[edit] OKAY ALL, I'M DOING THE ULTIMATE BEFORE AND AFTER. This is the text for today, Oct. 10, 2013, about six years after the original shots. Howdyall: Surge's rooftop shots along with Kris and Bo inspired me to do the same. Umph! Onto the roof . . . Here's a Roystonea regia. It took a hard hit in the freeze this winter. Here's the same one, today.

Syagrus botryophora 1 2

Howdyall: My hands shake as I type this. Home Depot happened to have a nice S. botryophora in a 10 gallon for 199 bones. Most of the ones I'd seen before were pencil-necks, but this one is was so beautiful that I fell into a swoon right in the middle of the nursery and bought it and schlepped it home in Sophia Loren. Here's a full-length shot. It's about 8 feet tall overall. The Shoe is an American size 12 . . . . Feel another swoon coming on . . . .

Clinostigma harlandii
by Hollywood Palms- 29 replies

Hi All, I bought a Clinostigma harlandii from Phil at Jungle Music and spent all spring and summer acclimating the poor devil. It was getting sad, so I planted it in the ground, in full sun, where it appears to be much happier. It was in a 5 gallon container and is about 18-20 inches tall. Any idea how fast this bad boy will grow? Thanks, David

Remove leaf or no, a dilemna
by Walter John- 16 replies
I have a dilemna as the post topic suggests. I have a wonderful Cocothrinax barbadensis aka "alta" growing nicely, but unfortunately there's a large Pritchardia hillebrandii leaf covering the palm entirely, please see photos herein. My question is , should I cut off the big bully Pritchardia leaf so I can allow the cocothrinax to grow even better plus I'll be able to look at it ? Or let things stay as is. I want to see the palm and am quite prepared to sever this leaf. What does everyone think I should do ? Here's the intruder a close up of the evil hawaiian, Pritchardia coverting the slower growing Puerto Rican Cocothrinax, you can hardly see the palm ! …

Transplanting Trachycarpus
by Adam from Oz- 7 replies

Yes, A problem I thought I would never face. My neighbour has an untrunked (and therefore not completely hideous) Tackycr8parse . He is having house extensions and wants to save the palm for reasons unknown to me. My suggestions that it would transplant quite nicely into the shredder did not go down too well. I know nothing about this palm except it should be extinct due to aesthetic reasons. My neighbour wants it saved (I have seen his psychiatrist bills!) Any advice? Detonate it out of the soil with dynamite and hope it lands in a suitable position? Yank and chuck? Dig and bury upside down? As you can see, I am remaining completely objective. Cheers,…

rooftop, crown shots
by surgeon83- 11 replies

I had the opportunity to stand level with the crown of my approximately 15' tall foxtail, so I took a picture. The picture was taken looking down on me, so it makes me look shorter and wider than I really am, but oh well. Without me: Rooftop backyard shot: Any other unique rooftop shots? I think there was an earlier post on this topic, but here we go again.

What is this Bird of Prey Parade? Here is a red-shouldered Hawk looking for food in my yard. He was not actually in my fishtails but was close enough. I was not sure he was eating brown anoles till I threw one near him (onto the roof) and he gobbled it up. Alan This is after a week or so ago an owl made a go at bird supermodel of the week.

Palm Books
by Neofolis- 13 replies

I was wondering which of the palm books is best in terms of detailed, accurate descriptions of the most species. I'm not too bothered about pictures/illustrations, just information. I'm also thinking in terms of the types of species covered. Obviously with the more common species, most information is widely available on the internet, but there are numerous species about which information seems very limited.

Hi Guys & Girls Heres a couple of pictures (Pic 1) is to remind you about the palm I’m referring to. (pic 2) is something very different within both palms ’X’ with, This is one of the Hybrids, Very different to the Triangle “X” but one Good thing None of the latter have ever set viable seed (Not over here in Aussie yet ) Even I was stunned when earlier this year (Pic 3) is the only picture I Have My Beauty starting to set some seed after three attempts. Prior , and of that 4th set only a third of the seed was to size. And at that time I was harvesting the …

Did TERMITES kill my Joey Magnifica?
by metalfan- 3 replies
I had a Joey Magnifica that I got for $5 as a sprouted seed from Jeff Marcus. It was doing well, it came as just the big seed with a root, and I grew it to 3 leaves. Suddenly, it started to go downhill. I mean, REAL SUDDENLY. At first I thought it was mites, so I treated it with Kelthane followed by soap spray. It continued to deteriorate til finally it died. As I was taking it out of the pot, I pulled out the seed, and it cracked open, and white shiny crawling bugs that looked like TERMITES fell out. Then I saw that the soil was infested with them too, and when I pulled the stem of the plant, they were eating the base that had been under the soil. I have s…

Here are a few plants I scored from Gary Woods sale last weekend. His sale is going thru this saturday November 3. First is a couple Trachycarpus wagnerianus A twofer. Parajubea torallyi with a Bahea brandeegii that I am going to plant just like that. Growth rate variations and runts
by Matt in SD- 7 replies
Now that I've been growing more palms from seeds and/or small seedlings I've noticed that there are definitely some plants that just start out growing and others that sit there and seem to take forever to get established and really start growing. This is obviously not unique to me as there are plants at nurseries where I know seed was only available one time and they may have plants ranging in size from dinky 1g sized plants to well rooted 15g plants...all from the same seed batch after maybe 4 or 5 years. I realize this might be a sensitive subject for the professional nurserymen out there but I'm really curious. Do those plants that are still dawdling about tryin…

About a 2 months ago I was ready to move once again back to Escondido California, but wife and I decided to live here in Vegas, so we applied for a loan and looks like we are going to be first time home owners!!! We are so happy to start a new life, that includes our addiction to Palms!!! my wife got hooked with (our ) hobbie. I went to look some info on desert palms on Phil's web site, i didn't realized so many they can live out here in the desert climate, now the challenge is to get them!! But funds are short right now , and the nurseries here don't have much selection, is any one coming from California or what ever state to Las vegas that wants to bring a palm…
