Bugs
by Surf Guy- 6 replies

I was checking out my palms in the back when I got home from work and noticed these black spots on my Pritchardia. They look like some type of bugs. The plant is in the ground and ants seem to like this stuff. They arte on the new spear and go down oinside the plant. I would take pictures but I don't have the equipment to take a closeup of something this small. Is this harmful? Should I be worried and take immediate action? If so, what do I use to kill it? I then noticed it on some of my other palms as well. What should I do? Mike

Getting ready for winter (1 of 3)
by htownpalmer- 12 replies

I live in Houston. For 42 weeks a year, it's a great place to grow palms. It's just those other 10 weeks when it gets dicey. In preparation for the upcoming cold nights in January & February, I prepared a shelter for some of the palms not acclimated to Houston's winters, including: * dypsis decaryi * archontophoenix cunninghama * ptychosperma elegans * Arenga pinnata and * Ravenala madagascariensis Basically, I had a frost cloth sewn onto a tarp and hung the thing from the side of my house, connecting it to my fence. This side is south facing, so it should offer as much protection as I can get from the colder winds coming from the north. I'm alread…

Just felt like snapping a few pics this morning. Hope you enjoy. Dypsis sp. 'Orange Crush'. It had filled out a 2 gallon nicely so I potted it up into a 5 gallon last night. Maybe it'll be ready to plant by spring. I like the twising action.

My last batch didn't do anything, I planted this summer and they are still sitting there. hmm? I have a new batch and they are starting to get fungus, would spray with daconil help this? -fungicide. I have them at about 85F degrees right now. How long do these usually take? I know they are slow palms growth wise, but what about germination? any help is appreciated! thanks! Luke

Too much sun or too much water?
by Gbarce- 6 replies

I germinated some of our home grown Licuala Grandis seeds and I noticed that the leaf tips of my seedlings are suddely turning brown. Whats happening here and what should I do. The potting medium is compost and a lot of Charcoaled rice husk so its a very freely draining medium.

I saw this link on Cloud Forest discussion forum and was blown away by the quality of these photographs showing the wonderful wild specimens and habitat. Someone also pointed out that the palm in photo number 7 is different from the rest with deeper splits. Be sure to check all four pages as there are some more photos, and if one does not know French, there is a website babelfish.altavista.com that can do a rough translation. With a little guess work, one can understand most of what was posted (e.g. rusticity probably means hardiness) http://fousdepalmiers.fr/html/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1709

Pot Planting Method
by Morabeza- 7 replies
Hello everyone, I joined the Southern CA chapter of the IPS in 1997 (ish?) and at the time there were articles in the journal and talk at meetings extolling the advantages of planting palm species that either have sensitive roots or are marginal with regards to cold hardiness to be planted, pot and all, directly into the ground. It seemed that many members had success at the time, but my participation in the group ended after successive moves to Portugal in 1998 and then Cape Verde Islands in 1999. I was back in CA for a while but never got a sense of how these palms that many were planting using the "pot-planting" method ended up faring in the long run. D…

Just sort of throwing this out as an opinion topic. The Old world Palms,,especially from the Pacific Rim, and Madagascar are impressive, especially for the colors they display on their emergent leaves, and crownshafts, but lest we not forget, some of t he New World Palms are mighty fine in themselves like the Euterpes.Asterogynes,Aiphanes,Attaleas,Copernicias, thrinaxes, and many more .Feel free to add on.

How do I get Allogoptera arenaria to do this?
by kylecawazafla- 23 replies

I saw these in the garden at University of South Florida with Regina (Metalfan) a few months ago. I never really liked Allogoptera arenaria, but when I saw these I became an instant fan. Do they usually grow so much clear trunk? Are these even A. arenaria? This one even had a double trunk!

From the Rooftop

My roof is too steep for me to climb on, but I did shoot this through the dormer window. Quality not to good due to time of day and shooting through a window screen. These twin beds are under construction, but this is where some of those palms are going. The circle in the center will be a fountain, which you can see in the upper left of the photo. Gonna be a bear to move it. I dug the hole for the 900 gallon catch basin myself with a shovel and a wheelbarrow. This time I am bringing in equipment. The left side is where the two 50 foot pine trees stood until last week. Between that and the frost, well, things aren't as lush as normal. The structure is an old 2 sta…

Gonna hang in some small Floridy towns, I hear there's a lot, but they don't get press. Especially on the West Coast of the South near Fort Myers. The kind of places where time stands still. Sorta. No shirt, no shoes, or . . . . Anyone have any specific suggestions? Thanks. dave

Howdy: Got this vid off You-Tube of a nice house in Ft. Myers. Yowza! My house would sell for about that much, and rest assured, it's nowhere near this nice. Plus, Satchmo singing "Wonderful World." AND! Palms, but it could use a lot more. A LOT MORE. Ahem . . . . click here for video

Astrocaryum alatum
by Gileno Machado- 1 reply

I've just potted up this young A. alatum, grown from seed sowed in 2005. This little palm is probably ready for the ground now but I'll give it another year in a bigger container before I decide where to place it in the backyard. I've had it baking in 3/4 full sun for the last few months and the roots have quicky taken over the previous small pot. I was still afraid to fert it in the pot so I've just replaced the medium with rich new soil mix, with added organics and manure. Very elegant looking and fast growing palm, in my opinion, in spite of the obvious, visible, long and thick spines. The young leaves are very nice... Anyone else likes/grows this species, or has pi…

To many palms, to few consumers

I noticed Briancoconut's post about $50 for 18ft royals. I see many many give aways these days if you look in the right places. I gather to many people where growing for the new homes that are no longer being built causing a palm glut. A couple of years ago that same palm would easily get $350. How do growers make any money selling a 18ft royal for $50. ???

Howdyall: First, thanks to all of our Florida and other members who offered hospitality in my previous post. Finally, after deliberation, procrastination, etc., I've made concrete plans. I'm taking Deltoid Arilines ("Ready when you are") from Lost Angels, to Tampa on Dec. 13, this Thursday, leaving Tampered on January 4, 2008 early in the morning. Non-stop, $444, more or less. The bus! Can you spell PIA? FOUR transfers, over three days, $300++ and no freedom, like taking the plane, though I do get to leave on my new pair of red shoes. Travel AMTRACK. Take the train and don't come back! (Parody of an ancient ad.) Oh yeah? From LA to Ch…

I've been growing guihaia argyrata (vietnamese needle palms) and Rhapdiophyllum hystrix (US version) for about 10 years here in Dallas next to each other. Here is a comparison image of the two leaf undersides. The G. argyrata underside has a coppery tumescence on the underside while R. hystrix is a hairless green.

Bamboo Shade House 1 2
by Jeff in St Pete- 51 replies

After I received my first big order of palm seeds back in June (1700 seeds), I started wondering "what am I going to do with these when they germinate?" I talked to the local guy who oversees the workers about a possible shade house and he showed me this site. He said it was high and dry and that it would not get muddy or flooded during the rainy season which lasts a good 7 months here. It's a tricky spot, since the ground slopes down all around this area and it can be very steep.

I was driving down the freeway today near my house and noticed you could see snow on the mountains about 60 miles away. I decided to go home to snap some pics. Part of it was to prove to my parents that you can see the ocean from my house, why not throw in the mountains too!
