Acelloraphe -- Cany U Dig It??

Howdyall: One of a number of errors I made in palming at my place is misplacing (putting in a not-cool spot) an A. wrightii, that's lovely, but not enough room. So, I'm gonna dig it up and move it. I'd like to do it now . . . . Anyone have any thoughts on how they take being dug up and moved. This one is about 6' (2 m) tall, and about as wide, with multiple trunks. Thanks! dave

Rebirth of a planter 1 2
by MattyB- 47 replies

I'm working on the upper section. For those of you who came to my party it's the planter that's near the entrance of the front door. I want this to be a sweet formal style planting. First, I dug out the top layer of hard packed, rock solid, heavy fill soil and began ammending w/ sand and compost. I use the .88 cent bags of Steer Manure from Home Depot because it's cheap. I do not plant directly into fresh steer manure as not to burn the plants roots. I'm really liking to use a lot of sand too. The planter won't sink as much and as long as you mulch it'll stay moist and the nutrients will work their way down.

I was checking out the new Kindle, "Amazon's Revolutionary Wireless Reading Device" when I noticed they also sell plants. So I took a look to see what I could find under the heading "Indoor Trees". Bismarckia Nobilis I don't think I'll buy either one.

I was not going to post pics of this palm again until next year but after a recent and very rare rain a leaf base fell off revealing the first 2 rings of trunk! This is one of the whitest trunks I've seen and the white coating is thick! There has been much debate as to what this palm is and for now I think I'm just going to call it "Sp. Great White". Anyhows I hope you enjoy the pics. The first one is the earliest pic I could find of it and the rest are new. Steve

My little C. Nucifera
by Coloradoboi- 4 replies

I may live in Colorado, but that doesn't mean that I can't grow coconuts! I found this little guy at lowes 2 years ago growing in a 3 gallon pot. It was labled as a majesty  It grows inside my greenhouse for the winter, and I keep it outside on the patio for the summer. It's grown very quickly and seems to be happy. Here is a picture taken in early september before I moved it inside. Anyhow, It has started to grow quite large, and I fear that it may not fit in my greenhouse by the end of next summer. Maybe I should send it to a fellow palm lover free of charge. Any takers??

USA SE Coast Bismark 1 2
by Central Floridave- 78 replies

I have a 3 year old seedling Bismark Palm growing at my parent-n-law place on Amelia Island. for those who may not know, Amelia borders Georgia on the Atlantic Ocean coast and is North of Jacksonville. This will be the 2nd winter for it since it was germinated much further South at my place. There is a lemon tree across the street that has been there for the past ten years and produces a lot of fruit. Thus, this gives me hope that maybe a Bismarck can do it. The spot is about 50 yards from the beach and under scrub oak canopy. I'm curious, is there a Bismark palm planted any further North than this one?

Pritchardia hillebrandii
by Palm Guy- 7 replies

Hi all, I purchased some pritchardia hillebrandii seeds less than a year ago and I'm finding that these palms grow quick...maybe too quick! I have three seedlings all of which are on their 7 th leaf after about 10 months from seed. Do any of you find this palm invasive in your area? Maybe some of the Hawaii people can help me out. I'm kinda wary about planting this one in my yard as if it becomes rampant it will surely succeed the native sabal bermudana which is REALLY slow growing and endangered. I'd appreciate your thoughts. Thanks, Mike F

Foxtail vs Foxy Lady
by oliver- 14 replies

I bought a couple of Wodyetia x veitchia from Ortanique a couple of years ago and also, around the same time, germinated some regular Foxtail seeds. At this point, they are all about 3 feet tall in 3 g containers. I really can't see much of a difference. Is it possible to distinguish at this size? Are they all just plain Foxtails? Can you really be sure when buying the seeds, that it is actually a hybrid, since both seeds looked very similar from what I remember.

CIDP Seeds
by John Case- 7 replies

All, I have access to a large number of easily accessible CIDP seeds, still on the tree all big and orange. I do not see another CIDP in the near vicinity, that, however, does not mean there isn't one around the neighborhood. Outside of planting them, is there a key to knowing if they are viable or just female eggs? Thanks,

Cold Hardy Palm Garden 1 2

In the early 60's I lived in Miami just a few blocks from Fairchild Tropical Gardens, and that's where I learned a lot about palms and became addicted to them. In the fall of 1966 I moved to San Francisco and lived there for about a year, and darn near froze my bunns off and I couldn't wait to get back to Fla. It was quite a drastic change. I moved back to Miami for a year, but California had spoiled me with it's diverse topography, attitudes, and beauty. I had never noticed the heat, humidity, and insects, and the flatness of Florida before, and I found it difficult to readjust, so after a year back in Miami, I moved back to San Francisco. With my second move back to…
