Sharing for knowledge of cold hardiness between Sylvester, Alfreddii, Royal zone 9b

Zone 9b north of ormond beach, about 3 miles inland. I did not prune my Sylvester or alfreddii at all since winter. The royal had some of the dead trimmed off, new spear is super green and healthy but I’m putting this out there to share context on the cold hardiness of these palms. None of these 3 were protected and experienced maybe a low of 28/29 and under 32 for approximately 3 hours in February. Disclaimer the royal was planted from a field grown specimen about 3 weeks prior to the cold temps so that probably didn’t help it.

Sharing my D Lutescens from AZ
by MKIVRYAN- 12 replies

I know Dypsis Lutescens is pretty easy to grow for most of you on here any many may look at it as a weed but its a challange here in Phoenix AZ. Mine is really liking its spot and has been pushing about a half inch a day for the past 2-3 month. Its in morning only sun and gets water every other day. I have it in a 15G fabric pot and come december I will lift it out of the ground and put it in the green house to keep it looking top notch over the winter.

I thought this would be a great place to share and document the growth of my cool weather palm garden on the northeast side of the Big Island of Hawaii. I am located at about 2400' and get about 60-80' of annual rainfall. Summer weather is highs of 80-85 and lows of 65ish. Winter weather is highs of 75-80 and lows about 55-50 but I did see a night at 45 about a month ago. I'm a bit colder than I was hoping and that may limit some of the palms I can grow but I do have amazing deep soil that I'm not use to coming from Phoenix AZ and then Kona. I can dig 3' down in 5 minutes and not hit a rock and only need a shovel to do so. I have been collecting palms for the past 2…

Shaving Canary Island date palms???

As I was leaving the California Nursery Historical Park (Fremont CA) I was shocked to see that the 147-year-old CIDPs were scraped/shaved all up and down the trunk. I'm used to seeing people pineapple them, but usually they leave the lower section with the beautiful leaf scars alone. Some of the trunks look like planed carrots, not round like they were. Is this ok to do this to palms? It seems like the people who did this don't know the first thing about palm structure. Have they created new places for the trees to become diseased? It seems like a really expensive thing to do if there is no reason to do this, especially if you are endangering t…

hey guys, this weds im going to put down a bunch of mulch (big thanks to MattyB for helping me out). ive heard and read about sheet mulching. thats where you lay down cardboard first them mulch on top of it. my front yard has a huge problem with dwaft bermuda grass getting into my planting beds. from what i read it seems like this will solve the problem. my question is has anyone on here done this before? does it work? is there any reason why i should not do this? any info would be great.

Shipping addresses mixed up
by Gbarce- 0 replies

About a month ago I received a package of plants from a site that I ordered from. But when I opened it up it wasn't the plants that I ordered. When I checked the invoice it turned out to be teh order of somebody in Brazil. I immediately e mailed the site about the mix up and told them the person's name, actually paid for plants that I didn't order but got anyway etc.. basically fixed the situation from my side. They also offered to resend me the items in my order that they could (some items were sold out) and that was well and good. About a week ago I got a e mail from a guy in brazil-turns out that it was somebody from this forum as well (i don't have permision…

Shipping larger palms from Fl...
by STEVE IN SO CAL- 20 replies

How would one get larger plants(24" box) from Fl to Ca, whilst doing it legally? I was thinking of getting some people together and buying some plants..hopefully some of you socals would be interested in splitting shipping costs. I would be interested in stuff that takes forever to get going here...Copernicias, Psuedophoenix, etc. Also, can some of you Fl people give an idea on prices for palms this size? Assuming they would need to be shipped from a certified nursery?

Shipping palms from Thailand - how should they pack them?
by Juan-Carlos- 10 replies

Hey everyone!! So I am getting a few seedlings from Thailand - I got two 12" seedlings a while back and they arrived in poor condition, the leaves where bent on one of them and the leaves where already drying in the box on both Those didn't make it. The shipper had shipped bare root, the roots where covered in Hormone and water soaked cotton, the small "root ball" wrapped in plastic. The leaves where not covered with anything and it was in a flimsy box. I suggested he ship in sturdier box this time, and that he maybe wrap the palms with paper. I also sugested he use foam or some other packing material to cussion the seedlings inside the box. How would y…

Shipping palms in winter?
by Frond-friend42- 1 reply

I live in Salt Lake where temps at night are into 30s and 40s sometimes lower. I'm thinking that shipping out from here might kill or severely damage tropical species en route. Anyone have experiences to confirm or refute? Thanks, Ben
