SILVER AND ICE 1 2

I was walking around in my garden this morning in the chill air, feelilng sorry for myself as I looked at the spot where my Bismarkia grew. It survived for 3 years, but it was not happy with my winters. For two years it would look rather misserable in the spring with tan blotches on the fronds, then recover in warmer weather. This past winter a low of 23F (-5C) and many mornings below freezing did it in. Bismarkia is probably the most spectacular of the silver plams with its size and grace, but it's one I will have to take off my list, but I started thinking, "Is my glass half empty or half full?" I started thinking of the silver palms that will grow for me, and actua…

Silver Bismarck

There are a few large specimens of this growing around town here in Gainesville FL (9A). I want mine to be one of them, But I am wondering....We only had ONE freeze here this winter that went to about 24F. That is a drastic improvement from most winters where we could have 1-3 such events. I have a small specimen of Silver Bismarck in a 3 gallon container that I decided to leave out, unprotected, to see how it would do. It survives, but a couple of the fronds got burned. It just pushed out a brand new frond (pictured) so its basically OK. QUESTION: is there a 'size' that these have to reach to be able to withstand the cold? The ones in town didn;t even get nIpped! No…

I just built a new spa under my bismarckia. It has a spa light that can be set on one of several colors (I like the red) which reflects nicely off the silver fronds at night. The fronds hang out over the tub like big umbrellas. I took the first photo from my third floor deck. Tim

Silver Bismarcks
by metalfan- 25 replies
- 1.5k views
A local place here in Gainesville is offering Silver Bismarcks, really good sized in I believe 10 gal, about 5 ft tall, for $16.99. They came from a So FL nursery as a promotion. I read on Jungle Music that they are hardy to 23-26 if they are "large" specimens. WHat constitutes a 'large' specimen?? I have wanted some of these for a long time. They had them at Lowes earlier, trees taller than me, for about $225-250. I know $16.99 isn;t much of a loss if it bites it but I'd like to know if it really has a chance for the palm's sake.

Silver Bismark new transplant

Hi all, I just joined this chat forum and I'm looking for some advice. About five days ago I had a large 16 foot silver bismark transplanted in my front yard. I purchased this tree from a reputable nursery in town and had them professionally install it. All went fine. The person who helped transplant the tree said to water the bismark for 30 days straight. He said water enough to where the soil is compact but not runny. Whatever that means. Then 2-3 times per week thereafter. They put 2 x4s around the tree and banded them for support. Now the weather in Cape Coral is getting somewhat cold over the Christmas holiday weekend. Lows of 34...highs of 48 degrees. Is it safe to…

Silver Bismark Seed Maturity
by rfdes1- 0 replies

We have a silver Bismark that has seeds that are about the size of a grape. My understanding is that they are considered mature when they are about the size of a plum. Does anyone know how long it takes of the seeds to mature to that size and be ready for germinating? Thanks Jim

Silver bismarkia palm problem

I'm posting the below three photos in hopes that somebody can I.D. what appears to me as some kind of fungal problem/blight on a silver Bismarka noblis palm. The palm doesn't belong to me, but to a home owner I just met today. When he first showed me a partial frond from a distance I thought it might be palm leaf skeletonizer (and some of the damage could be that, as it appears in the first photo below up at the top right leaf segments). But on closer inspection of the frond segment it appears to be a fungal problem. The leaf tissue has dark, brownish/blackish necrotic areas. The home owner did say the problem started last year, which indicated to me this problem …

Silver Bismarkia?
by doranakandawatta- 7 replies

Palmtalk tropical members must know, Can someone tell me? Do Silver leaves Bismarkia palms keep the color when mature or is it only a juvenile state? When I saw the most mature Bismarkia in Singapore, I saw green leaves; I got some seeds on the floor; they do blue-silver seedlings! Here some of our Bismarkia grove in Doranakanda: Here seedlings photographed in august 2012, seeds collected in december 2011.

Silver Date is sick? Help?
by phatmiata- 4 replies

Okay so I planted these Phoenix sylvestris over at my Mother In-Laws house a few years ago, they all seemed to do well. The soil there is orange clay however in the areas I planted the trees I mixed the soil with some good soil to help them out. Last year I added some irrigation to them and they REALLY took off in growth, nice healthy greens now. This year I went to my in-laws house and noticed that one out of at least the 10 I have planted looks like its on its death bed. All the others around it look wonderful, except this one? Is this bugs or palm disease? Should I try to save this tree or is it too far gone? Larger Original Photo is here http://farm8…

Silver date palm planting
by palmdudetx- 19 replies

This is just a small experiment I did when planting a couple of Phoenix Sylvestris, they were planted late spring of 2006 as small juveniles. Both were the same size at planting, one in a berm and the other not elevated. The berm soil was made up of soil exactly the same as the one not in the berm. A yard stick is in front of both trees well, the last photo did not get rotated, will correct, sorry.

Silver Dates planted together

Hello, I recently ordered ten Silver Date palms and they are all about a foot tall. However I'm waiting for ten 1-gallon nursery pots to come in the mail next week so I went ahead and planted them all in one 3-gallon pot. Will this be okay for a few days or is it very important that I separate them immediately?

Silver Euro Palm

It looks like 'cerifera' looks in pictures. I have never seen the real thing. But you can take your thumb and rub the silver right off of the leaves quite easily to reveal and plain green leaf. Is this 'cerifera' or something else? Sorry, no pics.

This was posted by one of the palm-based facebook pages that I follow. I know that some of you follow the same pages (and commented on the post), but I wanted to share the post here for more people to see. These pictures were taken in Cuba of a Silver form of Acoelorrhaphe wrightii growing there in habitat. I, personally, would love to see this variety make it to cultivation in Florida. silver fronds

It seems that while they grow, Bismarckia is now meeting Dypsis decaryi. I think beginners like I have been (before Palmtalk) don't realize how wide the Bismarckia crown can be! Anyway these are pics I received this morning and I really look forward to being there again soon. (end of July)
