Satranala decussilvae
by Eric in Orlando- 29 replies

Is anyone growing Satranala decussilvae, the Forest Bismarckia from Madagascar? I got some seeds awhile back from RPS and 4 have germinated and put up their first leaf. I potted them up today in deep pots. Several other seeds were begining to set out a sinker root. I am curious if they can take full sun as a juvenile. Also, any info on cold hardiness?

Plant/pot shelf source (from Lowes)
by ThunderSRQ- 4 replies

I was wondering if there are any other good options for outdoor (plastic) plant shelves -- I have been looking around and, so far, the only type I've found are made by US Fence (it's their "Powershelf" merchandising system -- I saw them in use at the Lowes garden center and contacted the manufacturer but there's no distributor anywhere near me). Although the type I found do look very good (very sturdy black plastic grid and lots of sizes/configurations), I would have to order them directly from Ohio and the shipping cost adds about 30% to the cost for what I want. Anyone else have a better/closer/retail source for good, quality plant/pot shelves? (and, if anyone wan…

For all those who love palms and many other tropical plants and live in Florida and the Caribbean, the red palm mite should have you very worried. If there is not a remedy found, this insect is going to cause widespread damage and foreever alter the landscape here. There was an article in the Palm Beach post on this pest. Large ohi'a tree vs. palms
by bgl- 37 replies
- 1.4k views
Typically, the tradewinds here (95% of the time) are very pleasant and gentle, and windy conditions are extremely unusual. About once a year we have very strong gusty winds for several days. Last time was in late January 2007, and two large Ohi'a (Metrosideros polymorpha) trees fell down. One of them landed right smack on top of a Dypsis sp. bejofa and I posted photos at that time of the damage. To my surprise, the Dypsis survived and is doing just fine now. For the last several days, the entire state of Hawaii has experienced strong gusty winds with plenty of rain, more so in certain areas. When I walked around our garden this morning I couldn't believe my eyes: a very …

Pinanga dicksonii seedlings
by Tyrone- 14 replies
- 1.2k views
I just potted up these little Pinanga dicksonii seedlings the other day and thought how gorgeous they looked so I had to take some pics and show everyone. I grew these from seed and they've grown quite fast. These are just under 10 months old grown in my humidi crib fish tank thingy. P dicksonii comes from India and is meant to be quite cool tolerant for a Pinanga. I'll find out if they really are. They seem much faster than coronata. I just love all that cool Pinanga mottling.

Germination Question
by gavilan1- 3 replies
I followed suggestions provided by several members posted on this board, such as soaking seeds for 15 or so minutes in mild bleach solution, then for 3 days in plain water, changing water every day, then into the moist peat moss (hand wrung after soaking), with a light spraying of Daconil onto the peat. Close the lid on the Glad container, then sit it on the germination mat at 75 degrees F forever. The only thing that I didn't do, as I wasn't sure that it mattered, was to cover the Glad containers to keep them in the dark. In any case, I set out 10 H. indica, 10 D. orange crush, 10 L. grandis, 10 D. lanceolata, and NADA. I've read that others have already sprouted the…

Triming Canary Island Date Palms
by Ashton- 12 replies
- 2.8k views
A friend has a 25-30 ft. CIDP in his front yard. For many years the tree retained short leaf bases. Recently about ten feet of trunk started losing the leaf bases and now clean trunk is showing. I suggested that he remove the remaining leaf bases to give it a cleaner look. He is willing to buy a new set of tools so that whoever trims the tree will not infect it with Fusarium. Do the trimmers use chain saws for such a job, or is there a special tool that does an even better job? Also, does anyone know of a reputable tree service company in the southbay area of Los Angeles? Thanks for all thoughts. Ashton

cow manure
by Bennz- 10 replies

I'm in the process of converting my entire farm system to certified organic, and playing around with various possibilities for growing media. My original idea was to chip forestry prunings and compost them with cow manure, and use this as the basic potting mix. Then I got to thinking that cow manure is about the best natural compost there is, and I went out chopped up a few patties with a spade, and potted 4 or 5 Archontophoenix cunninghamiana and Rhopalostylis cheesemanii in it. To my surprise at around 2 weeks these palms are not dead (my expectation). They even look like they have grown a little. This is interesting. Both these palms are 'rainforesty' types, bo…

When to plant a palm?
by _Keith- 6 replies
OK, here the common advice is to plant a palm in the May/June timeframe when our soils first become warm. But in another post recently I saw someone state that a palm in the pot was probably 10 degrees less hardy than one in the ground. So, I have quite a few palms in pots destined to go in the ground. I don't have a greenhouse right now (thanks for that one, Hurricane Rita), so they are unprotected and in the same climate whether in the ground or in the pot, so why not plant them now. The soil will be warmer in the ground than in the pot, and surely some root development will occur earlier than otherwise. I don't want to kill the palms, but at the same time this is…

Rain Barrels

Do you collect rain water so you don't have to water your palms with tap water? How bad is tap water for palms? Are some more sensitive than others? The latest storm we had here in California gave me well over a hundred gallons. The only problem with rain water is that its so darn cold. So I keep several gallons inside my heated greenhouse.

Ceroxylon interruptum

Here in NZ many people (including myself) have Ceroxylon interruptum growing. If you look it up, it is not an accepted name on Kews list. In the world checklist on Palms it lists Ceroxylon interruptum as now being Klopstockia interrupta. But Klopstockia are now all Ceroxylon, so when you look up Klopstockia interrupta, it say it is now "?" Has there been any advance on this species, does anyone know what it is now called?

Easy come, easy go at Lowes 1 2 3

Well, I made a bunch of little stops on my way home looking for those smooth black rocks to put in the top of my Eckmanii pot tonite and I ended up at the Oceanside Lowes. I decided to pick up some more of their new "Kellogg's" Palm and Cactus mix which looks pretty good, nice and light as it were. (any reports here from someone else?) I also got a bag of "the rocks" that I'll have to wash and hand pick. Anyhoo, as I walked in the garden area I went by a bunch of tall palms on a large cart near the front that I ignored, mainly cause they are usually plain Kentia's etc. I proceeded to the back, got my stuff and came back and was standing in line and I looked at the…
