by Loxahatchee Adam- 0 replies

Just posted these on the IPS FB page also. Was driving by and saw these on way to dinner. Had my passenger take a backward pic at a stop light. 2 Thrinax radiata of different size? Or is one Thrinax excelsa? Is there a definitive way of differentiating?

2 very interesting Sabals...
by JayW- 16 replies

Took these today at Bok Tower. This 1st one, I'm not sure on a ID other than it's a very large, young Sabal. You can see the Sabal Palmettos around it, but it's definitely not a Sabal Palmetto. I'm standing there as a reference, I'm 6' 1" tall if that helps. This 2nd one is a Sabal Palmetto that was planted there by President Coolidge in 1929 and is still looking good, except for some Woodpecker damage. It's the 2nd, taller one to the right. Look closely towards the bottom and you can see the plaque.

These 2 Wodyetia bifurcata, Foxtail Palms, are growing in Maitland, FL (just north of Orlando). They have the fattest trunks of any Foxtail Palms I have ever seen, almost Royal Palm thick. They are in the yard of a beautiful restored 1876 Gothic Carpenter style house.

2 years growth of my Foxy Lady

I always enjoy seeing before and after photos so I thought I would share these of my Foxy Lady. This first picture was from February 2010. The Foxy Lady is the middle palm in a 3 gallon pot: And here it is today in May of 2012: This guy was planted in April of 2010 so it's been in the ground for just over 2 years. Feel free to post any of your before and afters of Foxy Ladies. The growth on these are pretty impressive! I wish I had bought a couple more at this size when I got this one. I bought some 1 gallons, but they have been much slower for me for some reason.

2 years growth of Washingtontonia 1 2

Boring palm? Yes I’d agree. This was a seedling 2 summers ago that must have come down from the neighbors tree. I decided I’d let it stay since it wasn’t in the way. Well, 2 years later and she’s trucking along I’d say. Not bad for free. No fertilizer, or much water except for rain and neighbors ground water from grass yard/irrigation just opposite of the fence that soaks the ground on my side. I added a dipper to it today because I’d like to see what it can do with more. Anyways, I am impressed even though it’ll be a telephone pole one day. Fence height is about 8 feet for scale.

Thought I'd post a 2 year growth on my dypsis albofarinosa and brahea super silver. Both planted out in spring of 2012. Super silver seems to enjoy its spot. dypsis albofarinosa seems to still be aclamating to the full inland sun. It's becoming very compact so I don't know if it's a slow death or just hardening up. Anyway, here's the pics.

Hey all, Just a question... I may be selling my house in Albuquerque. As you are aware, I have two 12ft, 20 year old Trachy's in the yard that have seen -5F and haven't defoliated in over 10 years. Truly cold hardy specimens. Some may think I'm CRAZY for leaving them, but I may not have a choice. How much would you pay? Doug

2-headed Sabal palmetto
by Eric in Orlando- 8 replies
I have posted about this specimen before, hre are some updated photos. This Sabal palmetto is growing in the woods here at Leu Gardens. It was a wild sprouted palm probably "planted" by a bird. It sprouted about 12 years ago. After it was several years old and about 4ft. tall, the growth started to twist and look deformed. Eventually it straightened out and a 2nd growing point emerged, it split underground. If you didn't know better it looks like 2 seperate palms growing together. Its doing its best Hyphaene impression.

2-nice young Hawaiian Pritchardias
by Al in Kona- 9 replies

I visited Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden recently and snapped these two pics of 2-different Hawaiian Pritchardias. They are young plants 'looking good' but no name tags on them. Anyone care to go out on a limb and take a stab at guessing what they might be? Ahh come on, share your visual skills. Besides no one will really know if you are right or wrong since they have no tags. #1

20 year old canary island date palm
by BrittanyG- 1 follower

Hi all, we purchased a 20 year old canary island date palm and transplanted a year ago - it certainly has struggled. We just recently had the soil tested and the PH was out and the tree doctor instructed us to remove all soil and start again. The new soil is in and PH is where it should be. My question is, are we too late or can we bring her back? The growing bud inside is producing brown leaves, no green

I picked a few seeds off the ground underneath a Syagrus coronata at Leu Gardens in Orlando, FL sometime in the very early 2000s when my folks lived in Oviedo, FL. A couple of them germinated, and I planted one in my parent's yard and gave one to a friend in Winter Park nearby. I knew it was still alive and doing well, because she is still a friend and we communicate a few times per year, but I had never been back to see it since it was very small. Well...she sent me some pictures and asked if I wanted seeds, ans I said YES! I couldn't believe how large and vigorous this Syagrus coronata was! So I cleaned the seeds that she brought up to me, and sold them on this sit…
