Once again a bit of gardening maintenance I can certainly see the difference a bit of rainfall makes in the garden with it being so dry the last 7 months certainty has helped having 2 months good rainfall if the wet conditions continue it will be a wet winter keeping the sandy soil moisture in the ground along with the low temperatures helping the garden to relax and put on the previous summer growing conditions of the heat and humidity into growth changing the garden completely again with the new growth the good thing about getting older is our palms look better with age

Kentia Palm
by amazonman- 9 replies
I acquired an 16’ kentia palm with around a 10 foot trunk. The palm was removed from a front yard and was placed in a 36” box and transported to my driveway. It’s probably been in the box for about a month since removed. It’s going through some stress with the frond leaves browning, thinning and yellowing. My question is how long can I leave in the box before transplanting it. It’s going in the backyard that I am remodeling and won’t be done till another 5-6 months. I am in SoCal in Corona California.

See attached photo -- I'm impressed by the pattern, but fearful for my palms! Landscaper says it's a beetle but couldn't be more specific. Any ideas as to what it is and, more importantly, how to get rid of it???

Ok Im new to palms and a bit intimidated by them but love the look. we are redoing our backyard and just put in a pool. I love the tropical landscape look, and it seems like some type of palms would be a great addition to a tropical landscape look. some people have scared me away from Queen palms because the get so tall, maintenance to keep them looking nice, etc. bit if I didn’t do Queen palms, what are some other smaller options? I was looking at Pygmy dwarf date palms but someone mentioned how they have really sharp needles on them? I have 2 small kids, and wondering if it would be dangerous to have those? love sago palms. …

Dypsis rosea
by realarch- 10 replies

Finally got around to giving this trio of Dypsis rosea some TLC. After trimming off some old leaf sheaths and fronds, they are looking rather epic. On island, we always referred to this palm as ‘Hawaiian Punch’, for obvious reasons. The smaller of the three needed more trimming and doesn’t have much color. These are not small palms. The white 5 gal. bucket for some scale in the one photo is between the two trunks. Tim

I bought this palm from a nursery this week and planted it a couple of days ago. It looked like this when I got it. I asked the lady what was wrong with it. and she said she didn’t know. What is this and is it recoverable? It was only $100 so I thought I would try one. There are no bugs and no mold spots. It’s my first palm. What is your advice?

I(D help - Pinanga perhaps
by John Eve- 5 replies
Here I go again, with another palm that I now have shooting from seed, but don't know what it is. This is a small clumping pinnate that grows to about 4 - 5 metres. Leaves and trunks looks almost exactly like Pinanga sylvestris, though the seeds are completely different. Sylvestris seeds are oblong, these are smaller and round, and come on a single stem. Again, there were taken in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Thanks for any help .... John E, Hua Hin, Thailand.

Sabal Palm Help - Arizona
by Thorty212- 2 followers

Hi All, new member here. I’ve had this Sabal in the ground for two years now. After it was originally planted, it suffered a good deal of transplant shock but it eventually settled down and had some new growth pop up. I know they are painfully slow growers, so when it went through another summer with minimal growth, I didn’t think too much of it. However, the new frond that opened seemed to be very stunted. It opened pretty much at the base of the trunk. Then, over our “winter” I noticed the other new growth that wasn’t fully opened yet was starting to dry out and turn brown. When I inspected it, I was able to pull it right out without any effort. I noticed a faint smell …

Nanotek 2000
by britgardener- 0 replies

I'm hoping to get some feedback from anyone who's used a product from Nanotek to treat Red Palm weevils or coconut rhinoceros beetle. I'm natural skeptical about claims from manufacturers, but someone reached out to me stating this product was amazing. Not much online, but if you've use this or any other Nanotech pesticides and had positive results let me know. It does sound too good to be true, but also bordering on a scam. Let me know

Tortoise and the Hare

After doing some spring cleaning I noticed how much faster one of my livistona decora was growing than the other. Transplanted them at the same time and one is SLOW but pushing new spears and one grows faster than the weeds! Both get equal attention and same exposure. So interesting how variable they are with one growing maybe a foot and the other having grown probably 3+ feet. First picture is from today. Second is from when they were planted last April 2022. Third is at the nursery.

I just planted this attalea cohune today it's my first palm with a heel. When I planted it the root ball fell apart I saw the root system was dark and the roots looked unhealthy. Alot of them were black and squishy and broke with ease. Part of the heel is dead too is this normal will the palm replace those roots easily what can be done to help it along the growth seems slow for the few weeks I had it in a pot it any and now I know why the roots were in terrible condition. The heel is still above ground I knew to keep it like that here are some pics of the heel and palm.
