Should I bother trying to separate these king palms?
by Fresnotropics- 8 replies

I’d like to split this in half or even in thirds, but I worry I’ll be doing more harm than good. I know palm roots are resilient, but would separating add undue stress that would ultimately result in a struggling palm? In interior ca I don’t quite have the ideal climate, so they’ll already be braving hotter than preferred summers. thanks for any advice!

Should I Buy This 15 Gal. Green Malayan Dwarf Coconut Palm?
by Mr. Coconut Palm- 26 replies

Hi Everyone, A local palm nursery is willing to sell me their last Green Malayan Dwarf Coconut Palm (it's the only coconut palm they have now) for $140 (the regular price is $189). It is in a 15 gal. pot, is about 10ft. tall in overall height, and has about 2ft. of woody trunk. It is really stunted for its age and has been in the pot too long, and probably should have been planted in the ground 6 months to a year ago, it has some penciling of the top of the trunk just below the crown, and the whole top part of the root ball has been exposed for some time now. The crown looks decent and has a new leaf opening as well as a new spear coming up. The size and age it i…

Should I cut down my A.C. Illawarra?
by enigma99- 15 replies

I have a palm that is planted in the full sun (Wish I would have known that the Illawarra was so sensitive as the other Kings are doing fine), I've had it in the ground since 2010 and hasn't grown a lot although looks healthy. Finally has a 7-8ft spear and looks like it is ready to take off but... It got burnt badly this week. Real bad, it looks like it just got hit with 25 degrees FF. We hit 111 degrees about a month ago and did some damage and now this heatwave just finished it off. I feel so sorry for it but thinking about putting in another Foxtail (like what is next to it and has been cruising for a couple years) or just getting a large big box store King. I feel…

Should I cut down this Foxtail ?

About 3-4 yrs ago I dug up a bunch of Foxtails from a nursery closing, they where bunch of them growing in ground. Got great deal on them. I Dug some pretty big ones. They all are doing well with the exception of 1. Just didn’t get a big rootball on this one. However I planted it thinking it will grow out if it. However it seems to have Penciled and the new fronds Havnt opened and seems stagnet. My dad loves it and hates seeing me cut down palms. I try to tell him that I have plenty of them and the spot will be taken over by better palm. And even though I’m killing it, will put it in greenery bin and will turn into mulch which will be used for energy for so…

Should I dig it up?

A week ago, I planted a new Butia x Parajubaea x Syagrus hybrid which had arrived by mail bare-rooted with peat moss around the roots. I did not remove the peat most when I planted it and now I am wondering if that was a mistake. Should I dig it up to remove the peat moss? I don't want to disturb the roots more than I already have because there was a bit of an accident during the planting. Will the peat moss rot the roots? If so, I will dig it up all over again and remove it. I know that peat moss holds moisture, but it has been raining here almost every day anyway. I look forward to your advice, PalmTalkers. Thank you.

2 years ago a trachyarpus nova 25cm trunk was planted in my mothers back yard, since then ithas hardly grown it must of put out 1 leaf in a 2 year period and this nova supposed to be way faster than my fortunei which is romping away, but the nova looks like its struggling to put out leaves, its planted in bone dry clay with lots of bushes and trees around it,watered alot it dries up quick and is in deep shade,i think other plants taking nutrients and deep shade stunting growth, should i replant in the sunny spot with no bushes around with manure in planting hole,

Looking at the forecast for the next 7 days, we only have one night forecasted below 40F and that is tonight, by Thursday night we are having lows in the 50's, and by the end of the week we are having lows in the 55-60F range. Looking at models for the next 16 days, it doesnt appear that we will have many more nights below 40F (1-3 nights), so far none of these nights appear to have much potential for us to fall below freezing. My Queens have been slowly growing throughout the winter, but im beginning to notice a little uptick in growth lately, even before the 24F night. I personally dont think winter is over yet, but would it be a good idea to fertilize around March 1st?…

Should I go with a coconut?

I'm a property manager and I've got the oportunity to plant a nice palm tree at a commercial building. I moved to Pinellas County Florida this year and I'm still renting, so I don't have a place to plant anything of my own YET! This will change early next year. What I basically wanted to know is how safe is it really to plant cocos nucifera in Pinellas County? I see them all over here... some are healthy others are dead or on their way. What about LY? Is it here? Will it be here later? If it was my money I would plant it anyway because I love coconut palms, but it's not so I don't want to waste someone elses. The site is in north st pete around 1/2-1 mile…

Should I move a recently planted Carpoxlyon?
by ChrisBroward- 2 replies
https://imgur.com/a/IiqZ62u Photo link above. Hello all, I recently(October) planted a 5-6 foot Carpoxlyon in a spot that is way too sunny. I was wondering if I should move it to a shadier spot and if so when? Now, or later in the year during the rainy season. Or maybe I should just leave it alone. I am in SE Florida. The palm fronds don't look great but it has been pushing up a new spear. However that spear has recently started to look pretty bad. The base of the new spear is brown and yellow with a large crack in it. Please let me know if I can provide additional photos or information. Thank you. Chris

Should I move it.

Hi All. I planted this Ravenea julietiae spring 2016 as a one gallon. I was looking for a palm with more upright fronds. The neighbor behind this block wall has a bad habit of trimming anything that hangs over. Recently I've had 2 people suggest I move it due to it getting to large for this space. I'm starting to wonder about it. So I decided to see if any one has a large one that can share an opinion. I really don't want to move it but I will if need be. The planter is 3 ft 4 inches in depth. I welcome any and all input.. THANKS.

Should I Plant It?
by PalmTreeDude- 5 replies

So I wanted to plant this Sabal palmetto that just came out out of the soil in the pot 3 weeks ago. I found the seed for it in the sand in Hilton Head Island, S.C. I originally thought it was just a seed but when I picked it up a little root was sticking out if it. So I potted it up, in a plastic pot. And went to VA. Now, it has emerged from the soil. Should I Plant It now in a sheltered area of my garden? I heard they do better when planted (not transplanted) at this size and once they have some time (which we still have here) to get the roots settled into the ground they can be quite cold hardy. What do you think, should I Plant It in a sheltered garden here in zone 7a/…
