specimens of both species seem to have slanted trunks. That made me wonder which other palm species tend to often have slanted trunks. I find them particularly attractive. Are there any?

Sometimes called Dypsis "slick willy" or Dypsis sp "bef", whichever one you prefer, this palm is a great grower that handles hot weather and frost equally well. My palm has fruited a few times in recent years but never produced viable seeds, not yet anyway. This palm was planted back in 1997 and was very slow for about 10 years. It didn't start to grow well until several other palms planted in close proximity were removed or died. Now it just keeps powering on.

For many years my mother of 83 years came down to visit me about twice a year. She would stay four or five days and she loved to sit on my back patio and read a book with a cup of coffee. About four years ago my father was diagnosed with cancer that has metastasized from his legs to his lungs and elsewhere.
