Here are some pictures of Serenoa repens in Venice, Florida. Most Floridians are familiar with these native palms, but I was impressed with the amount of trunk. I’ve seen natural groves of these palms in Alabama and Florida, but never up close. How old are these with trunks so long? Look at the main branch with a trunk coming off to the right and another small one starting at top. Here's a close-up of the new branch. There were hundreds of these. Kathryn

My Serenoa repens has been growing at a fairly quick pace this year and has had a couple firsts. It flowered for the first time and also appears to be dividing. Is it normal for this palm? If so, does anyone have any pics of a fully trunking division? You can just see the new shoots coming out between leaf bases Matt

Here is a picture from a South Venice garden of Serenoa repens trimmed up from habitat. You can see that it easily towers over my 5'10 figure, and the trunk must be 15' long. These things weave all over the place in areas still uncleared for development.

I was very surprised to hear from my friend's father that he was using a medicine synthesised (probably mispelled, sorry) from a palm. He showed me Saw palmetto imported pills (I guess from the fruits) and he claims it to be very beneficial for his symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. He said that it's been proved to be effective in shrinking the prostate, thus reducing the symptoms, and also that they are reseaching the effectiveness in preventing prostate cancer too. Has anyone else here been aware of this before, or other therapies involving palm products as medicine? I've tried a little google research and the volume of information is amazing... Some people…

Now that some of our palm gardens have been punished by the recent freezes in California, a palm to consider adding to your garden is Serenoa. It's described as being the most plentifull palm in the United States and grows along the SE USA from South Carolina to Louisiana and throughout Florida. If you pull up Serenoa on the web, you will probably get more information about it than you wish to know. Supposedly the fruit has a multitude of medicinal qualities, inculding the shrinking of the prostate to being an aphrodisiac, to curing alcoholism. (Don't hold your breath). The palm comes in many different forms and is quite veariable in apperance. In Southern Georgia …

Hello Palm Lovers, When I first visited Florida in 1985 I asked a local about all the palmlike vegetation that lined the roads around Orlando. I was told that the stuff was saw palmetto, a thorny nuisance that should be ripped out wherever it grew. How times have changed. The City of Fort Myers not only lets saw palmetto live but keeps it trimmed to accentuate the fantastically sculptural trunk detail. Here are some examples:

Serenoa repens 'Georgia Silver', Revisited

Many of you have heard of this mythical palm somewhere in Georgia, but few know the real story or what it actually looks like. A fellow PT'er knew of them, and provided a large quantity of seeds to a nurseryman in GA, who in turn sold them to RPS. RPS gave them the moniker 'Georgia Silver', and seeds were distributed. Here is the description on their website: "This really special and exciting form of this popular American palm comes from a relict population in central Georgia. These palms are wild, occurring on isolated sand dunes where ancient beaches used to be near the "fall line." The Silver Saw Palmetto is a full-sized, glaucous plant that is rarely available…

These are a few recent pictures of some serenoa repens in Steinhatchee Florida. I took these while hunting in a tidal swamp area. I was surprised to see these with some temporary cold damage. I know these can take much colder temperatures. This was the coldest temperatures so far this winter. It was 29F in the morning and the barrel of my rifle had ice on it. Does anybody have any ideas why they had this temporary cold damage?

Serenoa repens. Why it's so slow?
by Alberto- 1 follower

For me Serenoa repens is very slow. I read it needs a kind of Rhyzobium that helps it grow in the poor sandy soil were it is native. Is it because of this specific lack that mine are slow or is this normal for this palm? How cultivated palms grow outside natural habitat? Here is my best performing Serenoa that is now +-five and half years old. They are growing in sandy acid soil.

Serenoa with Funky fans

I have had this Serenoa for several years and although it is growing well and appears healthy it throws out some wacky leaves. This used to be every now and again but now they seem to be appearing more often. Do you think this is genetic, insect damage (never noticed anything on the developing spear, or some deficiency? You can see from the second photo that the new spear is also twisted looking and will open deformed. Another leaf on a offshoot has developed looking like a claw (photo 3). Any advice on this issue would be greatly received. Regards Neil

Seronoa repens (blue form)

This is mostly for Ken Johnson, but I welcome any comments or experiences from all. I was in Hobe Sound, FL the other day and found a wonderful collection of the blue form of saw palmetto. I will be back there in two weeks with a backhoe operator. My intent is to see if I can transplant saw palmetto successfully? Can these be field dug and transplanted easily? Do they take transplanting well? They will need to make a 2 hour drive home, as well. or should I just go buy one? Last summer I had a backhoe operator dig a small field grown cabbage palm. I took it home and had in the ground within 30 minutes of excavation. The center spear came out in the first week,…

Serpentine soil
by Gbarce- 14 replies

If a palm you like is said to grow in serpentine soils (like copernicia cowelii or coccothrinax moaensis) will it be harmful to the plant if you grow it in ordinary run of the mill soil? Will it eventually just die a slow death becuase serpentine soil conditions are so extreme that the plants adapted to it will just not be able to cope? I have been trying to read up on it and basically what I understand is: 1) it has very little nutrients 2) either very alkaline or very acidic 3) has a lot of heavy metals- magnesium, iron etc... 4) does not hold water very well Is there are way to replicate this type of soil-- what combination of media shoud I use in the…

I found in photos of the habitat of Lytocaryum weddellianum two palms which I can not identify though I have some guesses. These photos were taken by M. Britto in 2012 in Serra da Estrela of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. I add to the photo details showing the palms in question the links to the original photos.
