1931 dated Palm Nut
by BGFreer- 2 replies
Dear all - I have been looking for someone who can assist with the identification of this nut. I purchased a piece of nautical memorabilia at auction and this lot was combined with it. It has a dataplate that says it was found in the Russel Bay of Islands New Zealand in 1931. I contacted the New Zealand Botantical Society and they assured me it was not native to NZ and that I needed to consult a palm expert... So here I am with the question can anyone confirm what it is and why someone would want to mount it and display it for 90 years ?

1st attempt at creating a hybrid

Just wanted to share a few pictures from my first attempt of hybridizing my Butia with Syagrus Romanzoffiana pollen. No other Butia was flowering during the receptive period and was careful to clean the Butia of all male flowers, including washing multiple days/bagging with pillow case. Was surprised to see how quick the seeds put on size and fruited. I’ve already removed the flesh and checked a few seeds to see if they had an embryo inside, which they did!! Hoping these germinate and grow into some beautiful Mules. One thing is was surprised about was how small some of the seed was.

1st Foxy Lady flower is CA???

My largest foxy lady just dropped a leaf and exposed herself to the public. This palm was planted in August 2003 from a 15 gallon and has grown absolutly crazy for me. It now has about 13 feet of clean trunk and overall height of 25 feet. The base or foot is 58 inches in circumference. This palm is one of the fastest growing palms I have ever planted. I hope it produces viable seed, anyone out there know if this can happen? Here are some shots from today:

by paulgila- 35 replies

my gf jes asked me to plant some palms around her pool. her dad just installed the white plastic fence around it to replace the wooden one that had been there since the 60s & was falling down. he also is building a cool little pool bar & new enclosure around pool filter which you see here. inside the bar. soon he will install a sink & small refrigerator.the irrig.timer is also in there. he does very detailed work. makes it hard to do the painting(which jes & i had to do! ) bar counter with cool tile is almost finished. the pool needs an up-date. here is the south-east planting area.there was a spa there that was so disgusting…

Howdy Yall, I have been wanting one of these for a while and to my surprise they had 2 of them at HD today. I'm so glad Morningstar Nursery is getting these on the market. I want 2 more to add a trio in the back yard. I think I will wait till after hurricane Ike passes before I plant it though. How many years before its gets a trunk? PG These are the ones 5 minutes from my house at Cape Harbor that put them on my short list.

I am thinking to plant two of my favorite Dypsis , Decipiens ( small seedling) and Carlsmitii ( in 45 L bag) and as I cant think any other option I got this unusual idea to plant them beside pool where at the moment is paved ( removed few breaks as square shape)... the paving has 1.35m - 1.5 m wide and I am not sure what is beneath them, I hope not big rock...But assume there wont be rock and I can actually dig it enough...and it is beside ( 2m away) from the new granny flat wall ( see pics) ... so what do you think? They will be under full sun perhaps all day also I hope they are cold hardy enough to see some 0 or -1 only 2-3 hours few morning of winters.…

2 1/2 Years in Garden update 1 2

We moved to a larger property (0.6 acre) about 2 1/2 years ago. Little did I know how much work it would be to landscape over 1/2 acre of sloped property. It's still a bit rough, but we just finished a huge amount of cement patio and wall work (64 cubic yards total). I've also done about 1800 blocks worth of retaining walls myself (Verdura blocks, 65 pounds each), hauled up 40 yards of soil, at least 100 yards of compost, and probably 20 yards of manure. I think our property has gained somehwere in the range of 400,000 pounds of material. It's finally starting to take shape, and I have the grade everywhere as I want, so I can start some serious planting! Here are …

While PalmGuyWC was in town from Walnut Creek, CA, I jammed packed an entire weekend of palm sight seeing. This included many exceptional private palm gardens including that of Mike Harris (Waykoolplantz) and another palm enthusiast, Paul Humann. Enjoy this photographic journey....and remember that pictures do not do this garden ANY justice whatsoever.

2 big-growing palms planted in decorative containers
by Al in Kona- 2 replies

You say you don't have room in your garden for a Bismarckia or a Dypsis decaryi. Then plant them in containers as these 2-pics show, growing in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii. Interesting for such big-growing palms to be planted this way and looking good too. I wonder how a Jubaea or Corypha would behave planted like that!!!

by Eric in Orlando- 6 replies
We have 2 specimens of Wallichia disticha flowering. The first one started a couple years ago and has produced a few inflorescences but no seed. Two more are emerging now. It was planted in fall 1995, and was about 3ft. The second was planted in summer 2000. It has just started flowering, one inflorescence has emerged but isn't visible in the photo, its on the backside of the palm. There are 2 getting ready to grow out up top. Thise is a short lived palm. #1 #2

Hi I m in a 7b zone (Southeast USA). I have lots of the usual zone 6-8a palm tree suspects. i added new ones last year including a fully grown Sabal palmetto. I have used Jobe’s palm tree spikes for 15 years and they have kept them real green and healthy. How many spikes shall i give the Sabal to start? 3 times a year? I have large needle palms (R. hystrix) that are against a fence. They have become a pain in the b..t to crawl inside and plant the spikes. How do you fertilize the large bushy ones? Thanks Pat

2 for One on a Rainy Day
by freakypalmguy- 4 replies

I was bored with all the rain today so I decided to pot up som Butia eriospatha that had recently germinated. When I dug them out, I found that two of them were coming out of the same seed. I found this twice. Is this something that comonly occurs with palm seeds? Or just certain species? Can they be separated later when the seed has expended all it's energy?
