Sabal insensitive to spear lost
by EuroPalm- 7 replies

I grow in my garden a strange sabal. Two times its spear disapeared. The spear did not rot, it stopped to grow, leaving its place to a hole. You can imagine my disapointment. But after a while the spear grew again. A friend of mine told me this behaviour is proprer to Sabal X Texensis or Sabal Mexicana. A professional palm grower of Hyères city (south of France) had informed him about this strange characteristic. Has any body on the board noticed something like this on palms of these species ? I'll try to post a picture of the palm. Phil

Sabal Leaves Turning White-Help

Here is a picture of a sabal minor planted 2006. Everything was fine till this weekend. I don't know what it is: Herbicide residual, bud rot, bugs, drought? I assumed it was probably herbicide residual. Then, today another sabal started turning white. (Husband has camera at work today) The leaves on the other sabal are losing color at the tips and sides, the inner part of the blade is still green. I’ve been growing these up for a few years now, and I was wondering how much longer before I can start to spot the true lisas. I’m thinking that I’ll need to pot them up to one gallons. Thoughts?

I have a few questions after coming across this palm. Is this just a morph or is it it's own species. I am also interested in some of the details about this palm, as well as an idea of where to get one. Sorry if this has been discussed before. Thanks in advance.

Sabal Lisa OG habitat?

For some of you who wondered where I have been, I apologize. I have been in school and moving my nursery (yet again!) to a final resting place in Eastern Lee County. While here, I have ventured into Collier County and happened upon a few Sabal Lisas. Can anyone tell me where the original plants came from in Collier County? I am curious if I am near habitat or these are outlying plants.

After the discovery of Sabal antillensis in 2017 every single specimen was documented in detail on both Bonaire and Curacao Islands. These observations were compared to the studies in 1979 and it was found that the population on Bonaire had significant differences to the one on Curacao thus leading to the finding of a new species. 56622-185755-1-PB.pdf

Sabal Louisiana

Many years ago, I bought a palm from a local nursery and it was mislabeled as "Sabal Blackburniana". I soon realized that it was really Sabal minor. The leaves were not costapalmate. The erect fruit stalks were shorter than the leaves. As the years went by, it gradually kept creeping along. Then three years ago, I observed that instead of the leaves coming from below ground level, it was attaining some height and there might actually be a trunk hidden behind the leaf bases. I kept cutting them off and ended up with a short, clean, but rough-textured trunk. Once when I was in New Orleans, we took a cruise along the Mississippi. I saw similar Sabals with short…

Sabal Louisiana fruits still hanging on in March...

This Sabal louisiana was planted several years ago by my friend Raymond Sharon in Wichita, it is a prolific seed bearer, usually three stalks at a time. While visiting today, I noticed something I haven't noticed before, a clump of ripe fruits hanging. Upon closer inspection, I found two clumps total hanging on this palm. Is it common for palms to bear ripe fruit this late? Here's a picture I took of one of the clumps, this one accidentally turned out pretty cool...I had to crawl under several other palms to access the fruits...:)

I have three of these that I have grown from seed. They are pot bound and desperately need to get planted. I just cant seem to get too excited about planting them out. Are they visually distinct from other trunking sabals? Sabal guatemalensis (mexicana) grows naturally at the beach. From the few images of S.maritima I have seen it seems to have a lighter colored trunk than S.mexicana. Any other positve qualities?
