Palms in Las Vegas?
by Gbarce- 8 replies
I'll be going to the US at the end of October till mid November. I'll be going to Baltimore and New York (but I don't expect to see palms there) and will spend around 6 days in Las Vegas. Is there a Botanical Garden or Specialty Nursery in Vegas where I can see a lot of Palms and Cycads? I wouldn't mind taking home a plant or 2-- hehe

Sable Minor var. louisiana
by blotto- 5 replies

Hey everyone, I recently moved to the Northern Virginia area from a much colder climate (Mid-West). I was excited to see that this area is listed as climate zone 7a. There are no palms growing in this area but I believe that some might be able to, especially if given protection during freezes. I'm looking at experimenting with growing some colder tolerent palms and I was wondering if anyone has had luck growing palms in this climate zone. And what palms do you have that have survived...pictures?? I was going to try growing the Louisiana verison of the Sable Minor. I've been reading on the net that this palm is pretty hardy. Anyone growing these?? How hardy are they and…

digging a palm
by palmazon- 34 replies

I went to gtlevine's to drop off a pair of Dypsis leptocheilos and dig a Parajubaea Cocoides; the following is an outline of Gary's surefire/cross-your- heart/foolproof digging method. Trench around about one spade width from the trunk - 9" or so. Upon reaching a foot and a half in depth, cut all the split shovel-struck root ends neatly with a pair of snips - the theory being opportunistic fungi won't gain easy access. Wrap the exposed area in cling wrap as snugly as possible. This helps keep the ball intact while you rock it to one side and undercut it. We added a layer of duct tape - not shown (the photographer was busy wrapping). Also ommitted were the rocking…

Palms and Lawn Weed Control
by ruskinPalms- 18 replies
- 1.3k views
The weeds are winning. I fear I am going to have to resort to chemical warfare in this particular battle. Any suggestions for weed control in St. Augustine lawns that won't harm my palms or at least will keep the harm to a minimum? Most of the stuff at the box stores has Atrazine in it. What will this do to my palms? Does it actually control weeds in the lawn? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance for any and all replies!

I just purchased two 15 gallon Kentiopsis magnifica from JDA's. Of course I bought before I did research. I searched Google and there really is not a lot of info on this plant. Anyone in SoCal have it growing in the ground? How did it do this Winter?

Kris' Borassus flabellifer Challenge 1 2
by Alicehunter2000- 67 replies
- 6.2k views
Kris was kind enough to send me 6 Borassus flabellifer seeds to see if they would survive here in zone 9a. Seems there is little information as to the cold hardiness of this species. It doesn't appear that this species is widely planted and I'm not sure why? Thanks Kris......I accept the challenge! The pictures are of the seeds that were sent. The smaller is of a 3 seeded more common variety for India. The larger is of a less common "Big Mama" variety. According to Kris, Big Mama seeds may prove to be a more robust plant. The seed with the radicle is of a Borassus Hybrid that I am currently growing. It is at a 1 strap leaf stage and is currently in full sun in a huge …

EZ-Flo Fertilizer Injector
by doubravsky- 27 replies

I found some reference to this product- looks like what I've been looking for as something that will inject the fertilizer directly into the drip line system. I recently switched from sprinklers to a drip line using 2 gph emitters and have been looking for something to limit the fertilizer to the area that is being watered. Anyone with experience?
